88: Putting the Fun Back Into Vet Med with Dr Greg Bishop
2026/09/29
Veterinary medicine is serious work. But does that mean we have to be so bloody serious while we’re doing it? My guest today is Dr Greg Bishop, a practising veterinarian, cartoonist, author, illustrator and speaker based in Portland, Oregon. Through Sasquatch Paw, Greg combines veterinary medicine, humour, science communication and visual storytelling to explore the absurd, emotional and deeply human parts of caring for animals. He’s also the author of the forthcoming Science Comics: Veterinary Science. And beneath the cartoons, jokes and what Greg calls his “professional zoomies” sits a serious idea: fun matters. In this conversation, we explore why humour and play aren’t distractions from good veterinary medicine. They can help us cope with difficult moments, communicate better, build trust and perhaps stay connected to the reasons we came into this profession in the first place. We talk frankly about burnout and Greg’s own relationship with work, before getting into gallows humour, the science of laughter and the surprisingly powerful role comedy can play in the consult room, even during some of the hardest conversations we have with clients. We also explore clinical communication, creativity, AI, our increasingly digital lives, and the danger of becoming so obsessed with efficiency that all we do with the time we save is cram more work into it. Greg’s argument for slowing down, paying attention and trusting the art alongside the science is a timely one. This is funny, occasionally ridiculous, surprisingly moving and, ultimately, a reminder that fun is not frivolous. In a profession that asks so much of us, humour, creativity and play can help us stay connected, stay curious and keep enjoying the work. If we want veterinary medicine to be sustainable, perhaps putting some of the fun back into it is more important than we think. 87: Trust Is Everything: Leadership, Systems, and the Future of Veterinary Medicine with Dr. Peter Weinstein
2026/05/06
The keen-eared among you will recognize this voice. And yes - you’d be right. This is ever-wisening Dr Peter Weinstein. (Yes, we meant Wisening, not wizening however much we were tempted by the latter.) Peter is one of those rare figures in veterinary medicine who has seen the profession from every angle. From kennel kid at 15 to practice owner, from board-level leadership to educator, from clinician to one of the clearest thinkers on the business and structure of veterinary medicine today. But what makes this conversation different is timing. Because this isn’t a comfortable moment for our profession. Costs are rising. Clients are pushing back. Teams are stretched. Transactions are falling while prices climb. And underneath it all, something more fundamental is shifting. Trust. In this episode, Peter and I sit down face-to-face to unpack what’s really happening in veterinary medicine right now. We talk about the economic pressure building beneath the surface, the unintended consequences of rapid growth and consolidation, and why the profession feels… wobbly. We explore why leadership, not hustle, is the answer. Why systems matter more than individuals. Why communication is the missing skill in most practices. And why, if we don’t rebuild trust deliberately, we risk losing the very foundation this profession was built on. This episode is reflective, challenging, and ultimately optimistic. Because if we get this right, the future of veterinary medicine doesn’t just survive - it becomes stronger than ever. Episode Highlights[00:02:00] Meet Dr Peter Weinstein [00:12:00] Reacting vs responding under pressure [00:14:00] Are we in a veterinary recession? [00:17:00] Fewer clients, higher prices - the real maths [00:19:00] “Trust is the word of 2026” [00:23:00] The pandemic boom that broke the system [00:28:00] What happens when the leader leaves [00:31:00] Why leadership is the real problem [00:34:00] Systems vs people - what actually holds a practice up [00:43:00] The hidden cost of care problem [00:49:00] Why clients don’t understand us [00:52:00] Gold standard vs real-world care [01:00:00] Why communication beats clinical skill [01:06:00] “This is how we’ve always done it” [01:08:00] Why the future is still optimistic Episode LinksThe E-Myth Veterinarian – Dr Peter WeinsteinWestern University of Health Sciences (College of Veterinary Medicine)James Herriot Museum, ThirskToday’s Veterinary Business: My Daughter, the Veterinary Student by Dr. Peter Weinstein Connect with Dr Peter WeinsteinLinkedIn: Dr Peter WeinsteinVeterinary business and leadership education (Western University) Why does leading your practice feel harder than it should? 86: The Lab Is the Engine: Lessons from Dr. Fred Metzger on Practice, Profit, and Doing the Right Thing
