On today’s Modern Manhood, it’s another bonus episode. This time it’s our full conversation with Alice Cappelle. A French youtuber, writer and internet essayist. Alice if you heard episode 2, came into my worldview through a video titled “Positive Masculinity is Overrated.” A provocative title, but a sentiment I honestly shared, As soon as I knew I wanted to do a season on tech the first person I thought of was Alice, and it was a great coincidence that she wrote a book called Collapse Feminism, which talks a lot about how internet and cultural conversation feeds into fascist and far right views. So these are the things I wanted to talk to Alice about, as well as influencers, French masculinity, her life online, as well as what she thought when one influencer responded to her video.

In our latest episode of the season titled “Man v/s Machine”, we unravel the fascinating world of online fandoms and how gender influences the way we talk, socialize, and action on the internet For years, fandom has been the heartbeat of the internet. But did you know that the way men and women engage with their fandoms varies significantly? Women have harnessed the power of fandom to create nurturing communities, driving trends like the massive sale of Stanley Mugs. They have been the ones who have turned the “social” in social media, and their thriving support of artists like One Direction, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, K-Pop, and others have shaped the way we think about online discourse. Men, on the other hand, have channeled their fandom into the digital economy, pushing the possible dangers of cryptocurrencies and NFTs. As well as pushing up people like Jordan Perterson, Joe Rogan, Andrew Tate, 4chan, and others. And who better to guide us through than YouTuber and Writer Alice Cappelle? Known for her youtube videos diving into sociology, and online interactions. Alice shares about her perspectives being a female YouTuber as well as her knowledge of fandom online. As well we look a bit at her book “Collapse Feminism” How do these diverse fandom expressions shape the internet we navigate daily? Do they bring positive culture or do they bring harm?

“Feminism is going to make it possible for the first time for men to be free.” These are the words that started this season, and they were spoken more than a 100 years ago. And by now I’m sure you’re wondering where it all went wrong. Our last episode we left off talking about the male movements that inspired major calamities such as the January 6 storming of the capital, the Charlottesville Unite The Right march, the killings of Eliott Rodgers and Alex Minassian among other events However in the background though there have been many men and many male communities trying something different, something less toxic and hateful, some are feminist and some are not. People like Jackson Katz, Tony Porter, Michael Kaufman and others are responding to a specific policy, some are responding therapeutically. Some want to help every man, and some want to help specific men. In this episode to end this season we’ll highlight the many movements that are going on to this day and think about what has and has not helped, and what inspired them.

“Men are angry at losing their kids in the divorce and taking their dream of raising them and reducing it to a child support payments and every-other weekend. Men are angry that they have a higher chance of being audited than they do of finding a successful long term relationship. Men are angry…and our anger is justified. It’s not all directed towards women nor even at feminism, but we are angry nonetheless, and when men are angry things happen” When men become angry, things happen. Well I couldn’t give a better explanation as to what happened in and after 2016. However as our episodes will tell you, men being angry and doing things is part and parcel of any men’s movements, but since this period of time was not that long ago, it’s the one that sticks most in our minds. So we will talk about one angry boy and then many "proud" boys and then some sexually deprived boys and then some black misogynist boys.

I personally didn’t hear the term The Manosphere until around the time of Gamergate, which we’ll talk about in this episode. And it’s weird because I did want to talk about masculinity and the effects it had on what I thought was my gender roles. However the masculinity discourse was completely taken over by this conversation. This idea to talk about being a man, this was the only avenue you had. It was either trying to have sex, or making fun of women, that’s it. It was a weird time and place to be. And I understood later on as to why when guys stumbled into a pro-feminist men’s organization or a conversation about masculinity that wasn’t misoginist that they thought it was a brand new thing. Because the manosphere was the only game in town, or so it seemed. This time, this era, not only encapsulates a lot of what’s wrong with the masculinity discourse now, it also brings forth the violent tactics that other internet vigilantes would use. Mainly harassment. So in this episode we'll talk about the start of Pick Up Artistry, Paul Elam and A Voice for Men, and Gamergate.
