You Can Move Forward Without A Full Map
2026/10/17
You can make a careful, prayerful decision and still wake up later wondering if you just ruined everything. That late-night doubt is common, and it can quietly push us back into hesitation, overthinking, and fear-based second-guessing. I want to help you move forward anyway, with wisdom and calm, even when you cannot see where the road leads next.
We start with a simple picture from Psalm 119:105: God’s Word is a lamp to your feet, not a floodlight for the next 20 miles. If you keep demanding total certainty before you act, you will stay stuck. I talk about Abraham’s call to leave home without a detailed itinerary, and why prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel matter, while also recognizing there comes a moment when preparation has to give way to action.
Drawing from years of crisis response and counseling, I explain why the most stabilizing question is often, “What’s the next thing we need to take care of?” That focus helps us regain footing when life feels overwhelming. We also sort out the difference between healthy reflection and endless rumination, and we look at what everyday courage really looks like: the phone call, the honest conversation, the next responsible step.
If you are wrestling with anxiety, uncertainty, or decision-making fatigue, listen through to the end for a practical 24-hour challenge and a free Tactical Prayer Guide. Subscribe for more biblically grounded tools, share this with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

Resilient Faith: Stop Overthinking and Make the Choice
2026/10/08
Indecision can feel like you are being careful, but it often acts like a slow leak on your energy, your peace, and your faith. I talk through why the hardest part is not always the decision itself, but the endless replaying, rehearsing, and second-guessing that keeps you awake at 3 a.m. If you have been stuck in “one more round of thinking,” you are not alone, and you are not broken. You may simply be trapped in a pattern where thinking never becomes choosing.
Drawing from my years in counseling and my Army experience, I share a practical framework for decision making that starts with wisdom: gather real information, separate facts from assumptions, and understand risk. Then we name the danger zone where “waiting” turns into a hiding place. Paralysis by analysis can look spiritual on the outside, especially when fear learns our vocabulary and starts sounding reasonable. We unpack why faith is not the same as certainty, and why God often gives enough light for the next step instead of the full map.
You will also hear a simple question that cuts through perfectionism and anxiety: “What is the next faithful thing to do?” That one shift turns resilient faith into action, because courage usually shows up while we move, not before we move. If you are ready to stop circle-thinking and take a faithful step forward, listen now, then subscribe, share this with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review. What decision are you ready to choose today?

Train Before The Crisis
2026/09/29
One phone call can drop you into a moment you never trained for and that’s exactly why training matters. I’m John Thurman, a therapist and crisis responder, and I’m unpacking a lesson I learned the hard way: the middle of pressure is a terrible time to decide what you believe, what matters, and how you’ll respond.
We take that big idea and bring it down to everyday life, where most of us actually fight our toughest battles. Picture a normal Tuesday afternoon, then a message lands that pushes the exact right button. Your body reacts, your mind fills in the blanks, and you can feel yourself sliding into an old pattern. We talk about how resilient faith shows up right there, in the small space between the trigger and what you do next. Proverbs 16:32 gives a surprising definition of strength, and the fruit of the Spirit reminds us that self-control isn’t instant; it’s grown.
Along the way, I connect spiritual formation with how the brain builds familiar pathways, why repeated practice matters, and how a simple prayer like “Lord help me” can create real breathing room. You’ll leave with practical questions to slow assumptions, choose a response you’ll respect later, and keep growing even when progress looks quiet and ordinary. If this helped, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs a calmer Tuesday, and leave a review so more people can find the podcast.

How To Slow Down Your Reaction To Triggers
2026/09/16
Your phone buzzes, you glance at the name, and your body reacts before you read a single word. That split second matters more than we think because it shows how fast a trigger can hijack our thoughts, emotions, and next move.
I talk through a simple, everyday scenario that turns into a full spiral: a vague text like “Can we talk later?” Suddenly we’re writing a whole story in our head, borrowing fear from yesterday and spending it on today. That’s where “guarding your gate” gets practical. I unpack the idea of a Sentry at the gate of your mind and heart, how past conflict and hurt can set off internal alarms, and why an alarm isn't the same as truth.
Then we get into tools you can actually use right away: asking “What do I actually know?”, doing a quick “thought biopsy” to test assumptions, and applying 2 Corinthians 10:5 to take thoughts captive instead of obeying them. I also lean on James’ wisdom about being quick to listen and slow to speak, because often the most spiritual thing we can do is pause. Put the phone down, breathe, and pray a short prayer like “Holy Spirit, help me see what is true.” That little space between reaction and response can become holy ground.
If you want to practice these thought-management and resilient-faith skills, I also mention my Guard One Gate seven-day challenge (link). Subscribe, share this with a friend who’s feeling triggered lately, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

Who Is Guarding The Gate To Your Thoughts
2026/09/01
Your phone has a password. Your bank has alerts. Your house may even have cameras. But what about the gate that shapes your whole life: your mind? We’re asking one urgent question that can change how you handle anxiety, fear, and stress in real time: Who is guarding your gate?
PUT THIS SHORTCAST INTO PRACTICE
I’ve created a free two-page Guard One Gate: A 7-Day Resilient Faith Practice to help you identify one gate that needs your attention, decide what needs less access, and make more room for what strengthens your faith.

