THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971): 90mph in Brooklyn | Part 2
2026/10/16
In Part 2 of our deep dive into its production, THE FRENCH CONNECTION hits the freezing streets of New York as William Friedkin wages war against sub-zero temperatures, city traffic, and his own cast. This episode covers the shoot itself — the accidental casting decision that became one of the film's most iconic elements, the near-collapse of the production from within, and the chase sequence that changed action filmmaking forever. What Friedkin pulled off under an elevated train in Brooklyn remains one of the most dangerous things ever put on film.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971): The Long Shot | Part 1
2026/10/09
By the time William Friedkin got his hands on THE FRENCH CONNECTION, he had been turned down by every major studio in Hollywood and was running out of chances. Part 1 of this production history goes back to where the story actually starts — not on a Brooklyn street, but at a nightclub in Manhattan, where two NYPD detectives followed a hunch that cracked one of the largest narcotics cases in American history. Getting that story from real life to a Fox production deal took two years, an unproven screenwriter, and some of the most unexpected casting decisions in New Hollywood history.

Review: DIGGER (2026) | Bonus
2026/10/04
After years of death-defying action blockbusters, Tom Cruise went and made his strangest, riskiest film since MAGNOLIA — and audiences and critics have no idea what to do with it. Alejandro G. Iñárritu is known for being formally ambitious and he doesn't make things easy for his collaborators. DIGGER is no exception — this is what happens when the world's last traditional movie star hands himself over to one of cinema's most uncompromising directors. In this bonus episode, Justin and Gary share their thoughts on the most divisive film of 2026.
This film was chosen by members of CinemaShock+. For the chance to vote on next month's new release review — plus plenty of other members-only perks — head to cinemashock.net/plus to join today.

William Friedkin: Four Flops and a Clean Break | Part 2
2026/10/02
THE BOYS IN THE BAND (1970) capped a brutal run of four consecutive box-office failures that left thirty-four-year-old William Friedkin convinced his feature career was over. After walking away from David Wolper's death-defying TV specials, he threw himself into features — writing a Sonny and Cher vehicle on legal pads, clashing with studio veterans on a burlesque set, adapting Harold Pinter's menace for the screen. We trace how his single-room staging experiments pushed him to rock bottom, right before two narcotics cops changed his life for good.

William Friedkin: Death Row and Live Television | Part 1
2026/09/25
THE PEOPLE VS. PAUL CRUMP (1962) is the turning point for a young William Friedkin trying to claw his way out of live local television. We follow him from Chicago's North Side, listening in on corrupt cops at his uncle's tavern, to running hectic control rooms during the chaotic heyday of live television. An obsession with CITIZEN KANE and Stravinsky set off something in him — enough to send him into Cook County Jail with a camera, using extreme interrogation tactics to get his subject on film, then editing the raw 16mm negatives himself in his apartment. The result helped spare a condemned man from the electric chair, and set Friedkin on the path to a legendary career as a founding member of New Hollywood.

2026/09/20
In our latest bonus episode, we're reviewing Zach Cregger's new take on RESIDENT EVIL!
Chosen by CinemaShock+ members as our September new release pick, this is the director of BARBARIAN and WEAPONS taking on one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. He's not adapting a specific game, and he's not bringing back the characters longtime fans know. Instead, he drops a brand new guy into Raccoon City on the worst night of his life.

BATTLEFIELD EARTH (2000): The Seventy-Million-Dollar Scam | Part 2
2026/09/18
By the time BATTLEFIELD EARTH finally went into production, the disaster was already baked in. Born from cut-rate deal engineered by a former dry-cleaning mogul, unchecked artistic hubris, and an unyielding series of tilted camera angles. In Part 2 of our deep dive , we get into the making of the film itself — the studio rejections, the compromised production deal, the under-funded shoot, and the catastrophic reception that followed. Then it gets to the part that goes beyond bad moviemaking into something genuinely criminal: the fraud case that destroyed a production company and sent the whole ugly story into federal court.

