Following Jesus in the Age of AI (Jason Thacker- Re-broadcast)
2026/09/30
In this re-air episode of Words of Life, Bernie Dake revisits a conversation with professor, author, and speaker Jason Thacker about the rise of artificial intelligence and what it means for followers of Jesus. Jason offers a biblical perspective on the questions AI raises about technology, humanity, wisdom, and the way we engage an ever-changing world. Rather than blindly embracing new technology or simply rejecting it, Jason encourages Christians to slow down, ask thoughtful questions, and consider how technology is shaping the way we see God, ourselves, and one another. Parenting Through the Hard Parts of the School Year
2026/09/23
What do our kids really need from us during the school year? As we close our Back to School series, we take a step back from grades, schedules, activities, and expectations to talk about something deeper: what it means to be present for our children as they navigate the challenges of growing up. Our panel reflects on the hopes and prayers they have for their children this school year, from developing gratitude and kindness to knowing who they are, knowing God, and building healthy friendships. But they also talk honestly about the difficult moments that come with parenting, including stress, disappointment, friendship struggles, and the times when our kids simply need a safe place to fall apart. This conversation also explores the importance of community. Parents don't have to navigate the school year in isolation. Teachers, counselors, youth leaders, mentors, friends, churches, and other parents can all play an important role in helping children grow. As this Back to School series comes to a close, join us for an encouraging conversation and a prayer for parents, students, teachers, friendships, and the year ahead. When Your Child Starts Questioning Their Faith
2026/09/16
What do you do when your child starts asking questions about faith, God, the Bible, or even whether they believe at all anymore? In this episode of Words of Life, our Back to School series continues with an honest conversation about helping children and teenagers develop a faith that is truly their own. As kids grow older, they encounter new ideas, difficult experiences, outside influences, and questions that can challenge the faith they were taught as children. For Christian parents, those questions can be scary. But doubt and questions don't necessarily mean a child is walking away from God. In fact, asking questions can be an important part of developing a mature and lasting faith. The Salvation Army’s Response to 9/11
2026/09/09
Twenty-five years ago, the United States experienced the devastating terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Thousands of lives were lost, families were changed forever, and a nation was left grieving and searching for hope. In this special episode of Words of Life, we remember September 11th through the experiences of people who witnessed the attacks and participated in The Salvation Army’s response in the days and weeks that followed. From Ground Zero in New York City to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., Salvation Army teams provided meals, water, emergency relief supplies, emotional and spiritual care, and a compassionate presence to firefighters, first responders, military personnel, volunteers, families, and others affected by the tragedy. The Salvation Army also served people stranded across the country and in Canada when hundreds of flights were diverted following the attacks. The Best Parenting Conversations Happen in Ordinary Moments
2026/09/02
In this episode our panel of teachers and parents discuss practical ways parents can support their children’s emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being in the ordinary rhythms of family life. The conversation centers on building trust, making space for honest conversations, creating room for fun, and making wise choices around phones and schedules. It’s a parenting discussion with a strong emphasis on relationship, consistency, and teamwork. Key topics Supporting kids emotionally is different from supporting them academically, and both matter. Letting kids talk first, then listening before trying to solve the problem, helps build trust. Timing matters when asking questions, and consistency helps kids learn the door is always open. Family dinner, prayer requests, and praying for one another help children feel known and teach empathy. Helping Kids Navigate School Without Tying Identity to Grades
2026/08/26
In this episode, we focus on how parents can support their children academically without making performance feel like identity. It covers practical ways to work with teachers, understand the real reasons behind struggling grades, and encourage independence, especially as kids get older. It also addresses how AI is changing schoolwork and why those conversations need to start early. Key topics Parents often focus on grades and assignments, but the deeper goal is helping kids grow without linking worth to performance. One major theme is resisting the urge to rescue children from struggle, since doing too much can keep them from learning resilience. Technology now gives parents more school visibility than ever through notifications, grade trackers, and teacher posted class guides, but that can also create information overload. The conversation emphasizes that knowing the assignment is not the same as understanding what a child is learning or taking away from it. 2026/08/19
For many families, it's easy to focus on grades. But lasting success is about much more than report cards. This week our panel discusses: Why every child's academic journey looks different How belonging impacts learning The importance of relationships with teachers and classmates Why employers increasingly value communication and teamwork Helping children through "productive struggle" Supporting homework without taking over Teaching responsibility and independence Parents don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give our children is the confidence to work through challenges while knowing we're there to support them. Join us as we continue our Back to School series. What Does Biblical Justice Really Look Like?
