The Orlando Magic know this season is a crossroads season as they bump up against the aprons and have to determine how to move forward and improve. The Orlando Magic have ignited excitement this preseason with a surprisingly 3-point-happy offense. It has led to the Magic having some stunning offensive showings and looking like a completely different team. Sean Sweeney promised that the team would play with better spacing and play faster. That is evident. That has resulted in this 3-point uptick where the team is top 10 in both attempts per game and 3-point field goal percentage. The biggest beneficiary of this in the preseason has been Tristan da Silva. He has taken more than 10 3-pointers per game in the preseason and making them at a 38 percent clip. That is a stunning growth from a player who has at times struggled with his consistency. The Orlando Magic previewed their full potential with Jalen Suggs' return to the lineup. He immediately made an impact as the Magic came out far more aggressively than they did on Sunday and dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 132-116 victory. The Orlando Magic have had a strong game and a struggling game in the first two of their four preseason games. They have shown how their offense can evolve and the team can take the next step. But they have also left plenty on the board. The team has yet to see the whole picture come together. Several key players are still missing in action due to minor injuries. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner have yet to fully assert themselves. With just two preseason games remaining, there is still work to do. The most immediate concern is clearly getting Banchero's shooting back on track. While he is getting to the foul line and playing quicker, he has struggled to make shots in a significant way. On the bright side, the Magic are taking more threes and increasing their 3-point volume and quality looks seems to be a major emphasis. The preseason games have been a test of spacing more than anything else. The Orlando Magic stumbled in their second preseason outing against the Cleveland Cavaliers, failing to display the connectivity and sharpness that made their preseason debut so stunning and exciting. The Cavs were a much more formidable challenge and took advantage of key absences for the Magic, revealing a key weakness in Orlando's roster construction. There would always be some step back as the Magic come together and learn a new system under a new coach. Orlando still showed some good signs as they cement their new identity. The Orlando Magic are still basking a bit in a breakthrough performance in their first preseason game. The Magic's offense genuinely impressed and it feels like something the Magic can replicate and build on. There is, of course, plenty to work on. As good as the Magic were and as open as the shots they got, the Magic are unlikely to make 21 of 45 from three again. Their defense showed signs of strength, but also fouled a lot. The team can still refine itself. But if the Magic's goal was to play fast and physical, they accomplished that in their opening game. There are still a lot of questions. The biggest will be the battle for who is the backup center. Goga Bitadze gives the team the defensive anchor it is looking for at center while Nikola Vucevic is still a reliable shooter and scorer. Both will have a role to play this season. And the Magic will have to decide what they are willing to gamble on with whoever wins this battle. The other development from Wednesday's game was the emergence of Franz Wagner as a lead creator and initiator. This is an aspect of Wagner's game they have rarely relied on. The Orlando Magic's long-dormant offense showed some serious signs of life in a fast-paced and hot-shooting preseason debut against the Memphis Grizzlies. Is this a sign for the future or just a preseason anomaly? There were signs that this is something that could be permanent with how quickly the ball moved inside-out and how determined the Magic were to play with pace. At the very least, this was a proof of concept of what Sean Sweeney wants to run. The ball moved, the players were spaced well and they got the kind of threes that can devastate opponents. The Orlando Magic's playoff hopes will hinge on a lot of things. Beyond the team's two stars, it will depend on Jalen Suggs' growth as he searches for consistency. At this point, the Magic know who Suggs is and what he brings to the table. They know his ups and downs. For them to be successful, though, the Magic need the better version of Suggs more often. He knows that too. He said the message for him coming into camp was consistency and efficiency. That will reduce the eccentricities that have often characterized his game. A more focused and efficient Suggs would enable the Magic to get the most out of his defense and elevate the team up a class. So too would health.