2026/03/30
Dr. Fred Metzger is not your typical veterinary speaker. He grew up in a converted church, stocked his swimming pool with fish, and once came home to find his family had bought a cougar kitten. So yes… unorthodox is probably the right word. But behind the stories is something far more important. Dr. Fred Metzger has spent more than 30 years in the profession, built a 13-doctor hospital from scratch, and stayed when many others would have walked away. He’s seen the best of veterinary medicine - and some of the worst. And he’s not shy about saying what needs to be said. In this episode, we go deep. We talk about mentorship, consolidation, culture, and why so many good vets are quietly burning out or leaving altogether. We get into the tension between corporate systems and real-world practice - and what gets lost when leadership forgets to listen. But most of all, we talk about something deceptively simple that could change how you practise tomorrow: The lab. Dr. Fred Metzger makes the case - passionately and convincingly - that diagnostic thinking is the most underused superpower in veterinary medicine. Not as a money-making tool. But as the engine of better decisions, better medicine, and better conversations with clients. That belief has now turned into something tangible. Dr. Fred Metzger has partnered with Purdue University to launch a new clinical pathology programme - built to help vets actually understand and use the lab, not just run tests and hope for the best. You can read more about that here. There’s humour in this one. There’s a bit of fire too. And if you’re willing to reflect on your own practice, there’s a lot to take away. Episode Highlights[00:02:00] Meet Dr. Fred Metzger [00:07:00] The mentorship article that hit a nerve [00:13:00] “You’ll never be a vet” moment [00:19:00] Growing up differently [00:31:00] What success actually means [00:39:00] The mentorship gap in vet med [00:41:00] Where consolidation goes wrong [00:51:00] The lab as your superpower [01:00:00] Show the “broken car part” [01:05:00] What really drives a practice [01:15:00] Would you do it on your dog? [01:22:00] Why mastering the lab matters [01:53:00] Why we overcomplicate care Episode Links & ResourcesLaboratory Retrievers (Dr. Fred Metzger’s clinical pathology course)Purdue x Laboratory Retrievers Programme LaunchConnect with Dr. Fred Metzger on LinkedIn Want more leadership tools and straight-talking conversations?Follow me: @drdavenicol Dr. Dave Nicol’s Practice Reflection Tool The 10-minute Practice Reflection helps you see what’s creating pressure in your practice - and get clear next steps to make it easier to lead. 85: Clients, Colleagues, and Chaos: A Survival Guide with Debra Vey Voda-Hamilton
2025/06/24
Debra’s story is wild. She’s worked in the courts. She’s bred Irish Setters. She’s been the PTA president (which, as she says, is like running the UN with biscuits). But what makes her special is her ability to meet people in the thick of their mess, whether it's a lawsuit over a pregnant rescue dog or a front-desk blowup, and find the gold. In this episode, I sit down with Debra Vey Voda-Hamilton, a former litigator turned mediator turned conflict resolution master. And trust me, if you’ve ever had a client, colleague, or complaint that made you question your career, this conversation is for you. We talk about ego, emotional intelligence, and why boundary-setting isn't just about saying “no.” We unpack the tiny shifts in language that can turn an explosive moment into something manageable. And we dig into a story from my early days that still sits with me, a story about a cat, a fractured jaw, and a moral gut-punch I’ll never forget. This episode is practical, honest, and (if you’re brave enough to look in the mirror) potentially career-changing. Debra brings the kind of wisdom we need more of in vet med: compassionate, clear, and totally unafraid of the hard stuff. Ep 84: Fluency, Failure & Feeling Alive with my coach, Mike Porteous
2025/05/21
