We round out Listener Submitted Month with another part 2, this one featuring a lot more elder abuse (it’s ok, the great-great-grandpa is kind of an immortal corpse) and a lot less butt stuff. HOUSE ll: THE SECOND STORY (1987) decides to not pick up where the first movie left off and instead focus on yuppies living in the gaudiest Aztec-themed house you may ever see. There’s a crystal skull that can be used for time travel, a six-shooter-wielding skeleton named Slim, and the star of the film, a caterpillar-dog. Listener Submitted Month continues with a film about an evil genie obsessed with granting nefarious wishes to his victims' butts. Seriously! WISHMASTER 2 (1999) has two different rectum-centric deaths, which may not seem like a lot on paper, but really add up in a 90-minute gorefest. A group of inept thieves accidentally release the titular djinn, who goes back to his old song and dance of offering wishes that people take without considering that they may end up pooping casino tokens. This one just turned 10, so we’re celebrating with a rewatch and a fresh perspective on Astron-6 movies. Is it an entirely new concept? Of course not, but it packs a body horror punch and has incredible low-budget practical effects so we all walked away happy. At this point, we’re basically “giant animals attack” movie connoisseurs so why not add to the pile with a turn-of-the-century horror comedy take on the genre? LAKE PLACID (1999) has a stacked cast and the legendary Stan Winston Studios doing sfx, but they seemingly forgot one key ingredient to make it all work - actual funny jokes. It seems wild that confiscated items at a police station are underutilized trope in horror - think about all the weird stuff in evidence rooms, messing with it would lead to creepy stuff happening for sure. At least we have a gem of an indie horror like LAST SHIFT (2014) to show us what kind of trouble those cursed items could cause. You can’t help but feel bad for a rookie cop spending her first day (well, night, but you get the idea) on the job and being tormented by the ghosts of a murder cult.