As a counselor who’s sat with people in crisis, I’ve seen how the event is only part of the battle. The other part is the meaning we assign to it and the stories our brains create under pressure. We talk about Proverbs 4:23 and why “guard your heart” is not denial; it’s discernment. Then we walk through practical ways to separate facts from assumptions with one clarifying question: “What do I actually know?”
We also lean into Philippians 4:8 as a thought filter, and we make space for the Holy Spirit to bring clarity when fear runs away with you. We’ll name the spiritual dimension too: accusations, shame, and doubt that try to get a key to the house. The takeaway is simple and actionable: Catch it. Check it. Choose. If you want a steadier thought life and a more resilient faith for life's storms, press play, share this with a friend, and subscribe and leave a review so more people can find these tools.

Biblical Hope That Holds
2026/08/18
One sentence can reframe everything you think you know about hope. While serving as a contractor on a State Department mental health team in the Democratic Republic of Congo, I met a woman I’ll call Nicole, and her story has stayed with me for years. She had endured political violence, the murder of her husband, the loss of two children, and a dangerous journey on foot with her two surviving kids. When I asked how she survived, she paused, looked me in the eye, and said words I’ll never forget: “My only hope is Jesus.”
That moment helps me name what biblical hope really is. We toss the word “hope” around as a synonym for wishing things go our way, but Scripture gives it a stronger meaning: a settled confidence that God will remain faithful because his character never changes. That is not optimism, and it is not denial. It is the kind of resilient faith that can face the storm without being ruled by it, because hope is anchored somewhere deeper than circumstances.
We also talk about Hebrews 6:19 and its image of “an anchor for the soul, firm and secure,” plus the ordinary spiritual practices that quietly strengthen that anchor over time: steady time in God’s Word, honest prayer that makes room for fear and lament, and refusing to walk alone by leaning on Christian community. Before you go, I offer a simple 10-minute reflection to help you examine what you’re anchoring your hope in today.
If this encouraged you, subscribe for more, share it with a friend who needs steadiness right now, and leave a review so more people can find the podcast.

When Life Falls Apart And Faith Still Shows Up
2026/06/30
Grief has a way of stripping life down to the raw truth. When the unthinkable happens, does your faith collapse, or can it bend without breaking? John Thurman explores resilient faith through the story of Dr. W. Lee Warren, a Christian neurosurgeon and bestselling author whose life is marked by PTSD, devastating loss, and a hard-won decision to trust God anyway.
We talk about why grief is not an intellectual exercise but a presence you carry, and why honest lament is not a faith failure. If you feel pressure to look polished while you hurt, we offer a different path: name the pain, bring it to God, and refuse the brittle spirituality that snaps under strain. We also dig into what it means to hold grief and trust together, placing suffering inside God’s bigger redemptive story and letting endurance and character form over time.
You’ll walk away with four clear steps to build resilient faith: grieve honestly, trust God while you’re hurting, stay connected to community, and practice simple daily spiritual rhythms like prayer, Scripture, and worship. John closes with practical actions you can take today, plus an invitation to download the Tactical Prayer Reset and get updates on his upcoming book, Resilient Faith: Standing Strong in the Storms of Life. Resilient Faith Habits: Three Daily Habits That Prepare Your Faith For Any Storm
2026/06/17
Most people don’t think about faith until the storm hits a diagnosis, a job loss, a broken relationship, or a season of anxiety and depression. We take a different approach: resilient faith is built on normal days, through small choices that compound over time. Using Job as a picture, we talk about why spiritual strength is formed long before suffering arrives and how you can start training your faith’s reflexes today.
We walk through three biblical habits that help Christians stand strong when life gets hard. First, we build a “truth arsenal” by writing, memorizing, speaking, and practicing God’s promises until truth comes faster than panic. We share practical ways to do a five-minute promise routine, collect verses by theme, and practice retrieval out loud so fear doesn’t get the final word. We also slow down in Philippians 4:6-7 and show how Scripture can calm a racing mind.
Next, we practice gratitude as daily training, not a shallow platitude. We name specific gifts, meditate on gratitude-fueling Scriptures, and use a short nightly list of blessings to reset our perspective and support better rest. Finally, we anchor in community because resilient faith is rarely developed alone. We talk about church connection, small groups, prayer partners, serving together, and telling your story to strengthen future trust.
If you want practical Christian encouragement, Bible-based habits, and tools for spiritual resilience, press play and take the three-step challenge. Subscribe, share with a friend who needs hope, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

