Walk Humbly with Your God - A Look at Micah 6:8
2026/10/20
“No, O people, the LORD has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” – Micah 6:8 (NLT) What does God really want from us? Micah 6:8 is one of those verses that seems to capture the heart of what it means to follow God in just a few words: do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God. It’s a familiar verse, one that appears on artwork, in social media bios, and in countless sermons. But when we understand the context in which these words were spoken, they become an even more powerful invitation to examine how we’re living. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason explores the powerful message of Micah 6:8 and what it reveals about the kind of life God desires for His people. Through the prophet Micah, God confronts Israel’s injustice, pride, and empty religious gestures, reminding them that genuine faith should transform the way they live and treat others. But there’s one phrase in particular that deserves our attention: walk humbly with your God. What does it mean to walk with God? Why is humility so essential to the Christian life? And how might our relationship with Jesus change if we approached each day with greater gentleness, purpose, and openness to His leading? In this episode, we explore: * The historical and biblical context behind Micah 6:8 and why God’s message to Israel still matters today* Why God desires genuine transformation rather than empty religious gestures* What it means to do what is right and love mercy in our relationships with others* Why walking with God invites us into a life of gentleness, purpose, and intentionality* How humility shapes our relationship with God and our willingness to learn, grow, and be corrected* The significance of the words “with your God” and what they reveal about God’s desire for a personal relationship with us Following Jesus is a lifelong journey of learning to reflect His character in the way we think, speak, and live. Micah 6:8 gives us a beautiful picture of that journey, reminding us that a life centered on God is marked by goodness, mercy, and humility. The invitation is simple, but it has the power to transform every part of our lives: do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God. Longing for Joy with Alastair Sterne
2026/10/13
Originally Published Dec. 2024 “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” – John 15:11 (NLT) What if joy is closer than you think? We all want to experience joy, but sometimes it can feel just out of reach. Life gets busy, circumstances become difficult, and seasons of anxiety, depression, or disappointment can leave us wondering where our joy has gone. Even when we’re following Jesus, we can find ourselves longing for a joy that seems difficult to experience. But what if that longing is actually pointing us toward something beautiful? In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason Wieland talks with author and pastor Alistair Sterne about his book Longing for Joy and what it means to recognize, cultivate, and experience the joy of the Lord. Together, they explore why joylessness happens, how our longing for joy draws us toward God, and how the beauty of creation, our relationships, and our everyday experiences can become opportunities to encounter God’s goodness. They also discuss the surprising connection between joy and the Trinity, why joy doesn’t always look like happiness, and how learning to see other people as occasions for joy can transform our relationships. In this episode, we explore: * Why we experience seasons of joylessness and how to recognize what’s contributing to them* How our longing for joy can draw us into a deeper relationship with God* What Scripture reveals about the joy of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit* How to recognize God’s goodness and experience joy through creation and everyday moments* Why relationships are essential to cultivating joy and how we can become people who bring joy to others* Practical habits that help us become more attentive to the joy already present in our lives Joy is a gift from God, and learning to experience it is part of our ongoing journey of following Jesus. As we become more attentive to God’s presence, more grateful for His gifts, and more intentional in our relationships, we can begin to recognize opportunities for joy all around us. The invitation is to pay attention, draw near to Jesus, and discover the joy that comes from living in His presence. Living with Hope in the Midst of Struggle with Dr. Alan Noble (Rewind)
2026/09/22
What do you do when simply getting through everyday life feels like a burden? We live in a time when anxiety, depression, loneliness, and other mental health struggles are increasingly common. While we may be more willing to talk about these struggles than previous generations, many people still feel isolated in what they’re experiencing. And when suffering doesn’t have an easy solution, it can be tempting to wonder whether things will ever get better. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason talks with Dr. Alan Noble, author of On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden and Gift of Living, about what it means to live faithfully in the midst of mental and emotional struggles. Alan reminds us that two things can be true at the same time: life can be incredibly difficult, and life can still be a beautiful gift from God. Our suffering is real, but it does not get the final word. In this episode, we explore: * Why anxiety, depression, and other mental health struggles resonate with so many people today* How different generations approach conversations about mental health* The difference between healthy vulnerability and oversharing* Why suffering is not always a problem we can simply “fix”* How to care well for someone experiencing mental or emotional struggles* Why community is so important when we’re suffering* How to move toward healing without pretending the struggle isn’t real* What it means to believe that your life is a gift from a God who knows you completely and loves you There may be seasons when hope feels difficult to hold onto. But our struggles are not the end of the story. Healing is real, God is present, and even in the midst of suffering, your life remains a gift worth receiving. The Burden & Gift of Living
