Yesterday, we witnessed yet another mass shooting in America... This time, on the anniversary of another mass shooting. The Parkland High School mass shooting. They can no longer have their days to mourn. They have to share days.  I think I speak for the majority of Americans when I say that I wonder if we have become desensitized and if we actually will ever do anything. Or have we given up? Accepting this as our new normal. And I can exchange "we" for "me" cause I found myself today, desensitized to 21 people being shot at a Superbowl parade. It almost felt like just another news story... Until I put up a question box asking the Kansas City Instafamilia how they were doing... Their answers were sobering.  This isn't an episode with answers... But I hope it is filled with the right questions. Today we are courageously joined by Katy Dieckhaus, who lost her daughter Evelyn in the Covenant School Shooting in Nashville in 2023, and Annette Lake, who lost both her father Kenny and son Terrance to suicide by firearm less than a year apart in the early 2000s. They’re sharing their stories with you. We are also joined by Erin Rogus, who is walking with people like Katy and Annette to fight for change. Erin is the policy director for Voices For A Safer Tennessee, which is a nonprofit, nonpartisan statewide coalition dedicated to prioritizing firearm safety and advocating for common sense gun laws to make communities across Tennessee safer for all of us. Listening to stories like Katy's and Annette's is how we practice walking with people and not standing on issues. Let me ask you a question: How are you feeling this holiday season? A) I’m feeling the Christmas magic! Grateful!  B) I’m sad or lonely or really stressed… If you answered yes, you’re in good company. Maybe you’re having the best Christmas season you’ve had in a long time! Or maybe you’re coping with grief, illness, financial insecurity, or something else. There’s a good chance you’re dealing with some mix of all of the above, and that’s okay.  The holidays can be complicated, and every Christmas song tries to tell you to “be of good cheer.” I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to. And you’re not alone. So how do you cope when the holidays are hard? Take a listen, and I’ll share some ways I’m shedding expectations this year. (And I sing a little too…)  Prayer: God, we acknowledge who You are, and we are grateful. We praise You for who You are, and we thank You for what You’ve done. We know You’ve done so much for us this year, but we also want to come to You and say there’s many of us that are struggling this holiday season. May we base our expectations on Your expectations. May we be grateful for the gift that Jesus was in our life and is in our life, and the fact, God, that You sent Your only Son. And if that is the end of our gratitude, may we not feel shame in that being all we can celebrate. May You bring comfort to those who are mourning. May You bring freedom to those that are chained. And may You bring peace to those that are in pain. We pray all these things in the name of Jesus.