In this episode, I’m joined by the remarkable Mike Porteous, a triathlon coach, open-water swimmer, and deep thinker whose approach to performance, confidence, and coaching is anything but ordinary. Mike is a Level 3 Triathlon Coach, British Triathlon mentor, and the founder of Zig Zag Alive. His career spans decades, starting in academia and the UK civil service before pivoting into endurance sport coaching. He’s worked with athletes of all levels, from first-timers to elite competitors, and is passionate about fostering “confidence-centered coaching,” a method rooted not in data or drills, but in presence, ease, and self-trust. He’s also coaching me through my triathlon journey and many of his ideas and methods could, I believe, be highly useful to us inside veterinary medicine as we navigate our own challenges. We dive into Mike’s journey from working in Brazilian economics and UK industrial policy to launching an outdoor sports business, and eventually finding his home in helping others find their flow. A Swim England instructor and writer for the Outdoor Swimming Society, Mike combines intellectual insight with lived experience, including the healing power of endurance sport after personal loss. From redefining resilience and flow to explaining why confidence doesn’t “exist” in the way we think it does, Mike’s perspective is a refreshing and deeply humane take on success and coaching, both inside and outside sport. So whether you're a veterinary leader looking to inspire your team, an athlete seeking sustainable growth, or simply someone navigating your next life chapter, this conversation will leave you with more than a few moments to ponder. Pour a coffee or step outside for a walk, this one’s rich, reflective, and full of gentle, powerful wisdom. Episode Highlights[00:01:00] What Is Confidence-Centered Coaching? In this episode, I’m joined by a truly impactful voice in veterinary medicine—Dr. Bob Lester. If you’ve ever wondered how to build something big without losing the soul of the work… Bob’s your guy. A veterinarian, entrepreneur, and systems thinker, Bob’s career spans small-town mixed animal practice, the founding of Banfield Pet Hospitals, academic leadership at Lincoln Memorial University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and now, his role as co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of WellHaven Pet Health—a company that’s quietly redefining what good corporate veterinary care can look like. Ep 82: Just Keep Swimming with Dr. Paula Yankauskas
2025/03/25
In this episode, I’m joined by an absolute powerhouse of a human being—Dr. Paula Yankauskas. A veterinarian, practice owner, and open-water swimming legend, Paula’s story is one of resilience, passion, and pushing the limits of what’s possible. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Paula has spent decades building and leading Lamoille Valley Veterinary Services, a thriving seven-doctor practice in rural Vermont. But as impressive as her veterinary career is, it’s her other life in the water that truly sets her apart. Paula is one of a select few athletes to have completed the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming—a gruelling trifecta of the English Channel, the Catalina Channel, and the 20 Bridges Swim around Manhattan. Not stopping there, she went on to achieve the Frosted Triple Crown, which adds the mind-boggling challenge of an Ice Mile—swimming a full mile in water below 5°C (41°F). From the discipline and endurance required to swim across the world’s toughest waters to the lessons of leadership, resilience, and goal-setting that she applies in veterinary medicine, Paula’s story is nothing short of extraordinary. We discuss how she balances her veterinary career with extreme endurance challenges, the mindset that allows her to push past discomfort, and the power of simply "just keep swimming." Whether you’re looking for inspiration in your own career, curious about open-water swimming, or just love hearing stories about people who redefine what’s possible, this episode is one you don’t want to miss. Ep 79: Courage Under Fire: Rescuing Animals and People in Crisis with Pen Farthing
2024/12/11
Today’s guest is nothing short of extraordinary. His story is one of courage, compassion, and an unshakable sense of purpose. Meet Pen Farthing—a former Royal Marine Commando who took an unexpected turn to become an animal welfare champion and founder of the Nowzad Charity. It all started with a stray dog Pen befriended during his time in Afghanistan, a bond that sparked the creation of the country’s first-ever animal rescue center. But this wasn’t just about saving animals—Pen’s mission empowered communities, employing Afghanistan’s first female veterinarians and running crucial rabies vaccination programs that saved both human and animal lives in regions desperate for such intervention. Fast forward to 2021, when the world watched the chaotic withdrawal of coalition forces from Afghanistan and the Taliban’s rapid takeover of Kabul. Amid this turmoil, Pen spearheaded the now-famous Operation Ark. It was a mission fraught with danger and resistance, from navigating the deadly threat of the Taliban to overcoming relentless bureaucratic hurdles, political pressure, and a hostile media storm back in the UK. Headlines screamed accusations of 'prioritizing pets over people,' but the reality was far more complex. Pen’s focus was on rescuing his entire team alongside the animals, blending humanity with heroism in the darkest of circumstances. The gripping story of Operation Ark is captured in Pen’s book, Operation Ark: The Tale of Courage and Compassion in Afghanistan’s Darkest Hour. Today, we’ll dive into what it really means to lead with integrity when the stakes couldn’t be higher, explore the personal cost of standing by your values, and learn what’s next for this remarkable individual. So, make yourself a brew, settle in, and enjoy this powerful conversation with the one-and-only, Pen Farthing. Ep 78: Grit, Mountains, and Medicine: Inside the Mind of Trailblazer Dr. Jasmin Paris