2026/09/15
What does it mean to live faithfully when life feels heavy? Life is a gift, but that doesn’t mean it always feels like one. We experience beauty, joy, relationships, and moments of deep meaning alongside anxiety, disappointment, grief, uncertainty, and seasons when simply making it through the day can feel exhausting. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason explores the tension between the burden and the gift of living. Rather than offering easy answers or pretending that faith makes the difficult parts of life disappear, this conversation considers how we can honestly acknowledge the weight we carry while remaining open to the goodness, grace, and presence of God. In this episode, we explore: * Why life can feel like both a burden and a gift* How our faith makes room for the full range of human experience* What to do when anxiety, sadness, or difficulty feel overwhelming* Why acknowledging struggle is different from surrendering to hopelessness* How to recognize goodness even in difficult seasons* What it looks like to receive life as a gift without minimizing its pain Following Jesus doesn’t require us to pretend everything is okay. Instead, we can learn to hold joy and sorrow, beauty and brokenness, gratitude and grief together—and discover that God is present with us in all of it. Delighting in Jesus with Asheritah Ciuciu (Rewind)
2026/09/08
There’s a question at the heart of the new book “Delighting in Jesus” that caught my attention: it says, “I know I should read by Bible and pray every day, but I’m just not consistent. For many Christians, ‘daily devotions’ and ‘spiritual disciplines’ strike guilt and shame in our hearts. But what if we got it all wrong? What if our Christian experience hinges not on perfect spiritual disciplines, but on the perfect love of a Father who delights in us?”  This has been a topic I’ve been interested in for a while now: what does relationship with Jesus really mean. And now there’s a new word entering the conversation: delight. We often talk about joy or happiness, but I’m so grateful to my guest today, Asheritah Ciuciu, for focusing in on the word delight. Asheritah is the host of the Prayers of Rest Podcast and author of many books including Full, Bible & Breakfast, Walking with God, and her latest, Delighting in Jesus. In this conversation, Asheritah and I talk about why “delight” is an important word when thinking about our relationship with Jesus, why we don’t need to be afraid of being broken, how to build your joy center in your brain, and much more. I want to note too, in the show notes for episode you’ll find links to purchase Delighting in Jesus (which I highly recommend) and also a link to a devotional personality quiz that will help you understand better how God created you to feel most connected to him. I hope you enjoy both of these resources. Choose to Move In (Rewind)
2026/09/01
“Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” - John 15:12-13 We live in a time when it has become incredibly easy to disengage. It’s easier to stay home. Easier to keep scrolling. Easier to avoid someone else’s mess. Easier to say “I’m sorry you’re going through that” than to actually enter into what they’re going through. But easier doesn’t always mean better. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason explores an idea he calls “moving in”: intentionally choosing engagement over isolation and moving toward people rather than away from them. Scripture repeatedly calls followers of Jesus to value others, carry one another’s burdens, love our neighbors, and enter into meaningful relationship with one another.   In this episode, we explore: -Why our culture makes isolation and disengagement increasingly easy-What it means to intentionally “move in” toward other people-Why meaningful friendships require choosing engagement even when it’s inconvenient-What the Good Samaritan teaches us about compassion that actually costs something-How technology can contribute to isolation, but doesn’t have to determine our choices-Why carrying one another’s burdens is central to following Jesus-How Jesus Himself modeled a life of moving toward people In the story of the Good Samaritan, two people saw a hurting man and kept moving. The Samaritan saw the same man, felt compassion, stopped, and entered into his need. His decision cost him time, energy, resources, and money, but he chose the harder and better path.   Moving in is a choice. We can choose what is comfortable and convenient, or we can choose relationship. We can stay on the sidelines, or we can enter into someone else’s life. We can see people as interruptions, or we can see them as invitations to love. And ultimately, we move toward others because Jesus first moved toward us. He didn’t remain distant from our brokenness. He came close, took on flesh, bore our burdens, and entered our mess. As followers of Jesus, we’re invited to reflect that same heart by loving deeply, serving generously, and building the kind of community that reflects His Kingdom.   If this episode encouraged you, consider subscribing, leaving a review, and sharing it with someone you want to intentionally “move in” toward. A Gentle Touch: Love Languages in Action
