Beyond Immersion: Spatial Sound as Practice
2026/06/30
Panel discussion with Enyang Urbiks (Urbiks Music), Andrew Rahman (Spatial Media Lab/d&b audiotechnik), Basel Naouri (TimeLab/Spatial Media Lab), Elizabeth Davis (Wilted Woman) and Doron Sadja Spatial sound is often framed through systems and setups. This conversation shifts the focus to practice. Bringing together artists working across electronic music, sound art, production and composition, the panel explores how space operates as material. How spatial thinking shapes process, performance and perception, and where technology gives way to artistic intention. Moving away from hardware-led discussions, this session centres on decision-making, restraint, movement and silence, and the evolving relationship between sound and architecture.

Season 6 of CAP Selects is a weekly series showcasing the exceptional work of our Creative Audio Production & Sound Engineering students. During the second-year of study, students are tasked with writing a five-track album from scratch that realises a creative vision. An opportunity to explore any idea they choose – the only limitations to this brief is that one of the tracks must be collaborative and another must be covers or reinterpretations of original work. This week is ilaL's Las casas ya no están. Here’s what ilaL said about the project: Las casas ya no están is an album that explores displacement, memory, and transformation through sound. It emerges from the emotional tension between leaving home and arriving in a new city: the duality of inhabiting a new place and the grief of losing what once defined home. Rather than framing this experience as a rupture, the album understands movement as a process of reconciliation between who one was and who one is becoming.

This week is lace's are you gonna cowboy up or just lie there? Here’s what lace said about the project: moving at a deliberately restrained pace, favoring low tempos, sparse arrangements, and subtle dynamic shifts, songs often hover in a state of suspension before opening briefly into distortion or saturation, stopping short of full catharsis. emotion is present but contained, as if constantly on the verge of rupture.

This week is static's la tête dans les parages. Here’s what static said about the project: this album explores themes of melancholy and apprehension toward the future through a wide spectrum of musical styles. conceived in parallel with a research paper, the album serves both as a practical application of its findings and as a critique of genre conformity within the contemporary music industry. rather than positioning itself within a clearly defined genre, la tête dans les parages deliberately navigates between contrasting musical idioms, challenging the assumption that stylistic homogeneity is a prerequisite for artistic coherence.