Spare Tire Christianity Won’t Get You Far
2026/06/02
When life hits hard, most of us don’t need another clever idea. We need a foundation that doesn’t move. We’re talking about a simple but urgent reminder: the Bible isn’t just a good book, it’s God’s Word and it’s meant to function as our standard operating procedure for everyday life.
We walk through why Scripture carries real authority and why it becomes the bedrock of resilient faith. We break down four qualities that make the Bible indispensable: it’s necessary like oxygen, sufficient for salvation and guidance, clear enough for ordinary people to understand, and authoritative in a world of shifting opinions. From there, we define biblical resilience the way the Bible does, not as raw grit, but as inner character formed by faith under pressure. We connect the dots to James 1:2–4 and Romans 8:28, showing how trials can produce endurance and how God can work through suffering toward hope.
We also get concrete. We share easy next steps to build a daily Bible habit, memorize key promises for hard times, test decisions against Scripture, pray for humility and clarity, and stay connected to other believers. We even mention practical tools like the free YouVersion Bible App and readable options like the New Living Translation to make consistent Bible study simpler.

Stop Reacting And Start Building Resilient Faith
2026/05/03
Reaction mode is exhausting because it keeps you living on defense. I want something better for you: resilient faith that can take a hit, tell the truth, and still move forward with purpose. In this shortcast, I share a story from my teenage years at Georgia Military College that branded a lesson into me for life: there are no shortcuts to accountability. Owning your mess is not shame, it is the starting line for growth.
I break down a simple framework I use as a therapist, chaplain, and pastor: the sentry and the officer in charge. The sentry is your inner guard, tied to the amygdala and your threat response, always asking “Is it safe?” The officer in charge is your inner leader, guided by the Holy Spirit and Scripture, asking “What are we building?” When the sentry runs everything, we drift into safe mediocrity, controlling our world and avoiding risk. When the OIC develops, we learn to face fear without letting it steer the wheel.
We also talk about trauma and the cultural script that says you are only a product of what happened to you. Trauma is real, but it does not have to be your identity. I explain personal responsibility in a way that does not blame victims, and I offer a practical path toward biblical post-traumatic growth: daily disciplines, honest reflection, and grace that leads to progress instead of blame. You’ll leave with three concrete practices, including living Coram Deo, “before the face of God,” plus a quick exercise you can do tonight.
If this helps you, subscribe, share it with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

When Fear Keeps You Stuck
2026/04/15
Fear doesn’t just scare us; it can quietly shrink our lives until we call “stuck” normal. We talk about why fear shows up for everyone, how it can function like a biological alarm, and what happens when that alarm misfires and starts shaping your story, your relationships, and your spiritual growth.
We anchor the conversation in 2 Timothy 1:7 and push back on the idea that fear gets to write the last chapter. Then we name six ways fear binds us, from predicting failure with false certainty to hiding behind “being careful,” eroding integrity, stacking up regret, chasing control through safety, and halting growth. If you’ve felt yourself drifting from what you know God is calling you to do, this will put language to it without piling on shame.
We also share three simple reframes to move from fear to faith: treat fear as information, remember risk is the cost of possibility, and practice courage as something you cultivate through small, consistent action. Finally, we walk through five practical steps you can start today, plus what to watch for when anxiety becomes constant, and it’s time to seek help from counselors, pastors, or medical professionals.
If this encouraged you, subscribe, share it with a friend who feels stalled, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What’s one fear you’re ready to name and face this week?

How A Growth Mindset Transforms Shame Into Hope
2026/03/03
Shame can feel like a verdict, but it’s often just an old script that needs a rewrite. We unpack how to move from shame-based thinking to growth-based thinking with clear definitions, simple reframes, and small daily habits that build real momentum. Starting with Regina’s story and the voice that says “not good enough,” we explore the difference between a fixed mindset that treats failure as fate and a growth mindset that treats failure as feedback—then we connect that to the renewing of the mind called for in Scripture.
We share a powerful example from Joni Eareckson Tada, whose journey from “Why did this happen?” to “How can God use this?” reframed her life and launched a global ministry serving people with disabilities and veterans. Her story shows how faith, purpose, and community can redirect the brain’s alarms toward hope and action. Along the way, we highlight key verses like Romans 12:2 and Philippians 1:6 that anchor a faith-shaped growth mindset, reminding us that transformation is a process, not a performance.
Then we get practical. You’ll hear common shame scripts and their growth-focused counterstatements, plus five daily prompts to build traction: name one small step after failure, find a Scripture that speaks to your fear, coach yourself like a friend, notice what God is already doing, and choose a tiny practice you can repeat today. We also talk about cutting comparison by reframing your social media inputs and building tiny habits that train your thoughts without overwhelm. By the end, you’ll have a toolkit to quiet the inner critic, recover faster after mistakes, and take the next right step with confidence.
If this resonates, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs encouragement, and leave a review to help others find it. Your story isn’t over—start the next chapter today.

