There was a group assembled by the BBT and GBC combinedly in 2019 in Tirupati, called the Editorial Review Panel of eleven highly trusted and literary devotees who nonpartisan go through every sentence in the Bhagavad-gītā and look at all the history of everything that happened and the standards. They took months just to lay down a foundation for, "Okay, no mistakes, but no unnecessary changes." That was the intention of everyone: the GBC, the BBT trustees, everyone, to make sure that there was nothing that was unnecessarily done, what to speak of changing the philosophy. In my conversations with Pradyumna, asking about the topic itself, I don't know anybody who's as much an insider as Pradyumna. He says it's ludicrous to think that you would leave certain mistakes in Śrīla Prabhupāda's books that would change the siddhānta. He said, "It's our duty, as those who are carrying on the legacy of Prabhupāda, to make sure that there was not something misplaced." For instance, in the 1972 Bhagavad-gītā, there are places where verses are inaccurately attributed to certain passages. Those got mixed up, and there are things that were missed, obviously. So those had to be corrected, and there are parts that are missing. For instance, the Gītā-māhātmya. We read the Gītā-māhātmya when we were in Kurukṣetra to glorify the Bhagavad-gītā. Prabhupāda included that in the introduction because he chanted the verses. It's in the recording, but the original editors took it out. Why did they cut it out? Nothing sinister; it's just they didn't know Sanskrit, nor did they have any reference point. Believe it or not, there was a time when there were no computers in the world, and good luck finding the Gītā-māhātmya somewhere and then trying to put the verses back in if you didn't know Sanskrit and you didn't know where to find it. So they just left it out. The next wave of editors realized what had happened; they put it back in. In the Vedas, the above-mentioned four activities are prescribed in the regulative way so that there will not be any undue competition for sense gratification. But Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is transcendental to all these sense gratificatory activities. It is purely transcendental literature which can be understood only by the pure devotees of the Lord who are transcendental to competitive sense gratification. In the material world there is keen competition between animal and animal, man and man, community and community, nation and nation. But the devotees of the Lord rise above such competitions. They do not compete with the materialist because they are on the path back to Godhead where life is eternal and blissful. Such transcendentalists are nonenvious and pure in heart. In the material world, everyone is envious of everyone else, and therefore there is competition. But the transcendental devotees of the Lord are not only free from material envy, but are well-wishers to everyone, and they strive to establish a competitionless society with God in the center. Whatever work we have done on ourselves, we have the moral right —(that's not the phrase, but something like that) to suggest it to others; otherwise, we're hypocritical. You find also that if you are sense controlled, other living entities notice it, because it's so rare. People notice it in the way you walk, in the way you talk to them, and especially the way you react to them, because people are used to an algorithm that's there in the material world, and it's based on the combination of the modes of material nature. If there is something agitating, most people show agitation. And if you don't show agitation, people are startled, because they notice that you aren't following the algorithm. They want to know, "What's with you?" I hear it from devotees all the time who go to work as engineers or puppeteers or whatever they do, and then they look like everybody else, but people start asking them, "Hey, wait a minute, what's your thing? You're different from everybody else, besides the fact that you bring your own lunch and you don't eat with us." People do notice that. So the system is vāco vegam. That's where Rūpa Gosvāmī starts: start with yourself, and then apratīvīṁ nāśiṣyat—everybody else becomes your student. Because the masters of the world are the senses; if you've mastered the senses, watch out, because you've got nothing to lose and all to gain, and nobody can stop you, because that's the only thing that stops everybody. As long as the Lord remained at Purī, thousands of His devotees used to come to see Him during the Ratha-yātrā car festival of Lord Jagannātha. And during the car festival, the washing of the Guṇḍicā temple under the direct supervision of the Lord was an important function. The Lord’s congregational saṅkīrtana movement at Purī was a unique exhibition for the mass of people. That is the way to turn the mass mind towards spiritual realization. The Lord inaugurated this system of mass saṅkīrtana, and leaders of all countries can take advantage of this spiritual movement in order to keep the mass of people in a pure state of peace and friendship with one another. This is now the demand of the present human society all over the world. Nithyanānda Prabhu heard all of these stories and decided that these two fallen souls must be the first to be delivered. If they were delivered from their sinful life, then the good name of Lord Caitanya would be even still more glorified. Thinking in this way, Nithyanānda Prabhu and Haridāsa pushed their way through the crowd and asked the two brothers to chant the holy name of Lord Hari. The drunken brothers became enraged upon this request and attacked Nithyanānda Prabhu with filthy language. Both brothers chased them a considerable distance. In the evening, the report of the preaching work was submitted to the Lord, and He was glad to learn that Nithyanānda and Haridāsa had attempted to deliver such a stupid pair of fellows. The next day, Nithyanānda Prabhu went to see the brothers, and as soon as he approached them, one of them threw a piece of an earthen pot at him. This struck him on the forehead, and immediately blood began to flow. But Nithyanānda Prabhu was so kind that instead of protesting this heinous act, he said, "It does not matter that you two have thrown this stone at me; I still request you to chant the holy name of Lord Hari. When a living being is perfect, he is aware of everything that happens, and since the Supreme Person is all-perfect, it is quite natural that He knows everything in all detail. Consequently the perfect personality is addressed in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam as Vāsudeva, or one who lives everywhere in full consciousness and in