2026/08/05
How can ordinary people make an extraordinary difference? This week on Words of Life, we conclude our Biblical Justice series by looking beyond the problems and toward the people. Over the past several weeks, we've explored mental health, refugees, human trafficking, correctional ministries, poverty, and homelessness through conversations with ministry leaders serving on the front lines. While each issue is unique, one truth has echoed throughout every episode: People need people. In this final conversation, our panel discusses the vital role the Church can play in breaking cycles of poverty, restoring dignity, and building authentic community. Whether it's mentoring someone, teaching practical life skills, serving families living in extended-stay hotels, connecting individuals with local resources, or simply sharing a meal together, every act of compassion points people toward the love of Christ. You'll also hear inspiring stories of everyday believers making an eternal impact, including teenagers who sacrificed their own Christmas gifts to bless women experiencing homelessness, and churches creating spaces where people find belonging instead of isolation. Breaking the Cycle of Poverty: Hope Beyond Charity
2026/07/29
What if helping someone isn't enough? What if God calls us to walk alongside them instead? This week on Words of Life, we continue our Biblical Justice series by exploring one of today's most pressing issues: poverty and homelessness. Millions of individuals and families across the United States face housing insecurity, financial hardship, mental health challenges, and generational poverty. But these struggles rarely stem from one cause. They're often the result of multiple crises intersecting at once. In this thoughtful roundtable discussion, our ministry leaders unpack the realities behind poverty, challenge common misconceptions about homelessness, and explore how the Church can move beyond temporary charity toward lasting transformation. Together, they discuss The Salvation Army's Pathway of Hope initiative, a holistic ministry designed to help families break cycles of poverty through case management, church community, and strategic partnerships. "God Sees Me": Hannah's Powerful Story of Faith, Disability, and Belonging
2026/07/22
What does true belonging look like? This week on Words of Life, we pause our Biblical Justice roundtable series to share a deeply moving testimony from Hannah Boyd, a young woman whose life has been marked by extraordinary challenges, unwavering faith, and contagious joy. After suffering a traumatic brain injury as an infant, doctors believed Hannah would never walk, talk, or live independently. Yet God had other plans. In this heartfelt conversation with Major Anne Westmoreland, Hannah shares how God carried her through childhood, a devastating mental health crisis, and years of feeling overlooked by churches. She also explains how finding The Salvation Army gave her something she'd been longing for all her life: a place where she wasn't defined by her wheelchair, but loved simply as Hannah. Human Trafficking: Prevention, Recovery, and Hope
2026/07/15
Human trafficking generates hundreds of billions of dollars in illegal profits every year, making it one of the largest criminal industries in the world. But behind every statistic is a real person, a real story, and a real need for hope. In this episode of Words of Life, our Biblical Justice Roundtable takes an honest look at human trafficking, exploitation, modern slavery, and the work being done to prevent trafficking and support survivors. Joining the conversation are ministry leaders who have spent years working directly with vulnerable populations, survivor advocacy programs, anti-trafficking initiatives, and prevention efforts. Together, they explore what human trafficking actually is, common misconceptions about trafficking, how traffickers groom and exploit vulnerable individuals, and why trafficking often remains hidden in plain sight. The Human Stories Behind the Refugee Crisis
2026/07/08
What would it take for you to leave everything behind? In this episode of Words of Life, our Biblical Justice Roundtable turns its attention to refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced families. Through powerful personal stories and biblical reflection, Major Sandra Pawar helps us move beyond headlines and stereotypes to better understand the realities that force millions of people around the world to flee their homes. Wars, persecution, violence, religious oppression, and humanitarian crises have caused countless families to leave behind their communities, careers, possessions, and loved ones in search of safety. Yet refugees are often misunderstood, politicized, or reduced to statistics rather than seen as individuals made in the image of God. Can Christians Struggle with Mental Health?
2026/07/01
Mental health struggles affect people from every walk of life, including pastors, ministry leaders, and faithful followers of Christ. Yet many Christians still wrestle with the misconception that strong faith should eliminate emotional pain, anxiety, depression, trauma, or suffering. In this episode of Words of Life, our Biblical Justice Roundtable continues with an honest and hope-filled conversation about mental health, shame, vulnerability, counseling, and the vital role the Church can play in creating safe places for healing. Host Chris Benjamin is joined by Dr. Ian Mudge, Major Sandra Pawar, Hilary DeJarnett, and Sheena Evans as they explore why so many people hide their struggles, how shame thrives in isolation, and why healing often begins when we share our stories within trusted community.   DIAL 988 for the emotional crisis line The Salvation Army Pathway of HopePathway of Hope Freedom Collective Anti-human traffickingAnti-Human Trafficking Resources National Human Trafficking Hotline888-373-7888 Therapist Finder Recommended Reading: Biblical Justice The Good News About Injustice – Gary Haugen Generous Justice – Timothy Keller Poverty & Pathway of Hope Bridges Out of Poverty – Ruby K.
