Stand-up comedian James Stanley tells us that becoming a comic is its own right of passage - to be a great headliner, you have to have been through all the tests, and by then, you’ve got to have the hour you need. He earned his stripes. Most recently, he got stuck in a blizzard between Winona and Minneapolis, and a farm hand had to dig him out: literally! It’s crazy how material works in some places and not others - just ask stand-up comic Ralph Anthony. In his interview with Art of Bombing’s host Dan Bublitz Jr, he recalls his most influential quote from George Carlin: “If it works on Thursday and it works on Friday but not on Saturday: it’s the crowd.” What that means to Anthony is: that you can’t be too hard on yourself. Christopher Keith Tyler, a full-time stand-up comic and founder of KAWmedy Entertainment, tells us that there are four layers of bombing - each one progressively worse than the last. Jennifer Sutherland is a Denver-area comic who does both sketch and stand-up comedy. She tells Dan Bublitz Jr that when things go wrong on stage you have to take ownership - in other words, in order for a comic to improve, he or she can’t simply blame the audience. Jennifer reminds us that it’s tough to talk about personal stuff with some audiences - she and Dan explore how to deal with dark material without making the crowd so sympathetic that they feel sorry for you. If you feel the crowd isn’t into it, Jennifer says you have to avoid self-sabotage - do your best - because you can’t read their minds - they may be really into it. Overcoming negative feelings isn’t easy when you’re a performer - Jennifer and Dan jam about different ways to get your mind moving in a new direction before the show.
