With no LeBron James, the Lakers were already set to paddle upstream against a resurgent Golden State Warriors that's looking to pass them in the standings. Combine that with an absolutely unconscious Steph Curry to open the game, early foul trouble for Anthony Davis, and a collectively cold shooting night from the supporting cast, and paddling upstream became the equivalent of trying to paddle across the entire Pacific Ocean using a golf club. A strong opening quarter and change from the Lakers was no match for the Warriors' ball movement, body movement, and strong work on the offensive glass. AD still managed to string together a strong night of 27 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks, but received way too little help on either side of the ball and Darvin Ham waved the white flag with about five minutes left in the game. Why the early folding of the tents? Because the Lakers have a game tonight at home vs. the Spurs that's now of exceptional importance. Hopefully, LeBron James will be in uniform (and if the Lakers are really lucky, Cam Reddish as well), but assuming everyone who played on Thursday suits up for this back-to-back, sending Victor Wembenyama and the gang home with a loss is a must. The Western Conference hasn't been cooperating with the Lakers all season, and Thursday was no exception. The Lakers aren't catching any breaks, which means they can't afford to mess up opportunities. The Lakers kick off the second half of the season tonight in San Francisco against the Warriors, and they'll do it without LeBron James. He was downgraded to "out" on Wednesday with a bum ankle, well ahead of tonight's tip. It was something that LeBron himself foreshadowed at the All Star Game, noting that his treatment is ongoing and could keep him out. Could has become will. Does this mean he'll be available for Friday's game vs. San Antonio? We'll find out soon enough. It's an injury the Lakers reportedly don't think is super serious, but hope the treatment will let James finish the season strong. In the meantime, it should be a barnburner against a revitalized Warriors team that has turned things around, and certainly remembers how they lost an epic nationally televised battle with the Lakers only a couple weeks back. Even without James in the lineup, the Lakers do kick off the stretch run with reasons to be optimistic about their chances to make a little noise going forward. There are no guarantees, health will be paramount and so on and so on ... but look under the hood a little and you can see the Lakers have some stuff going for them. The Lakers managed to turn some bad mojo into good vibes heading into the break, and not surprisingly it was built at least in part around not just consistency in the rotation, but a type of consistency that played towards the preferences of the players on the roster. Of course, all (or at least much) of this happened with certain guys, namely Max Christie and Cam Reddish (let alone Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent) unavailable. That simplifies things for Darvin Ham. But they won't stay simple forever. Reddish and Christie are both expected to be back if not on Thursday when the Lakers kick off the "second half," soon after. They've both played real roles in the rotation to this point in the season. What does Darvin do when they're available again? What should it look like? Which players ought to play? How does Spencer Dinwiddie's presence impact all of this? Meanwhile, the Lakers don't have the flexibility going forward to screw up any of their remaining games against the league's lesser teams. That might be Friday against San Antonio, or two games against the Wizards, or Toronto or anyone else. Because when it's not those guys, it's nothing but high end playoff teams. In one upcoming stretch, the Lakers play seven straight against teams currently qualifying for some type of postseason play, and 10 of 12. In the wake of an All-Star Game for the ages—not in a good way—it's important to remember that for Lakers fans, the most important thing to come from the weekend wasn't anything related to the competition, but things LeBron James said. Talking to the media ahead of the game, James made it clear that he's happy in L.A., happy being a Laker, has been happy being a Laker for the last six seasons, and (assuming nothing drastic changes, and not being able to see everything in the future) anticipates finishing his career in a Lakers uniform. That, in theory at least, should put most of the speculation around LeBron's future, after the emojis and Knicks flirtations and all the other stuff. Right? Right??? Well, maybe not, but for a lot of reasons, this has always been the most likely outcome, assuming the Lakers don't decide early to call off the relationship, or LeBron doesn't have some wholly unique opportunity with another team (likely related to playing with his son). So what does that mean for the Lakers going forward? On the one hand, it gives the Lakers a sense of predictability. On the other, it reinforces the tricky nature of building a team with him as a main cog. Meanwhile, his ankle thing is real, and treatment, he said, might cause him to miss Thursday's game in San Francisco. If that's the case, should James have played at all on Sunday? Andy Kamenetzky and Cyrus Saatsaz host a crossover episode to discuss the shocking news broken this morning by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne that the Golden State Warriors reached out to the Los Angeles Lakers to discuss a potential blockbuster trade that would've traded superstar LeBron James to the Warriors. The Lakers, don't look now, have started to put some wins together. Seven of 10 now, factoring in Tuesday's 125-111 win over the Pistons at the Crypt. The starting lineup that swapped Rui Hachimua for Taurean Prince, has won five straight. The offense is flying around, the passing has elevated and turnovers are trending in the right direction. So with that in mind, and with the addition of Spencer Dinwiddie (who made his Lakers debut Tuesday), is there reason to crank up the optimism around the squad? Especially if Dinwiddie plays like he did in Dallas, there's every reason to believe he'll make a significant difference for a squad