2026/08/25
“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.” - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT) Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for someone is stop trying to fix their problem and simply be with them. When someone we love is hurting, frustrated, grieving, or just having a bad day, our instinct can be to offer advice, find a solution, or help them see things differently. But sometimes what they really need is much simpler: our presence. A listening ear. Or maybe just a hug. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason explores what we can learn from Job’s friends, who actually got things right before they got them very, very wrong. When they first arrived, they entered into Job’s grief, sat beside him, and remained silent for seven days. It was when they started talking that things began to fall apart. In this episode, we explore: -Why our instinct to “fix” someone’s pain can sometimes get in the way of loving them well-What Job’s friends teach us about the ministry of presence-Why carrying someone’s burden doesn’t necessarily mean trying to remove it-How understanding the ways people give and receive love can help us care for them better-The power of a hug, a gentle touch, or simply sitting with someone who is hurting-How the comfort we receive from God equips us to comfort others Scripture calls us to carry one another’s burdens and to “mourn with those who mourn.” Sometimes discipleship looks less like having the right thing to say and more like being willing to sit beside someone in whatever they are carrying. Ultimately, we love others out of the overflow of the love and comfort we have first received from God. As we abide in Christ and experience His care for us, we can learn to enter into the lives of others with a different goal: not necessarily to fix the problem, but to love the person in the way they most need to be loved. If this episode encouraged you, consider subscribing, leaving a review, and sharing it with someone who could use a reminder of the power of simply being present. Jesus Looked at Him and Loved Him
2026/08/18
“Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” - Mark 10:21-23 (NLT) What if the most important part of the story of the rich young ruler isn’t what Jesus said—but how Jesus looked at him? In Mark 10:21, before issuing one of His most challenging invitations, Scripture tells us: “Jesus looked at him and loved him.” That single sentence reveals something profound about the heart of Christ. His call to surrender wasn’t rooted in disappointment or condemnation, but in genuine love and compassion.   In this episode, we explore: -Why Jesus’ look of love changes how we read the rich young ruler’s story-What it means to hold both truth and compassion together-How our identity can become anchored in possessions, success, or self-righteousness instead of Christ-What parents, leaders, and everyday followers of Jesus can learn from the way Jesus interacted with difficult people-Three practical ways to “look at others with love” in your daily life—through your eyes, your presence, and your heart   Whether you’re leading your family, serving in ministry, or simply trying to become more like Jesus, this conversation is an invitation to see people the way He does—and to remember that His loving gaze extends to us, even in our own struggles. If this episode encouraged you, consider subscribing, leaving a review, and sharing it with someone who could use the reminder that truth spoken in love has the power to transform lives. The Invitation to Confession with Jamin Goggin (Rewind)
2026/08/11
“The act of confessing our sins to one another is a graced invitation to practice the way of faith, hope, and love. The soul tempted to despair will be particularly allergic to ecclesial confession, but it is here that they will find great remedy for their agonizing condition. For in confessing their sins to one another, they are heard with the faith of fellow saints, they are encouraged by the hope of fellow pilgrims, and they are loved with the charity of brothers and sisters.” - Pastoral Confessions Confession is not an easy topic - but it is a healthy topic. Oftentimes when the topic of confession is brought up, it’s met with one of two responses: 1. "My walls are now up and I’m tuning out what is being talked about." 2. "This is so true and important and a lot of other people have things to confess." But like I said, confession is healthy. And even more than that, confession is necessary. Now I may be biased, but one of the best books on confession releases one week from today - Pastoral Confessions written by my friend Jamin Goggin. Jamin has been on this podcast a few times in the past. He’s an associate professor at Talbot School of Theology, Director of the Healthy Pastor Initiative for Finishing the Task, and one of the most thoughtful theologians I know. In today’s conversation Jamin and I talk about what led him to write about confession, the real human struggles with sin and confession, some ways we can more normalize confession, and much more. You can find a link to order Pastoral Confession in the show notes. I should point out, and we talk about this in the conversation, Pastoral Confessions is a book primarily written to Pastors, but its deep thoughts and themes of confession are important for all of us.  