Train and Seth return for the (as of now) only NSFW podcast in the Geekville Radio family. 0:30 – Introduction: It’s Halloween! Every October we adopt a Halloween theme for all our shows. Examining The Dead is a natural fit for Halloween. 2:00 – The Coroner’s Report Chucky premiered to critical praise. It has the distinction of being shown on two separate stations simultaneously, USA and Sci-Fi. Victor Miller vs. Sean Cunningham lawsuit over the Friday the 13th franchise Seems to finally be over. We covered the lawsuit resolution a few years back. https://www.geekvilleradio.com/19/ Halloween Kills finally opened and scored big at the box office even though it was readily available for streaming on Peacock as well. Unlike Marvel’s Black Widow, the home streaming ability didn’t seem to affect the box office performance. Venom: Let There Be Carnage has also opened to big success, currently sitting at $290 million worldwide. If there are people who think Venom isn’t horror, be reminded that in the comics one of Venom’s gimmicks was eating brains. Addams Family 2 has grossed $60m as well. Finally, Ghostbusters: Afterlife hits theaters in a couple of weeks. 25:45 – The Gruesome Twosome Threesome RL Stine’s Fear Street series of books were adapted into a trilogy of films: Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666. Unlike traditional movie trilogies which are released over years, these movies were released within weeks of each other. This effectively makes the movie feel much more like a three-part story than separate films. Beware that the review contains a whole bunch of SPOILERS but all three films are highly recommended! 25:00 – Into The Crystal Ball Body Horror according to Wikipedia is “a subgenre of horror that intentionally showcases grotesque or psychologically disturbing violations of the human body” Arguably the first example of body horror is the original Frankenstein novel by Mary Shelley. More modern examples include films by David Cronenberg such as Videodrome and The Fly. One of Train’s picks: The Fly (1986) perhaps the most mainstream example of body horror as a man slowly morphs into a giant insect. Seth’s Pick: Doctor Who and the Ark in Space, (1975) where a human slowly morphing into a giant insect is depicted using green bubble wrap…

Examining The Dead returns for the summer of 2021! Train and Seth talk about the release of A Quiet Place 2 and The Conjuring 3. Plus game news in Diablo II: Resurrected. The latter half of the show is devoted to the “found footage” genre of horror movies. Examining The Dead #29 2:20 – The Coroner’s Report * A Quiet Place Part II opened to a pandemic record-setting $50 million opening weekend. It was originally set for an opening in March of last year. It is now set for an Ultra-HD Blu-Ray release around Halloween.* The Conjuring 3 – The Devil Made Me Do It, the latest in a shared universe with The Nun, opened to a $24 million opening weekend. It is also available on HBO Max. * A Toxic Avenger Remake is in the works starring Kevin Bacon and Peter Dinklage* Halloween Kills is rescheduled for October 15th. It was originally set for release last year but was postpones cuz COVID.* Ned Beatty passes away* Resident Evil Village was released on May 7th to mostly positive reviews. Most of the criticisms were about how the game has gone more into an action/RPG style game as opposed to the puzzle-oriented style of the originals. Seth believes this may be due to a mix of trying to appeal to a broader demographic as well as more complex game engines that didn’t exist in the 1990s.* Blizzard Entertainment is releasing Diablo II: Resurrected this fall. It is a 20th Anniversary Remake of the game with a very eye-catching trailer. 32:25 – The Gruesome Twosome * The Blair Witch Project jumpstarted a genre of “found footage” horror stories when it was released in the summer of 1999. In those days, there were no Wikipedia or fact-checking sites to easily debunk whether something was real or not. In fact, many people were fooled into thinking the footage used in the film was legitimately lost footage. Fans pondered for years over what the ending of the film truly meant, even though the filmmakers intentionally left the ending to be ambiguous.* The Blackwell Ghost is a modern take on the genre. While the movie is not made of “found footage” it is filmed and edited like a self-made documentary. Since it was listed on Amazon as a documentary, people were easily drawn to believe it was legitimate filming of haunting when, like Blair Witch, it is a clever way to tell a ghost story on the cheap. It has since spawned four sequels. 58:40 – Into The Crystal Ball The “found footage” genre is actually nothing new. In fact, it could be argued that classic horror literature such as Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein and Bram Stoker’s Dracula which were written in the form of personal notes and journals were inspirations for modern media takes. Orson Welles’s famous radio take on War Of The Worlds fooled some people into thinking the world was under alien attack.

