The Bizarre Things Elizabethans Paid Magicians To Do
2026/10/06
What if your local pharmacist, therapist, astrologer and relationship counsellor were all the same person? In Elizabethan London, people dealing with illness, money worries, problems in love or uncertainty about their future could turn to a cunning folk practitioner for answers. These early modern magical practitioners offered a strange mixture of astrology, geomancy, herbal remedies, divination and experimental medicine — all designed to treat the body, mind and soul as one interconnected problem. In this episode of Macabre London, Nikki Druce explores the fascinating world of Simon Forman, one of Elizabethan London's most notorious and intriguing magical practitioners. Forman kept meticulous records of the people who came to him for help, giving us an extraordinary glimpse into how ordinary Londoners used magic in their everyday lives. From geomancy and astrology to herbal potions, purges and magical cures, we look at what people actually paid these practitioners to do — and whether their treatments were genuine attempts at healing, dangerous pseudoscience, or something in between. Nikki is joined by Dr Alexander Cummins an expert in the history of magic and geomancy, to explore how these practices worked and why magic was such an important part of everyday life in early modern England. 🖤 Subscribe to Macabre London for more dark history, strange stories and the occult history of London. The Exorcisms which resulted in being Hanged Drawn And Quartered whilst still alive!
2026/08/17
Religious paranoia had a alot to answer for in the early modern period. Within Queen Elizabeth the firsts royal court, whispers of unruly catholics harbouring demoniacs were starting to circulate, and her royal highness was not best pleased. A new priest was gathering support for catholicism in Denham in Buckinghamshire and a few stubborn villagers refused to convert from protestantism so he used something he had stashed in his back pocket as the most impressive way of showing his connections to god...exorcisms. People arrived in their hundreds to witness these mainly young women undergo many casting's out. These were fantastical events, the women would screm and growl, their eyes would turn black and they'd exhibit super strength breaking free of their restraints which tied them to heavy wooden chairs. But these highly attended events were not going unnoticed by the queens spies and when the priests took their show on the road to London, they strayed too close to the dragon...but would they get burned? Well, let's just say the fire spread and resulted in one of the worst executions London has ever seen... All that and more on this weeks episode. *Episodes are available in hosted video format on YouTube* - https://www.youtube.com/@MacabreLondon So if you're interested in magick, the occult, historical beliefs, witchcraft and just how the religion we know today was developed and forged in the old fires, with the occasional human sacrifice thrown in, then make sure you join me, this is just the beginning! The Woman Who Was Burned To Save A Duchess - Margery Jourdemayne - The Witch Of Eye
2026/07/16
Most people think that London escaped the witch trials but it did have one which was so high profile and gruesome, it may have stopped any other from occurring. In todays episode of Macabre London, we hear from returning guest and folklore expert - Dr Francis Young who tells us about the first recorded trial for witch craft and how things evolve over the ears to turn into the witch panic of the early modern period. We take a look at a royal scandal which resulted in many deaths to do with supposed witchcraft and how the punishments dished out were not equal for those involved. We learn how witchcraft was weaponised and how it became twisted and demonised by the church and how it became an offence punishable by death. Did the adoption of Christianity cause witchcraft to boom or was it a case of being used to get rid of marginalised peole in society with a dash of misogyny. How One Man Sentenced Hundreds of Women To Death - Matthew Hopkins: The Witchfinder General
2026/06/25
When Christianity arrived for the general masses in the late 1500's and Early 1600's, the puritan purge made life hell for a lot of people. As the civil war raged on, people took advantage and one of those people was Matthew Hopkins. He setn hundreds of people, mainly women to their deaths but before him, how did witchcraft become such a hotbed of political tension and how did religion stick it's beak into the ways people had been living for years but now paired it with the devil - a christian invention... In this episode of Macabre London, we uncover the roots of witchcraft accusations in England — from folk magic and protective charms to demonisation, law, religion, and the rise of the “witch” as a feared figure in the public imagination. We look at the key players who helped shape witch panic, including Henry VIII, James VI and I, Malleus Maleficarum, and Matthew Hopkins, and trace how fear turned into prosecution. If you’re into witches, medieval history, the early modern period, dark history, history documentaries, religion and belief, folklore, esotericism, and all things eerie and uncanny, this episode is for you. 2026/06/04