full possession of His complete energy. All of this is clearly explained in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and the reader has ample opportunity to study this critically. In the modern age Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu preached the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam by practical demonstration. It is easier to penetrate into the topics of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam through the medium of Śrī Caitanya’s causeless mercy. Therefore a short sketch of His life and precepts is inserted herein to help the reader understand the real merit of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. It is imperative that one learn the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam from the person Bhāgavatam. The person Bhāgavatam is one whose very life is Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam in practice. Since Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the Absolute Personality of Godhead, He is both Bhagavān and Bhāgavatam in person and in sound. Devarsi Narada's understanding of this divine science was obtained from Brahma. The great sage Krsna Dvaipayana Vyasa, who was empowered to compile the Vedic literatures, became a disciple of Devarsi Narada. Sripada Madhvacarya, the founder of the suddha-dvaita school of Vedanta philosophy, who visited Vyasadeva at Badarikasrama in the thirteenth century to learn from him Vedanta philosophy, calls himself a servant of Krsna Dvaipayana Vyasa. Purnaprajna Tirtha [Madhva] is the guru and sole refuge of Padmanabha Tirtha. And helping oneself means, he said, putting yourself in front of transcendental sound vibration. There's a great, great advantage to just showing up. Some people say, "I'm unqualified. I, I can't go there." Well, go there, and then you become qualified. Some people say, "I'm overqualified." Those people aren't advanced enough for me. So go there and give them your association so they can become qualified. And this is smārtāḥ smarantas ca—mitho 'ghaugha-haraṁ harim. If you show up in the association of devotees, then you'll be carried along; you'll be lifted to the next level. When I look back over my life in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, it seems to have gone very quickly, and it seems like one thing—just, yeah, one thing. But if I think of all the varieties of programs that I've had the advantage of going to, and the different devotees I have had the opportunity to associate with, it's a lot. There is a lot to be consumed and a lot of association to be had because of the paramparā. It's delivered to us here, right directly on our own planet. It's on our own planet—we can have that association. So to answer your question, we should try to show up for everything, even if we don't feel like it, and even if we feel something else. Once we do, we'll come to a higher level. And the cumulative effect of showing up for everything you can possibly show up for, means that it's very possible that you could tip the scale and move into the highest level of devotional service—and even go back to Godhead in this lifetime—just for being there. Deep inside everybody knows God's there, but they're like (gestures ignoring ). When you ignore God and you push Him away, you hold back, there is one result. There is one obligation for such a person. There is one way to pass your time if you are holding away God. It comes in one word: pachinko. Pachinko is the stupidest thing. What is it? The whole material world could be described in one word: pachinko, delulu. It's complete delusion. Trains running, where are they going? Where are they driving little cars for? It's all pachinko. Bhāgavatam—it saves you from pachinko. To save us from pachinko—the pachinko of our mind, bing bing bing bing, and the pachinko of the whole world. Lifetime after lifetime of pachinko. Animals are just doing pachinko, and you come to the human life, and then let's do more pachinko! But you don't have any other choice unless you have the Bhāgavatam. So this is a very satisfying conversation because the king knows all this, and now he's saying, "Please tell me the alternative. I'm completely open to hearing," because he knows that there's something substantial to understand. Śrīla Prabhupāda had spoken Kṛṣṇa-kathā in one place in New York City, and then, from the power of his speech, the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement spread to millions of people around the world. It is especially mentioned in this purport that the Yogendras had no inclination for deception or exploitation. One shloka spoken by Parikshit Maharaja in the 10th Canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.1.16) indicates the power of sound vibration in which the speaker has no desire to exploit or deceive the audience. He said, vāsudeva-kathā-praśnaḥ puruṣāṁs trīn punāti hi vaktāraṁ pracchakaṁ śrotṝṁs tat-pāda-salilaṁ yathā Which means that when a pure person, a pure devotee, speaks the Bhagavatam, then three kinds of people, three entities, are purified: first, the speaker; second, the inquirer; third, everybody else who walks by and hears anything.. He also mentions that previously I had some anger in my heart, because Parikshit went to the forest to hunt, and then he wasn't greeted properly by Shamika Rishi, and Parikshit Maharaj became angry and road rage. He put a snake around the neck of the sage and then walked out. He said, "Because I was thirsty, that was a material urge, then I got into all this trouble." He said, "pibantam tvan-mukhāmbhoja-cyutaṁ hari-kathāmṛtam". But now that I'm sitting here listening to you, I'm not thirsty anymore. I don't want to drink, even though I'm not drinking anything; I'm not even thirsty." He said, "cyutaṁ hari-kathāmṛtam". Cyutam means something's falling. What's falling? This hari-kathā. It's falling from the mouth of Śukadeva, 'cyutaṁ hari-kathāmṛtam,' and I'm drinking that nectar. Therefore I'm not thirsty, I'm not tired and I'm not hungry. So the gopis say that this is the best philanthropy (SB 10.31.9) tava kathāmṛtaṁ tapta-jīvanaṁ kavibhir īḍitaṁ kalmaṣāpaham śravaṇa-maṅgalaṁ śrīmad ātataṁ bhuvi gṛṇanti ye bhūri-dā janāḥ They said, "Those who are teaching, speaking hari-kathā, they're bhūridā. They are the best givers. There is no better giver than the one who gives pure kṛṣṇa-kathā: tava kathāmṛtaṁ tapta-jīvanam. All the jīvas are getting burned. That's what that means. Tapasya comes from tapa; it means to be burned. So tapta-jīvanam—all the scorched jīvas are getting soothed by amṛta that comes from topics about Krishna. śravaṇa-maṅgalam: as soon as it's spoken, then it creates auspiciousness, and therefore, Nimi Maharaj is very advanced.
