Description

Alternate Ending was formed when three friends realized they all shared a passion for movies. Our goal is to save you time and money by sharing our thoughts and recommendations on which movies to race to theaters for, which to watch at home and those to actively avoid. What makes Alternate Ending different from other film podcasts? Well, we're not 5 dudes in a room talking about our passion for Fight Club and Braveheart. We're two dudes, and a lady, of which our tastes are quite varied. Rob, the film-school dropout, has seen an absurd amount of movies, and if we're being honest, rounds out our Fight Club fan-base. Tim Brayton, our seasoned film critic, shares a more critical view of film, an appreciation for vintage cinema and perhaps limited-release movies that we might otherwise miss. Carrie, our casual movie-goer, reminds us all that cinema is in fact supposed to be fun and entertaining and that sometimes, just sometimes, happy endings are good. Too many film sites cater to the same kind of audience, with one overwhelming voice in the writing, but what we treasure at Alternate Ending is diversity: diversity of opinion, diversity in belief about what film should do and how it should do it. We want to celebrate our different opinions, and celebrate yours as well. This isn't a podcast for people who just want to talk about the latest hot new movies in theaters right this minute. This is a place for people who can't get to the theater until the third week a film is out; a place for people who just want to find something great to stream online after the kids have gone to sleep, a place for people whose favorite pastime is to grab a bunch of classic films on DVD from the library and watch them all weekend. It's a place that believes that every great movie is a wonderful new treasure, whether you see it the night of its premiere or fifty years later. It's a site about discovering good movies... one bad movie at a time. Pixar in the 2020s

Currently in theaters, Hoppers is the 30th feature-length film by Pixar Animation Studios. That seemed like an important enough number for us to turn to one of the evergreen questions: what's going on with Pixar, exactly? Tim is joined by Zev and Cameron to reminisce about the studio's history and mull over its recent run of films that mostly haven't lit the world on fire at the box office or in reviews. Before getting to Pixar, Zev brings Agnès Varda's very first film, La Pointe Courte, to our movie roundtable, while Cameron revisits a childhood favorite, Return to Oz. At the behest of Patreon supporter Hallvarður, Tim checks out the 1996 Icelandic dark comedy Devil's Island.

Your Movie Rocks: The Hottie & the Nottie

Welcome to Your Movie Rocks, an Alternate Ending podcast hosted by Mandy Albert. For every episode, Mandy will watch a movie assigned by her guest host, followed by a lively discussion. There's only one rule: no matter what the movie does to her, Mandy is only allowed to love it. April's Your Movie Rocks sees the return of two Alternate Ending main characters: editor-in-chief Tim Brayton back for his second go-round; and The Guy From The Hottie & the Nottie, last heard from in the episode on Spiral (2007), and visiting with us again, because, well...we're talking about The Hottie & the Nottie, the near-universally-reviled 2008 lightning rod of Paris Hilton hate. Tune in to learn whether Mandy succeeds at becoming one of the world's only Hottie & the Nottie defenders, to find out if Tim has warmed on it at all in the 15 years since he last experienced it, and to decide if you agree with Tim's assessment that this YMR choice was the cruelest thing he has ever done to another human being. We're saying goodbye to March by getting in right under the wire with a preview of the films coming out in April 2026, with mere hours to go before The Super Mario Galaxy Movie wall-jumps its way into theaters. Are Tim and Andrew excited about this billion-dollar franchise hopeful? No, they are absolutely not. But they are excited for other things, and if you want to hear what those are, you'll just have to give the episode a listen! Prior to looking ahead, we look behind, in our movie roundtable: Andrew has, uncharacteristically, managed to catch a new release, Project Hail Mary, while Tim has been given a very particular charge by Patreon supporter CRD concerning the great 2004 film Moolaadé.

A look back at 2025

With the Oscars coming up fast, it's the time of year we like to take stock of the movie year that was, and so Brennan is joined this week by an extra-large crew, as Caleb Wimble, Cameron Shaw, and Gavin McDowell come along to look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of 2025. For the movie roundtable, Gavin discusses the new Pixar movie Hoppers, Caleb visits Oscar-nominated Belgian animated feature Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, Cameron checks out the niche documentary Tight and Nerdy, and Brennan does his grim duty by viewing Scream VII.

Your Movie Rocks: Super Mario Bros.

March sees the return of Mandy's old podcasting partner (and husband) Josh, who has decided to get timely with his Your Movie Rocks picks and has assigned Mandy the original Super Mario Bros. movie. The Alternate Ending podcast was born on 3 January 2016, when the husband-and-wife team of Rob and Carrie Jarosinski shared their picks for the top 5 movies of all time. February is looking just as chilly as January, movie-wise, but that's not going to stop Brennan, Cameron, and Andrew from finding the bright-looking spots in the release schedule, which turns out to be a bit more wild and weird than it seems from the outset. For this week's movie roundtable, Andrew finally catches up with 2018's black metal biopic Lords of Chaos, while Cameron raves about current Oscar hopeful Sirāt, and Brennan sees the less awards-friendly sudsy thriller The Housemaid.