Have you ever wondered about the origins of May Day and why we get a day off on the bank holiday? Well, you can thank your randy ancestors who were all about getting drunk and hooking up on the first of May. As the cold of winter thawed, people emerged from their homes and were looking for other humans to socialise with. Over time, this turned into a celebration which spanned most of Europe. Beltane is a celtic fire festival which turned into May Day and it's been celebrated in London for centuries in many different incarnations. Learn all about the maypole and why it upset Christians and how it used to be ok to knock off with people without judgement, How tall was London's largest Maypole, what happened to it and how did these celebrations mutate into a huge 40ft Wicker Man fire festival a short way outside London in Hampshire...all that and more on today's episode. Boudicca Burns London - The Summoning of Goddess Andraste ft Dr Francis Young
2026/02/24
Did you know London was burned to the ground before it was even finished being built? Join me today for tales of Boudicca and her army gathered from the Iceni tribe. Boudicca was bullied and beaten by the invading Romans but she didn't back down. She got mad, got even and then took the advice of her gods to wreak fiery havoc on not one, not two, but three new Roman cities which she torched and burned to the ground. We hear from Dr Francis Young who explains about the Goddess Andraste and just how powerful and blood thirsty she may have been ( did she wear a serpent as a crown?) and we learn how the Romans nearly quit their invasion after being terrified by the wailing banshees of Mona (modern day Anglesey). So come and join us as we delve into ancient Britain and learn about the fiery vengeance of the pagans, druids and the celts. The first stops in this series are: How the druids came to beHow London became occupiedThe Romans are coming!Boudicca and the Iceni Tribe try to compromiseThe Romans attack Boudicca and her daughtersBoudicca gets mad, then gets evenThe fall of Camulodunum, Londinium & VeralamiumThe fall of Boudicca So if you're interested in magick, the occult, historical beliefs, witchcraft and just how the religion we know today was developed and forged in the old fires, with the occasional human sacrifice thrown in, then make sure you join me, this is just the beginning! The Secrets of Human Sacrifice in London - Belief & The Occult in London - EP 1
2026/02/17
Were the Celts a bloodthirsty, insatiable crowd of savages?... On the first episode of "Belief & The Occult in the Capital City", we take a look into just how London came to be. Was it a land of crazed celts who were hell bent on human sacrifice? Well if you listened to the Romans, they'd have you believe so! However, the truth was far more tame...was there bloodshed? Yes, but was it as bad as the slanderous Roman's made it out to be? Absolutely not. The first stops in this series are: What the occult is and how the word came to existHow London became occupiedWho did people worship and what did they do to appease their gods?Who were the Pagans, Druids, Celts and ancient mystic BritonsHoards and votive depositionHuman SacrificeThe Roman Invasion begins and what are the Briton's gonna do about it? One word...FIGHT! So if you're interested in magick, the occult, historical beliefs, witchcraft and just how the religion we know today was developed and forged in the old fires, with the occasional human sacrifice thrown in, then make sure you join me, this is just the beginning! How Magic Made London - From the Bronze Age to now - Introducing my new series about the OCCULT!
2026/02/10
If 2025 was the year of criminals for Macabre London then 2026 is the year of Magic! I'm so excited to be sharing my new series with you in this introduction episode. I'll be letting you in on my plans for this series, how I'll be exploring things and just what I'll be covering. I'll be taking things all the way back to the very beginnings of belief in London before it was even called London. Starting with an introduction to the occult and exactly what that means plus what you can expect in the first few episodes- spoiler alert, we'll be going over the first time London burned in the great fire that may have been caused by a goddess. But for the moment, I'm going to be introducing what this series is all about, how you can get involved and for the first time, welcoming experts to teach you AND me about these incredible esoteric worlds that we've yet to delve down. This will still be the Macabre London you know and love and I'll still be following real life stories which are linked to the occult. Expect tales of prehistoric beliefs, how London was made alongside the druids, Roman curses, medieval witch hunts, how London had a queen who was assisted by a magician, the search for gold, the science behind divination, how the tarot was formed, the Victorian obsession with psychics and psychedelics and how the Golden Dawn helped to bring about more new spiritual ideas in London than has possibly been seen ever since. We'll zoom into the astral realm of war time London and beyond into the occult resurgence of the 1970's then all the way up to the modern day and how Hackney may be a new spiritual portal! So if you're interested in the strange, then this series is for you! So if you're interested in magic, the occult, historical beliefs and just how the religion we know today was developed and forged in the old fires, with the occasional human sacrifice thrown in, then make sure you join me, this is just the beginning! ------------------------ If you love British true crime, unsolved mysteries, and historical murders, don’t miss this episode!