that needs more ball handling. The Lakers didn't make a deal at Thursday's trade deadline, but that doesn't mean they didn't ultimately improve the team. Over the weekend, they made the signing of former Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie official. The Lakers will have to figure out how they want to deploy him at a position of relative strength (at least among the starters) but he'll provide badly needed depth in the backcourt, and allow Darvin Ham to always have a true PG on the floor at all times. It could, as well, let Austin Reaves lean harder into the things he's best at, and not have to invest quite as much energy in operating the offense effectively. Does Dinwiddie improve the defense? The perimeter shooting? Not materially, but he will allow the Lakers to lean into strengths, and that could make just as much of a difference. What about the rest of the buyout market? Are there players available (or expected to become available) that would be worth adding? Even if it means cutting a player? Finally, how does all of this potentially impact the perception of what the team has been doing? Signing Dinwiddie is a good move, but does it make up for the inaction at the deadline? Much ado about nothing, in the end, though the writing was really on the wall. The Lakers saw Thursday's NBA trade deadline come and go, and stood on the sidelines the entire time. The biggest names on the market, including Dejounte Murray, Bruce Brown and Dorian Finney-Smith, weren't traded anywhere. But a lot of smaller names shuffled around. Still, there wasn't, at least in the mind of Rob Pelinka, a player the Lakers could acquire that they felt was worth the asking price. Are they right? Hard to know without knowing what deals they turned down. But they were limited, and ultimately decided that it was better to stand pat, and then engage on the buyout market (expected to be highlighted by Spencer Dinwiddie, who was traded to Toronto, and then released). Disappointing for Lakers fans, and (probably) Lakers players? Yes, no question. But disappointing doesn't necessarily mean they made a mistake. We shall see... Wednesday was a very quiet day on the NBA trade market. A couple minor deals, none of which had anything to do with the Lakers. Meanwhile, those with their ears to the rumor mill seemed to come away with the feeling that the odds of a significant deal going down for the Lakers are diminishing. To some degree, that's a reflection of the market. There aren't a lot of high profile players left to deal. Dejounte Murray from the Hawks, still very much tied to the Lakers, is the headliner. After that, it's Bruce Brown? Pick a Bogdanovic? Some years the market is slow. This is one of them. That won't keep people from reading as much into the tea leaves as possible, as evidenced by the online saga around D'Angelo Russell's... was it a surgery? A procedure? A treatment? There was suddenly a great deal of concern about how he was listed on the injury report... for a game happening after the deadline. 'Tis the season. So what happens if the Lakers don't make a deal? They obviously have areas where they can improve, but how much better can they get, even adding talent, if it means subtracting multiple players from the rotation? How much can they afford to "overpay," so to speak, in the interest of making a run this season? Is there anyone worth overpaying for? Finally, it's a night fans have been looking towards for a while. Kobe Bryant's statue will be unveiled outside the arena ahead of Thursday's game. It will be a tremendously emotional night. The NBA trade deadline is Thursday, and for the time being at least things are looking kinda quiet. The Lakers are still connected to just about every player on the market (Atlanta's Dejounte Murray, Toronto's Bruce Brown, Chicago's DeMar DeRozan, Brooklyn's forward combo of Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O'Neale) but that doesn't necessarily mean there will be much action. It's a seller's market, and the prizes aren't automatically worth a major premium. In a perfect world, the Lakers could add one of the players above without giving up a significant member of the rotation (or critical draft capital), but that's not the world in which we live. So will they make a deal for Murray, and send (likely) D'Angelo Russell packing (again)? Could they pull smaller deals to add depth and make a run basically with what they've got? How aggressive should they be? On the one hand, they've got a little momentum, and have shown the ability to beat anyone. On the other... they're two games over .500, and while last year's surprise run showed anything can happen, last year and this year aren't mirror images. It's tough being Rob Pelinka. The Lakers might only get one real swing at improving. Can they compromise offseason opportunities for (potentially limited) short term gain? How much pressure is LeBron James putting on the team? Is he even in position to do the leverage thing anymore? Finally, Russell was unusually candid about his approach to the trade rumors that have followed him around basically since he inked his deal with the team last summer. It wasn't more than a week ago that things looked desperate for the Lakers. They lost in back-to-back blowouts, and their star players looked very, very shaky from a health standpoint. Then they won in Boston, without LeBron James, Anthony Davis and (in the second half) Jarred Vanderbilt. Then they won in New York. And then Monday, they finished off the trip with a victory over the 10-win Hornets in Charlotte. Final score, 124-118. And while the game got a little closer than the Lakers would have preferred in the fourth, the Lakers controlled it throughout, led by Anthony Davis. His scoring and rebounding has been there all year, but as of late AD's passing has also become a really big thing for the Lakers. Monday, he finished with a triple double -- 26 points, 15 rebounds, 11 assists, plus three blocks, on 12-16 shooting. He certainly wasn't the only contributor. D'Angelo Russell led the Lakers with 28 points. Austin Reaves pitched in with 11 dimes of his own. LeBron had 26 points. The Lakers (27-25) are now two games over .500 for the first time since beating the Hornets on December 28.