BATTLEFIELD EARTH (2000): The Prophet and the Star | Part 1
2026/09/11
BATTLEFIELD EARTH (2000) was born long before cameras rolled, rooted in decades of calculated mythology and institutional control. In Part 1 of our look behind the film, we trace L. Ron Hubbard from his pulp fiction hustle and erratic military antics to the creation of Scientology as a tax-exempt shield. Then we examine how a young John Travolta was recruited into the fold, isolated from grounded confidantes through high-stakes disciplinary crackdowns, and handed an autographed manuscript he viewed not as a cheesy sci-fi romp, but as an absolute religious duty.

John Carpenter's THE THING (1982): Box Office Disaster | Part 4
2026/09/04
THE THING bombed at test screenings, got savaged by critics, and lost the summer box office war to E.T. — a failure so bad it nearly ended John Carpenter's career. This episode covers the fight over the film's bleak final scene, the reviews that tanked it on release, and how the home video boom rescued the film years later, turning a flop into a classic.

John Carpenter's THE THING (1982): The Frozen Shoot & the Bus Crash | Part 3
2026/08/28
Filming THE THING meant spending weeks in sub-zero temps in Stewart, British Columbia — and a bus crash that nearly killed the cast and crew before the shoot even began. In Part 3 of our deep dive, we cover the brutal Canadian location shoot, Carpenter's script rewrites happening in real time, the practical explosions built by effects coordinator Roy Arbogast, as well as the strange, difficult collaboration with legendary composer Ennio Morricone on the film's minimalist score.

John Carpenter’s THE THING (1982): Building a Monster From Scratch | Part 2
2026/08/21
THE THING (1982) shot its Antarctic scenes on the refrigerated soundstages of Universal Studios, where special effects designer Rob Bottin spent months building creature work nobody in Hollywood had attempted before. This episode breaks down the freezing interior shoots, Dean Cundey's stark visual palette, and the physical toll of pulling off the film's groundbreaking prosthetic sequences.

THE END OF OAK STREET (2026) | Review
2026/08/16
For our August new release review, we're taking a look at the latest film David Robert Mitchell, THE END OF OAK STREET.
Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor star as parents trying to hold a fractured family together when their entire suburban cul-de-sac gets dropped into the prehistoric past. We get into Mitchell's shift from IT FOLLOWS dread into full-on 1980s Amblin energy, Mike Gioulakis's wide-frame staging, and why an original, big-budget dinosaur flick feels like such a rare treat.

John Carpenter’s THE THING (1982): Nobody Trusts Anybody | Part 1
2026/08/14
THE THING (1982) spent years stuck in development as John Carpenter transitioned from low-budget indie successes to his first major studio feature. This episode covers the project's long development history, discarded script drafts from Tobe Hooper and others, Bill Lancaster's script construction, and the tense ensemble rehearsals that left the entire cast deeply paranoid before cameras even rolled.

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981): World Building on a Budget | Part 2
2026/08/07
Expanding the dystopian wasteland of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981) took dirt cheap, surprisingly effective special effects and relentless location scouting. Part 2 of our deep dive details the transition from practical prison sets to the high-tech police state, including how the crew got creative to get around city liability, a young James Cameron's uncredited hand in building the skyline, and an entire prologue that never made the final cut. None of it cost much. All of it stuck — Carpenter's grimy vision of the future became the template for a decade of imitators.

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981): A Script From the Trunk | Part 1
2026/07/31
In ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981), John Carpenter gambled his biggest budget yet on transforming a former Disney child star into the ultimate anti-authority badass. Part 1 of our deep diver covers the genesis of Snake Plissken, starting with Carpenter pulling a shelved script out of his car trunk to satisfy a studio contract. We look at the fight to cast Kurt Russell over established tough guys like Charles Bronson, the bizarre brilliance of Donald Pleasence as the President, and the punishing reality of shooting entirely at night in the rubble of East St. Louis.
