2026/09/25
Harry McCahill is co-owner of Blue Element, based in Dominica. When he's not running the school and organising world-class freediving competitions he is an accomplished athlete himself, having surpassed the 100m mark in CWT and the 80m mark in CNF. In this episode we discuss: Harry just attended the 2026 CMAS Depth World Championships in Roatan, Honduras. Harry is originally from the UK.He left corporate life to study astrophysics in Hawaii and then moved in to freediving. He took up freediving during COVID in Hawaii. Harry did his first depth camp with Kurt Chambers from Hawaii. Shout out to Johnny Sunnex, see episode #68 and LOST EPISODE #2. Harry is now co-owner of Blue Element Dominica with Johnny. How has Harry experienced the evolution of the freediving scene over the last 5 years? How is the freediving business over in Dominica these days? The difficulties of organising a competition and live streaming in Dominica. How did OnlyFans end up as a sponsor for the competition? The importance of better live-streaming experiences and bringing more money in to the sport of freediving. The core issue in live-streaming freediving competitions is improving the signal. Harry hit the big 100m mark this year and has hit 81m in CNF at the time of recording. What does Harry like so much about CNF? Why is Donny taking a break from training for freediving? Has Harry experienced  issues with hypoxic episodes and what does he think about it? Harry has a bit of a history in triathlon as well, and rowing when he was younger. What kind of complementary training does Harry do for freediving and what does his schedule look like for that, and fitting it around his deep diving? How has Harry improved his relaxation, which has been a game changer for him. Desert Island Questions - PATREON EXCLUSIVE CONTENT Why does he freedive? #178 | Marco Altini | HRV4 Training
2026/09/07
Marco Altini is a scientist, developer and athletic coach who’s work centres on the intersection of health, technology, and human performance. In 2012 he founded HRV4 Training, a mobile platform that revolutionised physiological tracking by becoming the first app capable of reliably measuring heart rate variability (HRV) using a smartphone camera. In this episode we discuss: Donny has been using  Marco’s HRV4 Training APP for ten years now. First we fill Marco in on what freediving actually is! Marco is originally from Italy but has spend most of 20 years between the USA and the Netherlands. After returning to university to study sport science he became a coach to athletes and advises some companies in the wearable space. As a recreational athlete Marco focuses on trail running. What is HRV/Heart Rate Variability? HRV is an indirect proxy to our nervous system’s response to stress. The optimal range for HRV is determined only for the individual, it is not a range that applies to the general population as a whole. There is a strong genetic component to HRV. How a reading is taken using the HRV4 Training APP. The difference between through-the-night measurements and on-the-spot measurements in the morning. Should you lie or sit to take the HRV reading? HRV trends may help to predict incoming sickness. What is parasympathetic suppression in athletes? What is the difference between rMSSD and SDNN? How are the proprietary scores used by Garmin, Suunto, etc? A question from Patreon supporter Bizo Silva about premature atrial contractions and other kinds of arrhythmia. A question from Patreon supporter Brady. How do ‘recovery’ protocols involving sauna and cold-plunge for example, affect HRV. What are the main stealth stressors affecting HRV? Why does he trail run?