2024/11/11
On today’s show, I’m thrilled to welcome Dr. Jasmin Paris—a true powerhouse in the worlds of veterinary medicine and ultra-running.  Jasmin’s got a serious academic pedigree: Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Veterinary Science, PhD, and membership in the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Jasmin is a leading expert in small animal medicine, but honestly, it’s her jaw-dropping athletic feats that leave most of us in awe. Jasmin is one of the most accomplished female ultra runners, particularly in Fell Running, on the planet. Just this March, she made history as the first woman ever to complete the brutal Barkley Marathons in Tennessee, a 100-mile monster with a 60-hour cutoff that only 20 people have ever conquered in its 38-year run. And that’s not all—back in 2019, Jasmin won the Montane Spine Race, a 268-mile winter ultramarathon across England’s Pennine Way, breaking the record by over 12 hours, all while expressing breast milk and caring for her 14-month-old daughter. She’s also crushed records in the 2016 British Fell Running Championship and the Bob Graham Round, blazing through that gruelling 66-mile challenge in an incredible 15 hours and 24 minutes. From her days as a vet student, captivated by animals and the science behind their care, to her relentless pursuit of the next peak in mountain running, Jasmin is the embodiment of grit and passion. Today, we’ll dig into her incredible journey, exploring how she’s balanced—and thrived—at the intersection of veterinary medicine and ultra-running, and the lessons she’s picked up along the way. So sit back, grab a cup of tea and enjoy my conversation with the one-and-only Dr. Jasmin Paris. 2024/08/05
On today’s show, I’m joined by veterinarian, multiple practice owner and digital storyteller, Dr. Cody Creelman. Join us as we talk about Dr. Cody’s exciting journey in and out of veterinary practice, culminating in his new practice FenVet, an ultramodern clinic looking to reimagine veterinary care. Dr. Cody began his veterinary career with a focus on large animal practice, where he quickly became a respected figure, known for his dedication and expertise. Amongst being a veterinarian, multiple practice owner, Cody is also a digital storyteller—sharing his story and daily adventures in entertaining and educational ways that have garnered over 20 million views, followed by loyal cohorts of ranchers, veterinary professionals and the public alike. From working a construction job seven days a week to pay for university, to veterinary graduate, to partner, to multiple practice owner — Cody didn’t catch his breath. However, in 2019, a series of unexpected events led him to pivot dramatically, leaving behind his established career to explore new horizons. Cody loaded up his family and set off into the unknown. After swimming in America’s tidal pools, hiking Redwood’s National Park amongst the oldest trees in the world and sleeping out under the stars, a new challenge started to emerge for Cody. Driven by a desire to innovate and improve the veterinary experience for both clients and practitioners. He opened FenVet in Airdrie, Alberta in May 2021. A new ultramodern clinic, mostly working with dogs and cats. Ep 76: Veterinary Medicine to King of Online Education, with Anthony Chadwick
2024/06/10
On today’s show, I’m joined by veterinary surgeon turned King of online veterinary education, founder and CEO of The Webinar Vet, musician, environmentalist and Liverpool FC fan, Anthony Chadwick. Anthony Chadwick knew from the age of 8 that he wanted to be a veterinarian. After graduating from his home university in Liverpool, he worked as a small animal veterinarian for over 20 years.  After attending a webinar conference in 2010, Anthony saw an opportunity. Looking to make veterinary education easier, more accessible and affordable for vet professionals with very busy lives, Anthony carved out and pioneered the first online space for veterinary education through his founding of The Webinar Vet in 2010.  