Mo' Better Blues feat. Michael Lee Nirenberg
2026/08/17
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Shame List Picture Show. On this episode, I am joined by filmmaker, writer, and artist Michael Lee Nirenberg! Michael is joining us to promote his newest book, Cinematic Immunity: An Oral History of New York Filmmaking As Told by the Crews that Got the Shot, which was recently released by Feral House. It is a wonderful collection of interviews and essays from some of New York City's below-the-line film workers who helped build New York City's independent film culture.
On this episode, we're tackling a film that is on both Michael's Shame Lists—Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues. It's a beautiful film that features Spike Lee's signature view of the world, phenomenal performances, and music that will stick with you. We discuss New York City filmmaker, the influence of jazz, and some crazy stories from behind the scenes. This is a conversation you won't want to miss.

American Gigolo feat. Ryan Luis Rodriguez
2026/08/03
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Shame List Picture Show. On this episode, I am joined by podcaster Ryan Luis Rodriguez! Ryan is the host of the podcast One Track Mind, which is a podcast dedicated to the art of audio commentaries. On each episode, Ryan and a guest analyse the film and filmmaking based on what they've learned from a particular commentary track. It's a wonderful show, and I encourage everyone to check it out.
On this episode, we're scratching a movie off Michael's Shame List as we cover Paul Schrader's American Gigolo. It's a fantastic film that caught Michael off guard with its style and its influence on '80s film culture. We discuss Richard Gere's performance, Schrader's direction, the look, the style, and of course the iconic music. Whether you're a fan or finally crossing it off your own Shame List, it's a conversation you won't want to miss.

The Dirties feat. Josh Stifter
2026/07/20
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Shame List Picture Show. On this episode, I am joined by filmmaker Josh Stifter! Josh is the writer and director behind independent genre favorites including Greywood's Plot and The Good Exorcist. Many listeners may also know him from Robert Rodriguez's Rebel Without a Crew, where he documented the highs and lows of making a feature film under an incredibly tight deadline and budget.
This episode is a little different from our usual format. Rather than introducing Josh to a film that's been sitting on his Shame List, we're discussing one of his all-time favorites: Matt Johnson's The Dirties. It's a rare occasion where both Josh and Michael have seen the film going into the conversation, but it's also a movie that many listeners may have overlooked despite its critical acclaim and devoted following. Together, they explore what makes The Dirties such a singular achievement, from its inventive filmmaking and uncomfortable humor to its remarkably layered examination of bullying, and media. Whether you're a fan or finally crossing it off your own Shame List, it's a conversation you won't want to miss.