The backwater rural setting, the characters getting mysteriously stalked, and yes… “SQUEAL LIKE A PIG!” 1:01:30 – Wrong Turn (2003) The original Wrong Turn was a financial success. Each sequel had a measure of diminishing returns, but the first had some pretty creative deaths and camera shots. 1:20:25 – Into The Crystal Ball: Holiday Horror The Reverend Dan “The Dragon” Wilson returns to discuss Christmas-themed horror films, which date back as far as silent films in 1901! Geekville Radio Halloween Sampler It’s October, which means for many fellow geeks it’s Halloween Season! We love Halloween here at Geekville Radio and have a slew of special shows and programming in store for you in the coming weeks. Examining The Dead, our Horror-themed podcast will review two Western films with horror elements. First up, the original Westworld with the iconic performance by Yul Brynner as The Gunman. Next up, the more recent Kurt Russell film Bone Tomahawk. And if you haven’t seen it, it is NOT for the squeamish. Finally, we’ll talk about horror characters and where they might stand on the classic D&D Alignment descriptions. Over on The Lesser Known Geek Hall Of Fame, we are inducting the first movie studio, Amicus Productions. They have made many a horror film over the years, to the p[oint where some titles got mistaken for the much better-known Hammer Films company. Whovians may recognize Amicus as the company that produced the two Peter Cushing Dr. Who feature films in the mid-1960s. In our Classic Wrestling Memories podcast, we will review the oft-referenced WCW Halloween Havoc from 1991. While it actually had a pretty good main event with then WCW World Champion defending the title against Ron Simmons, it is perhaps best-known for having the laughable opening match called “The Chamber Of Horrors Match”. That match ended with the “electrocution” of Abdullah The Butcher. Future Hall Of Famers Sting, Mick Foley, and Scott Hall were also part of the match. Meanwhile, for Geekville Radio’s Nostalgia Trip, we will be looking at the classic 1960s TV Sitcom The Munsters. On this very website, we will provide one trailer a day for all 31 days of October. For our Doctor Who commentary podcast, Examining The Doctor, we will take a look at the Patrick Troughton story The Macra Terror, which sees giant crabs wreaking havoc on an otherwise peaceful city. As the name implies, it’s an entry in the “Killer Car” genre. The film is currently streaming on Netflix. 1:00:10 – Maximum Overdrive (1987) – The only film to be directed by Stephen King. Much like The Car, it has to do with evil machines. This time, mainly trucks and computer devices. 1:22:30 – Into The Crystal Ball The Reverend Dan Wilson returns to talk about the Chatanooga Film Festival. (2:48) The Coroner’s Report (3:35) Helstrom, the latest Marvel series, has begun filming. It is set for release sometime in 2020. Who is Helstrom and what could the series be like? With Marvel Studios taking over all TV projects, this could conceivably mean interaction with the rest of the MCU. Blade anybody? (17:15) United Artists has released another Addams Family feature film. However, unlike the previous films, it is not an adaption of the classic 60s TV show. This incarnation is inspired by the original comics from creator Charles Addams that predate the series by a few decades. (23:25) Shudder has released a TV series based on the 1982 film Creepshow. It will stick with the anthology format of the film, which means several unrelated stories rather than one ongoing one. (29:25) Castlerock Season 2 from Stephen King is coming to Hulu. (34:00) American Horror Story has entered its ninth season. Well it’s been a long few months, but Examining The Dead is back just in time for Halloween. We do apologize for not releasing any shows in the last six months, but it should be smooth sailing from here The Coroner’s Report Friday The 13th Video Game Lawsuit Resolution The big news for horror gamers is the ruling in the Friday The 13th Video Game lawsuit has been handed down. Victor Miller has won his lawsuit against Horror Inc. and Sean Cunningham over rights to the franchise name. As such, Gun Media will no longer allowed to market the hit Friday The 13th video game with certain likenesses or characters. It is worth mentioning that Gun Media may still be allowed to use the classic “Hockey Mask Jason” look, as that was developed in the movies Miller did not help make. Seth roughly equates it to a Superman lawsuit from a few years back where the estates of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were allowed to maintain ownership and licensing to the original take on Superman from the 1930’s. However, DC will still keep rights to Superman as we know him today. Gun Media released this statement to Bloody Disgusting after the verdict was announced. “We are disappointed in the court’s ruling and disagree with its conclusion. We are considering our options, including an appeal. We understand that this ruling has created confusion among some fans of the franchise and, more specifically, “Friday the 13th: The Game” players who have questions about new Friday the 13th content in the game. The court was very clear that its ruling in favor of Mr. Miller is limited to the original screenplay in which Jason’s mother is the killer and that Mr. Miller’s termination notice did not purport to terminate Horror, Inc.’s separate copyright in the iconic supernatural killer who wears a hockey mask. While the ruling does not prevent Gun from continuing to sell and operate the existing game, it may complicate adding certain content to the current game in the future. Some have asked if a settlement could be reached with Victor Miller to enable the creation of new content. Even if Gun were in a position to continue to fund the game while it was waiting for such questions to be resolved, there is no evidence to date that such a settlement is possible. Friday the 13th director Sean Cunningham has previously reached out directly to Victor Miller to discuss a settlement. Miller responded by refusing to talk to Sean. Work on new content for fans was suspended because of the position that Miller has taken. Given Miller’s unwillingness to discuss settlement to date and following the guidelines set down by the Court’s ruling, Horror Inc. intends to aggressively explore many opportunities for new projects featuring settings and characters not included in Mr. Miller’s screenplay. Horror, Inc. will be providing additional details on the new Friday the 13th projects in the near future.” There may be more to come with this story, but neither Train nor Seth rule out the possibility of this being the beginning of the end. In movie news, we are only a few weeks away from the highly anticipated movie Halloween. This is, of course, another retelling that ignores all movies in the franchise except the original 1978 classic.