The Webinar Vet has now been online for over 13 years, with over 3,000+ hours of video education and vets and nurses from well over 100 countries having benefited from its broad video encyclopaedia. Anthony’s itch for pioneering and innovation doesn't stop there, as he continues to spread the word for circularity and sustainability in the veterinary business and beyond. He has recently completed a Circular Economy and Sustainability Strategies course at the University of Cambridge, and is hosting the third annual Veterinary Green Discussion Forum in June of this year. With a principal focus on leaving the planet in the same way we found it, Anthony’s personal life and businesses are built on the foundation of circularity and sustainability. The Webinar Vet is Carbon Negative, having planted over 7,000 trees so far and has cultivated wildflower meadows near its office.  Anthony continues to facilitate regeneration into a more sustainable, environmentally friendly space by encouraging big and small companies to become more ambitious with their targets on climate, biodiversity and resource use to help keep our beautiful planet safe. And as a part of this mission, he is hosting the third annual Veterinary Green Discussion Forum at the London Wetland Centre on the 18th of June this year.  In this episode, Anthony discusses his personal journey from veterinary surgeon to starting The Webinar Vet, strategies for practices and business owners to improve their sustainability, global sustainability, pilgrimage and slowing down, and of course, the importance of Liverpool FC. So sit back, grab a cup of tea and enjoy my conversation with the King of online education, Anthony Chadwick. Ep 75: Can Vet Heroes Get To Net Zeros? Sustainable Futures, with Dr. Jeremy Watson
2024/04/03
Can Vet Heroes Get To Net Zeros? Sustainable Futures, with Dr. Jeremy WatsonAbout the GuestDr. Jeremy Watson completed his Bachelor of Veterinary Science with honours at the University of Melbourne in 1986. He established the Brimbank Vet Clinic in 1998, a small animal practice in suburban Melbourne. During 2011, the clinic was rebuilt incorporating the latest environmental design features, facilitating a pathway to make the practice carbon neutral. In 2013, Dr. Watson achieved membership by examination to the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in the discipline of small animal surgery. Dr. Watson joined Vets for Climate Action in 2020 to help amplify the role that veterinary teams can play in motivating our community to take urgent action on climate change. Within this organisation, he has been working specifically on the Climate Care Program for Veterinary Practices. Dr. Watson brings to light the crucial role of integrating business culture and strategic planning in veterinary practices to foster a conducive environment for sustainability efforts. He underscores the necessity for management's commitment to spearhead this journey, through strategic fund allocation, visionary leadership, and setting a clear direction for the practice's future. The absence of such unified leadership and vision, he warns, could hamper efforts to curb carbon emissions, depriving them of the essential support needed for success. Dr. Watson further explores the power of collective action, emphasizing the importance of engaging with a broad spectrum of stakeholders - from manufacturers and distributors to equipment makers, end-users, and disposal services. He illustrates how such collaborations can effectively tackle challenges and pave the way for adopting more sustainable practices across the board. For example, the adoption of sustainable anesthesia practices, such as low-flow anesthesia or total intravenous anesthesia, achieved through the concerted efforts of anesthesiologists, equipment manufacturers, and veterinary nurses. Highlighting the difficult pathway to achieving net zero carbon emissions, Dr. Watson discusses the importance of setting clear, achievable targets. He references the science-based target initiative, advocating for the establishment of intermediate goals over the next 5 to 10 years, with the ultimate objective of reaching net zero by 2050. These targets, he argues, serve as critical milestones, guiding veterinary practices towards systematically reducing their carbon footprint. In summary, this episode of Blunt Dissection underscores the indispensable role of strategic alignment among practice management, industry partners, and professional organizations in embedding sustainable practices within veterinary medicine. Through collective efforts and clear goal-setting, veterinary practices are well-positioned to make significant strides towards a sustainable, net zero future. Join us as we navigate the intricacies of sustainability in veterinary practices, illuminated by Dr. Jeremy Watson's pioneering insights and strategic guidance.
