Brad Hargis | Marriage and Money - Part 2
2026/10/17
In today’s episode of The BCC Podcast, Kevin Carson, Executive Director of the Biblical Counseling Coalition, continues his conversation with pastor and biblical counselor Brad Hargis about money and marriage. After considering the heart issues behind financial stewardship in Part 1, Kevin and Brad turn to an essential biblical response to the love of money: contentment. In this conversation, Kevin and Brad draw from 1 Timothy 6 to consider what Scripture calls true gain. Rather than finding security or satisfaction in accumulating more, believers are called to pursue “godliness with contentment.” They discuss how comparison can quietly fuel covetousness and discontentment, causing things God has already provided to suddenly seem inadequate, and how learning to live within the means God provides can bring greater peace and freedom to a marriage. Kevin and Brad also consider Paul’s instructions to those who are rich. Scripture does not condemn wealth itself, but it does warn against placing our hope in uncertain riches. Instead, believers are called to hope in God, enjoy His provision, do good, be rich in good works, and be generous and ready to share. They also discuss the wisdom of slowing down financial decisions and allowing time and God’s providence to clarify whether a purchase is truly needed. Whether you are navigating financial decisions in your own marriage, counseling others through money-related struggles, or simply seeking to grow in contentment, this conversation will encourage you to evaluate where your hope is placed. Genuine contentment is ultimately rooted in Christ and enables us to faithfully enjoy, steward, and generously use whatever God has entrusted to us for His glory.   FROM OUR SPONSOR:  To learn more about an undergraduate degree in biblical counseling, go to BoyceCollege.com/1514. Brad Hargis | Marriage and Money - Part 1
2026/10/10
In today’s episode of The BCC Podcast, Kevin Carson, Executive Director of the Biblical Counseling Coalition, is joined by pastor and biblical counselor Brad Hargis for the first of a two-part conversation on money and marriage. Together, they consider how financial struggles in marriage are often about far more than budgets, spending, or debt—they reveal what is happening in the heart. In this conversation, Kevin and Brad discuss how Scripture helps us think about money as a matter of worship and stewardship. Drawing especially from 1 Timothy 6, they explore how money can become a source of security, comfort, reputation, power, or hope, and how our spending patterns can reveal what we value, pursue, trust, and love. While practical financial tools are important, Brad emphasizes that biblical counsel must go beyond managing numbers to addressing the desires and priorities of the heart. Kevin and Brad also consider the practical implications of financial stewardship within marriage, including financial honesty, hidden debt, separate accounts, trust, and the importance of husbands and wives working together. They discuss how the one-flesh nature of marriage should shape the way couples think about money—not primarily as “mine” and “yours,” but as something God has entrusted to them to steward together. Whether you are counseling a couple in financial conflict, working through money decisions in your own marriage, or simply seeking to grow in faithful stewardship, this conversation will encourage you to look beyond the question, “Where is our money going?” and consider what the way we use money reveals about our hearts and how we can steward it together in a way that honors Christ.   FROM OUR SPONSOR:  To learn more about an undergraduate degree in biblical counseling, go to BoyceCollege.com/1514. Kyle Gangel
2026/09/19
In today’s episode of The BCC Podcast, Kevin Carson, Executive Director of the Biblical Counseling Coalition, is joined by Kyle Gangel, lead pastor of Southern Hills Bible Church in Custer, South Dakota. Kyle serves as both a pastor and biblical counselor and joins Kevin to consider five characteristics of a local church where biblical counseling can naturally grow and flourish. In this conversation, Kevin and Kyle discuss what it looks like to cultivate a church culture that is Christ-centered, pastorally led, committed to one-another ministry, committed to meaningful church membership, and dependent upon Christ for genuine spiritual change. Rather than focusing on developing a formal counseling program or center, they consider how biblical counseling grows out of the ordinary life and ministry of a healthy local church, where pastors model and equip God’s people to faithfully minister His Word to one another. Kevin and Kyle also address what pastors and church members can do when their church does not yet reflect these characteristics. Pastors can begin by examining their own ministry, faithfully preaching God’s Word, modeling one-another ministry, and equipping God’s people for the work of ministry. Church members can begin right where God has placed them—loving, encouraging, serving, and faithfully ministering the Word to those around them. Whether you are a pastor, biblical counselor, or church member, this conversation will encourage you to consider your own role in cultivating a church where biblical counseling thrives—not simply as a ministry that is added to the church, but as a natural expression of a body of believers centered on Christ, committed to one another, and trusting Him to bring lasting change through His Word and His people.   FROM OUR SPONSOR:  To learn more about an undergraduate degree in biblical counseling, go to BoyceCollege.com/1514. Josh Matthews: Stubborn Sins
2026/09/12
