Stop Pushing So Hard. Why Dahlin and Kucherov Never Go Full Speed | The Train 2.0 Show
2026/10/11
Daniel Broberg has spent two summers on the ice with Rasmus Dahlin, and the first thing he will tell you is that the best skaters in the world almost never go full speed.
In this episode Kevin McKinnon, Train 2.0's Director of Coaching, sits down with Daniel Broberg, the Swedish skills coach behind DB Hockey Factory, to get into the philosophy he sums up as find the balance, find the glide, smooth power: the one body part he cues before anything else and why it fixes the hip, knee and foot angle on its own, the reason 97% of his drills keep the puck on the stick, what happens to strong 15 and 16 year olds the moment they start pushing too hard, why he tells Jesper Bratt the same thing day after day every summer, and a take on Nathan MacKinnon that most Canadian coaches will not love.
Watch the full episode for the posture cue, the Bratt turn Kevin shows his own players, and why the ice never gets any bigger.

The Downhill Skating System is the mechanics-first approach that unlocks effortless, controlled speed on the ice without extra conditioning, pushing or "trying harder." Inspired by the movement signatures of players like Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes, and other elite NHL skaters, this system teaches you how to move on the ice with gravity, using your body's own stretch shortening cycles mixed with the most efficient footwork patterns and various skating mechanics.
Most players skate "uphill": stiff, blocky, pushing hard, creating tension and burning energy like we were always taught in traditional power skating. Downhill skating flips that model. By using counter rotation, proper joint angles, and natural gravitational momentum, we teach you to move faster with less effort.
Inside Train 2.0+ you'll learn to:
1) Unlock the inner spring for better acceleration.
2) Use direction changes that keep you deceptive and hold your optionality.
3) Build NHL superstar mechanics, instead of repatterning the wrong movements.
4) Turn these mechanics into in game assets, completely changing your player DNA and development trajectories.

Starting Hockey at 17, How to Explode Your Development | The Train 2.0 Show
2026/09/22
Starting Hockey at 17 | The Train 2.0 ShowIf you measure how long NHL players actually spend in their forward stride during a shift, it's around 10% of their ice time. Yet most hockey camps and skill development programs spend 50% of every session drilling stride mechanics in a straight line. That math alone explains a huge chunk of why traditional power skating drills don't translate to a real game.In this episode of the Train 2.0 Show, Kevin McKinnon sits down with Colton Keller, a Buffalo coach who picked up hockey late in his teens and used Train 2.0 to accelerate his own development before founding Train 2.0 Buffalo. They get into the specific skills the modern NHL is built on that almost nobody is training, the drills players are still wasting ice time on, and what the next generation development model should actually look like.
Stop Copying McDavid's Workout. Do This Instead. | The Train 2.0 Show
2026/09/15
Most hockey players build their summer around a program they saw an NHL player post, and then wonder why they show up to camp slower, tighter, or hurt.
In this episode Kevin McKinnon, Train 2.0's Director of Coaching, sits down in person with Mason Hackel, a certified Train 2.0 coach and level three ATG coach out of Ann Arbor, to talk about the training philosophy he used to fix his own hips and what it looks like when you build it for a hockey player.
They get into the three lifts Mason builds every program around and the exact bodyweight standard he works players toward, the reason so many players tear an Achilles in the offseason and never see it coming, what to do about knee pain and hip pain before you touch anything explosive, the off-ice work that widens your corkscrew, one number in the gym that tracks directly with skating speed, and the order Kevin periodizes a summer so you peak at training camp instead of in July.
Watch the full episode for the standards, the demos, and the plan.

Inside the Downhill Skating System, players learn to:1) Unlock the inner spring for better acceleration.2)Use different footwork patterns to add options, deception and effortlessness. 3)Proper joint alignment for efficiency and balance instead of creating tension with push strides.Apply NHL-base mechanics like shin angle, Y-angle, rhythm and cadence. Generate speed using the rocker, with heel pressure and subtle weight transfers.
This system is not what players would learn in traditional, outdated power skating methods. It’s a biomechanics-based operating system designed to match your body type and natural movement patterns.
Whether you’re trying to improve the forward stride, lateral movements, deception, or posture, Downhill Skating reveals the hidden mechanics the NHL’s best rely on, and shows you how to plug them into your game step by step.If you’re ready to skate faster with less effort, flow through transitions, and move with the smoothness of the world’s best players, the Downhill Skating System is your blueprint to faster player development.

Why Players Work Harder But Don’t Get Faster | Train 2.0 Coaches Roundtable
2026/02/11
👉 Check out the Train 2.0+ Coaches Certification here:https://train2point0.com/coaches/#
In this episode of the Train 2.0 Show, we sit down with certified Train 2.0 coach Asha Kennedy to break down the questions coaches and players are constantly asking about speed, skill transfer, and real performance development.
We dive into why so many players train harder every year but still struggle to get faster, and why mechanics (not effort) are often the missing piece. From fundamental movement quality to mechanical advantage on the ice, this conversation explains why elite players often look effortless while still being among the fastest athletes in the game.
We also explore why some players dominate drills but struggle to translate those skills into games. Using motor learning principles, we explain how skills must move from conscious control into automatic execution, and why internal dialogue, pressure, and distractions can all interfere with performance under game stress.
Another major topic is the mechanics most players skip early in development that limit them years later. We discuss outside edge control, ankle articulation, and Y-angle and why these are foundational for deception, balance, and speed at higher levels of play.
Finally, we talk about why elite skaters seem to “feel the ice” differently, and how mechanical advantage, edge control, and efficient movement patterns create the smooth, effortless look that separates top players from the rest.
Train 2.0 is built on a mechanics-first approach, using video analysis, biomechanics, and reverse engineering of elite NHL movement patterns to help players and coaches accelerate development and close the gap between traditional training and modern performance science.

Do tactics or mechanics lead to better player development? Jack Han and Jason Yee discuss
2024/07/05
In this conversation, Jason Yee and Jack Han discuss their perspectives on hockey development and player improvement. They explore the importance of mechanics, tactics, mindset, and holistic development. They also touch on the challenges of player development within the constraints of time and resources. The conversation highlights the need for intention and focus when studying the game and the importance of finding the root causes of performance issues. They also discuss the concept of chi and how mechanics can contribute to the flow of energy in a player's game.
Takeaways
Mechanics play a crucial role in player development, but they are not the only factor. Other aspects such as tactics, mindset, and holistic development are equally important.
Finding the root causes of performance issues is essential for effective player development. It requires a deep understanding of the game and the ability to identify the areas that need improvement.
Having intention and focus when studying the game is crucial. Eliminating distractions and analyzing specific aspects of play can lead to valuable insights and improvements.
Player development is a complex process that requires patience and a long-term perspective. It is important to understand that progress may not always be linear and that different players have different developmental timelines.
The concept of chi, or life force, can be applied to hockey mechanics. Optimal mechanics allow for the smooth flow of energy and maximize a player's performance.
Open discourse and collaboration between coaches and players can lead to new insights and advancements in hockey development.
The 80/20 rule applies to player improvement. Focusing on specific areas of improvement that have the greatest impact can lead to significant overall progress.
Coaches and parents should consider the psychosocial and performance factors that influence player development. Creating a supportive and trusting environment is essential for players to take risks and grow.
Deep work and focused study are necessary for effective player development. Eliminating distractions and investing time and effort into analyzing the game can lead to valuable discoveries and improvements.