How Small Spiritual Habits Rewire Your Brain
2026/02/23
What if peace wasn’t a rare mood but a trained response? We dig into the tension between the brain’s survival wiring and the life Scripture invites us to live, then map out four small practices that steadily turn panic into prayer and worry into wise action. Drawing on neuroplasticity and the renewing of the mind, we show how repetition creates new neural pathways and why biology is not destiny for your thought life.
We start by naming negativity bias—the reason one criticism can overshadow ten compliments—and offer a simple model: Velcro for bad, Teflon for good. From there, we walk through tactical prayer that pairs slow breathing with Scripture to calm the nervous system, a savoring approach to Scripture meditation that embeds truth deeper than fear, deliberate nightly gratitude that teaches the brain to notice safety and provision, and small acts of service that shift attention outward and light up reward circuits. Each practice is short, clear, and doable in real life, designed to be repeated until it becomes your new default.
You’ll also hear a client story of 3 a.m. panic transformed through six rounds of breath prayer and a one-page journal, plus practical coaching on setting tiny goals, tracking habits, and recruiting a friend or small group for accountability. The thread through it all is simple: repeat, repeat, repeat. Pick one habit today, keep it tiny, and let the combination of faith and neuroscience reshape your inner world. If this helps, share it with someone who needs calm, subscribe for more tools to build resilient faith, and leave a review with the one practice you’ll start this week.

Quiet The Sentry Within
2026/02/08
Ever feel your heart race over a vague email, a late text, or a headline that won’t let go? We explore how to calm that inner sentry—the amygdala—so it protects rather than panics, blending practical neuroscience with rooted Christian faith to build everyday resilience. John opens with a vivid Fort Bragg night watch story to illustrate why your brain is wired for alarms and how negativity bias makes bad news sticky while letting good moments slide away.
From there, we unpack why uncertainty fuels worst-case thinking and how modern doomscrolling keeps the alarm blaring. Then we shift to hope: breath-prayer with 2 Timothy 1:7 to steady your nervous system, a simple method to name the alarm and gain mental space, and a fact-grounding habit that pulls you out of runaway assumptions. You’ll learn why movement metabolizes stress chemicals, how connection and prayer regulate our bodies, and what it means to keep watch without living in fear.
We also share a repeatable, three-part daily plan that trains your brain through neuroplasticity and spiritual practice: a morning reading of Romans 12:2 with one written truth, a midday five-minute movement break paired with prayer, and an evening reflection on God’s goodness plus five small wins. These habits are small by design, building a stable foundation for emotional health, stronger relationships, and a deeper walk of faith. Your sentry isn’t your enemy—it can learn new orders.
Grab the free Tactical Prayer Guide from the show notes to keep the steps close at hand. If this helped, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find tools to breathe steady, think clearly, and live with courage.

Four Practical Ways To Protect Your Marriage During The Holidays
2025/12/15
Holiday plans look perfect on paper—until the calendar crowds out connection. We unpack a simple, human blueprint for navigating December without sacrificing your marriage: turn toward each other in small, daily ways, share the load with clarity, offer real encouragement, and build margin so you can breathe. Along the way, John shares a lighthearted story about Christmas lights, unspoken expectations, and how a quick conversation can shift the mood of the whole house.
We start with the power of tiny rituals: five minutes on the couch, a quiet morning coffee, a short prayer or devotional that recenters the relationship before the day races ahead. From there, we get practical about teamwork: listing holiday tasks, dividing by strengths, and using a shared plan to prevent resentment. Encouragement takes center stage with simple phrases that carry outsized impact, plus ways to use eye contact, tone, and appropriate touch to communicate respect and gratitude when stress runs high.
Finally, we make a case for margin. You’ll hear how to decide which traditions to keep, which to simplify, and how to build buffers into travel, hosting, and family events. The goal isn’t doing more; it’s doing what matters most with a calmer heart. Whether you’re juggling kids’ concerts, office parties, or cross-country flights, these four strategies help you create a season marked by peace, presence, and genuine connection.
If this conversation encourages you, share it with a friend, subscribe to more resilient relationship tools, and leave a review to help others find the show. Which strategy will you try first?