In today’s episode of The BCC Podcast, Kevin Carson, Executive Director of the Biblical Counseling Coalition, is joined by pastor and biblical counselor Josh Matthews for a candid conversation about stubborn sins—patterns believers may confess and fight, yet still find themselves struggling with again. Josh shares personally from his own ongoing battle with food, comfort, and self-control. Kevin and Josh begin in Romans 6, exploring the believer’s union with Christ and the hope it provides in the fight against sin. Lasting change is not ultimately found in greater willpower, stricter rules, or better systems, but in knowing and believing what God says is true of us in Christ: we have died with Him, been raised with Him, and sin no longer has the right to rule over us. They also discuss genuine repentance, the call to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” while making no provision for the flesh, and the limitations of external rules and self-discipline. While practical strategies can be helpful, they cannot substitute for the heart change that comes through Christ. Ultimately, the goal is not simply to stop a sinful behavior, but to grow in our love for Christ so that our affection for Him increasingly surpasses the comfort, pleasure, or satisfaction sin promises. As believers grow in knowing and treasuring Christ, they learn not only to say no to sin, but to pursue Someone far better.   FROM OUR SPONSOR:  To learn more about an undergraduate degree in biblical counseling, go to BoyceCollege.com/1514. Jeff Piatt | Lakeside Bible Church
2026/09/05
In today’s episode of The BCC Podcast, Kevin Carson, Executive Director of the Biblical Counseling Coalition, is joined by Jeff Piatt, pastor of Lakeside Bible Church in Mobridge, South Dakota. Jeff has served in pastoral ministry in this rural community for more than twenty years, faithfully seeking to equip his church to minister God’s Word to those who are hurting and struggling. In this conversation, we’ll hear how a commitment to the sufficiency of Scripture has shaped Jeff’s pastoral ministry, his church, and their approach to helping people. Jeff shares how growing counseling needs led Lakeside to intentionally equip church members to come alongside one another and how biblical counseling increasingly moved beyond formal appointments into everyday relationships and conversations throughout the community. Kevin and Jeff also discuss the unique opportunities and challenges of rural ministry, including bivocational ministry, pastoral discouragement, the temptation to withdraw or measure ministry by visible results, and the importance of examining one’s own heart while remaining faithful to the work God has given. They also consider how equipping church members to counsel one another can strengthen the entire church while actually reducing, rather than increasing, a pastor’s counseling load. Whether you serve in a rural community, a small church, or a large metropolitan area, this conversation will encourage you to consider how ordinary believers can be equipped to notice those around them, listen well, love them faithfully, and help them apply the wisdom and hope of God’s Word to everyday life. Kevin and Ernie discuss the historic role of The Master’s University in the biblical counseling movement and the exciting developments taking place within its graduate program. Together, they highlight the importance of equipping counselors who are grounded in God’s Word and prepared to serve both the local church and the global mission of Christ. The conversation also explores the work of Biblical Counseling Ministries Worldwide, which trains pastors and church leaders in more than 60 countries while providing counseling resources and theological education around the globe. Ernie explains how the partnership between BCMW and The Master’s University seeks to identify and equip faithful leaders who can return to their own nations to strengthen churches through biblical counseling and discipleship. Rooted in Romans 11:33–36, Ernie closes the conversation by reflecting on the beautiful truth that all things are from God, through God, and to God. Whether in counseling, ministry, education, or everyday life, believers are reminded that Christ is both the source and the goal of all they do, calling His people to live for His glory alone.   FROM OUR SPONSOR:  To learn more about an undergraduate degree in biblical counseling, go to BoyceCollege.com/1514. Drawing from the influence of the late David Powlison and longtime CCEF faculty such as Ed Welch, the conversation highlights the importance of patient, church-centered ministry that walks with people through suffering and sanctification over time. Additionally, they discuss the opportunities and challenges facing biblical counseling organizations today, the need for accessible training for pastors and church members, and the growing global impact of biblical counseling ministry. In this conversation, Kevin and Dave discuss 2 Timothy 2:2 and 1 Timothy 4:16, exploring the responsibility of entrusting the truth of the gospel to the next generation while maintaining personal faithfulness in both life and doctrine. Dave highlights how this pattern of generational discipleship serves as a safeguard against theological drift, emphasizing the importance of carefully transmitting the “treasure” of Scripture to faithful individuals who will continue the work. They also address the critical connection between knowing and living the truth, warning against the danger of unapplied theology. Rooted in the call to “watch your life and doctrine closely” (1 Tim. 4:16) and to entrust the truth to faithful people (2 Tim. 2:2), this conversation encourages pastors and counselors to remain students of God’s Word, to apply it personally, and to faithfully pass it on as a precious and life-giving treasure.   FROM OUR SPONSOR:  To learn more about an undergraduate degree in biblical counseling, go to BoyceCollege.com/1514.