Doable Discipleship is a podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland.  Resources Related to This Episode:https://store.pastors.com/products/pastoral-confessions-the-healing-path-to-faith-ministry-hardcover-book Subscribe to the Doable Discipleship podcast at Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/doable-discipleship/id1240966935) or Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/1Zc9nuwQZOLadbFCZCmZ1V) Intro Music:Royalty Free Music from Tunetank.comTrack: Escape From The Town by SHANTIhttps://tunetank.com/track/267-escape-from-the-town/ Outro Music:Royalty Free Music from Tunetank.comTrack: Peace by VictorWaynehttps://tunetank.com/track/5040-peace/ Episode Originally Published October 2025
The Urgency of Grace in a Worn-Out World (Rewind)
2026/08/04
“Why do some of us experience Christianity as a burden and others as a refuge? The answer, I am convinced, has to do with grace. Grace is the Big Relief at the heart of Christianity. When grace is down-played or qualified, faith turns into a project and then a burden. Project religion - the ancient human enterprise of proving ourselves morally and spiritually worthy of God’s love - is everywhere. When anchored to grace, however, Christianity remains good news. More than that, faith becomes a source of energy rather than a drain.” - an excerpt from The Big Relief Today I’m excited to talk about one of my favorite books of the year. As I’ve mentioned a few times on this podcast, I’ve been on a bit of a grace kick lately. Grace was something I knew about, but honestly hadn’t spent a whole ton of time considering. It’s just the last few months though that I’ve really been sitting with grace and seeing just how beautiful, how important it is. So imagine my excitement when I saw a book about the urgency of grace in a worn-out world - right up my alley! And imagine how happy I was to start reading this book and seeing how good and funny it was. So today I’m thrilled to have on David Zahl, author of many books including The Big Relief. In this conversation, David and I talk about what makes grace stand out, the vertical and horizontal nature of grace, the difference between grace and mercy, how the church can be better beacons of grace, how to start living a grace first life today, and much more.  Doable Discipleship is a podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland.  Resources Related to This Episode:https://www.amazon.com/Big-Relief-Urgency-Grace-Worn-Out/dp/1587435578 Subscribe to the Doable Discipleship podcast at Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/doable-discipleship/id1240966935) or Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/1Zc9nuwQZOLadbFCZCmZ1V) Episode first released August 2025
Falling in Love with Jesus with JD Lyonhart (Rewind)
2026/07/28
“For the beauty of a journey is that it doesn’t need to be just one thing but can be many things spread out over time and over the many legs of the adventure . . . The Christian story may have already played out with robed people in a bygone past, but I believe it also continues to move, roll on, slosh, and rise in me each morning and moon.” - The Journey of God All of history has a central theme: God wants a family. This is why the universe was made - so God could make people. This is the story of the Israelites through the Old Testament. This is redemption story, Jesus living on earth and dying on the cross to make it possible for God’s family to live with him forever. This is the story of the church - spreading the Good News that God wants a family and that family learning how to live together. This is the story of the end, God’s family finally living with Him in perfect relationship forever. This may be a central theme, but there is so much in it to unpack and J.D. Lyonhart does just that in his new book, The Journey of God.  J.D. is a professor of religion and philosophy at University of Jamestown and co-host of the Spiritually Incorrect Podcast. In this episode, J.D. and I talk about why it’s okay to have fun when talking about the Bible, the central theme of Jesus’ presence, how we should think about sin and redemption, current issues facing the church, and much more.  Doable Discipleship is a podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland.  Resources Related to This Episode: https://www.amazon.com/Journey-God-Christianity-Six-Movements/dp/1514009242 Subscribe to the Doable Discipleship podcast at Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/doable-discipleship/id1240966935) or Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/1Zc9nuwQZOLadbFCZCmZ1V) Episode first released July 2025
The 𝐼𝑠-𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 of God: What it Means to be 𝐵𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 Itself with JD Lyonhart
2026/07/21
“And to this the voice bellowed: ‘I AM WHO I AM.’” . . . “At first, I thought maybe this was just God’s way of saying, ‘Hey, I exist. I AM real. Notice me!’ Or maybe it was God’s way of avoiding the question. I ask, ‘Who are you?’ and he says, ‘I AM WHAT I AM.’ In other words, it’s none of your business who I am, Moses. But the more I’ve thought about it, the more the whole ‘I AM’ thing has begun to strike a chord. You see, I keep asking which one of the gods ‘is’ real. But that question already assumes I know what the meaning of ‘is’ is. What is is-ness? What does it mean to exist - to be something that is rather than isn’t? . . . If the gods are just other beings that exist, then they must derive their existence from something else, and that source would be the true God, wouldn’t it?” - Zeus Was An Atheist, pg. 11 I’m on a mission to make learning the Bible, and talking about God, fun. And to show that we can do so in a worshipful, honoring, reverent way. When I first met author and professor J.D. Lyonhart last year to talk about his book The Journey of God, I knew I met a fellow compatriot in this mission. His books are incredibly fun and funny, while wrestling with deep philosophical, Biblical issues. His latest book is called Zeus was an Atheist: An Odd Retelling of the Moses Story. Even the title elicits a chuckle. The book puts you in the mind of Moses, not from a “this is surely what he was thinking” standpoint, but, yes, an odd retelling standpoint. We walk with Moses through all of the Exodus events you know, but listen as Moses wrestles with, meditates on, and acknowledges who God is - Being, Beauty, Goodness, Truth, Justice. J.D. Lyonhart is Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy at the University of Jamestown a Fellow at the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Platonism at Cambridge University, and cohost of the Spiritually Incorrect Podcast.  This conversation today, much like the book itself we’re talking about, is both fun and thought-provoking and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.  Doable Discipleship is a podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Navigating the Bible: The Message of the New Testament with Ben Witherington III
2026/07/14
In August of 2024 I started a series called Navigating the Bible with the goal of talking about every book of the Bible. I didn’t know at the time how long it would take. I didn’t know who would say yes to coming on with me to talk about these books. But now, just about two years later, this is the final episode of the series. I may do some additional episodes down the line about to add things here or there, but today’s episode is a bit of a capstone for the Navigating the Bible series. The New Testament is, rightfully so, all about Jesus. The Gospels are the accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry on earth. The epistles are about the living out the reality of Jesus. As we’ve looked at each book of the New Testament we’ve answered questions like what are the major themes of this book, what does this book teach us about God, what does this book teach us about ourselves, and so on. Today we’re going to pose these questions about the whole of the New Testament so why not have somebody on who has written about every book of the New Testament. My guest today is Dr. Ben Witherington III, Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary and author of over sixty books.  Doable Discipleship is a podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Navigating the Bible: Revelation
2026/07/07
“Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders. And they sang in a mighty chorus: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered - to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.’ And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.’” - Revelation 5:11-13 Revelation, the final book of the Bible, and perhaps the most, “what am I to do with this?”. Revelation is known for its complexity, but, at its heart, is a beautiful message of hope, worship, and love. I’m going to be up front with you: if you are looking for insight and answers to all of the many elements of Revelation, this is not the podcast for you. We won’t be talking about seals, beasts, dragons, the 144,00 - you know, what some people may call the greatest hits of Revelation. But, if you want to know how best to read the book, the message of the book, the heart of the book, how it ties into other parts of Scripture, and what this book teaches . . . this is the perfect podcast for you. When I was interviewing Craig Blombeck earlier in this series I asked him who I should have on for Revelation and he said, “Well you need Dave Mathewson, without a doubt.” So help us navigate the book of Revelation is Dr. David Mathewson, Associate Professor of New Testament at Denver Seminary and author of multiple books on Revelation.  Doable Discipleship is a podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Navigating the Bible: 1, 2 & 3 John
2026/06/30
“Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment - to love one another - is the same message you heard before. Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment , and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.” 1 John 2:7-8 John’s epistles, 1, 2, and 3 John, are a beautiful extension from John’s Gospel. John continues his central themes of abiding and living out the call to love one another while spending considerable time on a new theme: confidence in salvation. John talks a lot about sin, about false teachers, about issues of the heart - but he does all of this under the cloak of what it means to be a child of God, to be in fellowship with Jesus, and to love one another. To help us navigate John’s letters is Dr. Gary Derickson, recently retired Professor Emeritus at Corban University and author of a commentary on John’s letters.  Doable Discipleship is a podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland.
