Barca flying, Bayern drop points again + De Zerbi stays but so do Marseille's woes
2026/02/03
James is joined in the Totally studio by James Horncastle, Tom Williams and Seb Stafford-Bloor with Pol Ballus joining from Barcelona as the Euro crew assemble to discuss this week's continental happenings. Bayern Munich have dropped points for a second weekend running in the Bundesliga. Seb was in the Volksparkstadion to see Hamburg draw 2-2 with the league leaders, meaning they are now 6 points clear of 2nd place Dortmund. In Spain, Real left it late to beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 with Mbappe's winner coming in the 10th minute of injury time. That kept them within one point of Barca who comfortably beat Elche away 3-1 with goals from Yamal, Rashford and Ferran Torres. No change at the top of Serie A with Inter and Napoli both winning and second placed Milan still to play Bologna Tuesday night. Same story in France where Lens and PSG both won, but Marseille's horror week continued as they blew a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Paris FC. Plus Timo Werner's favourite Döner house & Antony spins again. Produced by Lucy Oliva and Jesse Howard. RUNNING ORDER:  • PART 1: Moment of the week (0.40) • PART 2a: Bundesliga review - Bayern drop more points (10.50) • PART 3a: Ligue 1 review - Marseille in meltdown (25.20) • PART 4a: Serie A review - Inter sitting pretty (37.10) • PART 5a: La Liga review - Top 2 win (53.30) Hosted on Acast. It was a great matchday for leaders Arsenal who go 6 points clear after their 4-0 win at Leeds. Man City were cruising at Spurs but surrendered a 2-0 lead thanks to Dominic Solanke’s acrobatics. Plus Villa lose a second home game in a row to 10-man Brentford. Is the title race over? Man United make it 3 wins out of 3 under Michael Carrick with Benjamin Sesko’s stoppage time strike against Fulham. The Red Devils stay 4th in the Champions League race. Champions League bonanza, Bayern’s first loss + Mbappe’s Panenka
2026/01/27
Jimbo is joined by James Horncastle, Pol Ballus, Seb Stafford-Bloor and Tom Williams to discuss the latest European football. The Champions League reaches its final game showdown with all 36 teams playing simultaneously on Wednesday night. Might all 6 English teams make the top 8? If so, will Barcelona and Inter face the play offs? Could Conte's Napoli be heading out? Could Bodø/Glimt, Brugge or Mourinho's Benfica sneak in? Bayern finally lose their first match of the Bundesliga season at home to Augsburg, whilst Dortmund beat Union convincingly ahead of their showdown with Inter. It was a perfect weekend for Chivu's Inter who beat Pisa 6-2 whilst title rivals Napoli were thrashed 3-0 by Juve, with Roma and Milan sharing the points in the capital. In Spain, Mbappe's Panenka helped him set a European record, and Yamal's worldie in the rain kept Barca 1 point above Real in the La Liga title race. And in France, PSG go back on top via a Bradley Barcola goal and a 1-0 win at Auxerre, with Lens losing 3-1 in the Velodrome thanks to a debut goal from Arsenal's teenage loanee Ethan Nwaneri. Man United stun leaders Arsenal + Slot under pressure at Liverpool?
2026/01/26
Jimbo, Daniel Storey, Matt Davies-Adams and Tim Spiers are in the studio after a seismic matchday 23 in the Premier League. It’s now 3 games without a victory for Arsenal as Man United inflict a first home defeat of the season on the leaders. The Gunners’ lead is down to 4 points while Michael Carrick has taken the Red Devils into the top 4! Villa bounce back from defeat against Everton with a very impressive 2-0 win at St James’s Park. And Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea momentarily went 4th, extending Palace’s winless run to 11 games. Liverpool’s unbeaten run is ended in a five-goal thriller at Bournemouth. Not a good time for Arne Slot to see his side slip out of the top 4. At the bottom, there were wins for Forest and West Ham, while Burnley took a point from Spurs, as the fan fury towards Frank continues. Produced by Charlie Jones RUNNING ORDER:  • PART 1: Arsenal 2-3 Man United (03.00) • PART 2a: Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa (15.00)  • PART 2b: Man City 2-0 Wolves (21.30) • PART 3a: Crystal Palace 1-3 Chelsea (33.00) • PART 3b: Brentford 0-2 Nottingham Forest (45.00) • PART 4a: West Ham 3-1 Sunderland (50.00) • PART 4b: Burnley 2-2 Tottenham (53.00) • PART 4c: Bournemouth 3-2 Liverpool (57.00) • PART 4d: Fulham 2-1 Brighton (66.00) Hosted on Acast. Arteta takes on Carrick in the Premier League as English clubs dominate in Europe
2026/01/22
Jimbo has Duncan Alexander, Natalie Gedra and Mark Carey for company in the studio ahead of a bumper Premier League weekend. The Champions League midweek concludes with comfortable wins for Liverpool and Newcastle, plus a dominant but stressful victory for Chelsea. Five of the top eight teams are English heading into next week’s league phase finale. Why are Premier League clubs seemingly finding life in Europe easier? How easy will life for leaders Arsenal be when Michael Carrick’s resurgent Man United head to the Emirates? And who should Mikel Arteta play up front? Elsewhere, depleted Villa head to St James’s Park, it’s Glasner Rosenior at Selhurst Park and will Dr Tottenham turn up at Turf Moor? Plus the loveliest managers, managers that cause injuries, punch-ups and pasta without sauce. Produced by Charlie Jones We’re asking you to fill out a quick survey about you and your podcast habits by going to theathletic.com/survey26. Man City battered by Bodø as perfect Arsenal outclass Inter
2026/01/21
Jimbo is joined by Jack Lang, Seb Stafford-Bloor and JJ Bull for a midweek Totally Extra to discuss Tuesday night's Champions League games. Norwegian broadcaster Martin Sleipnes drops in to talk about a historic night for Bodø/Glimt who beat Man City 3-1 in the Arctic circle. It could have been more for Glimt who peppered City's goal against a tired-looking defence, as Rodri got sent off for 2 yellows. Arsenal meanwhile continue their perfect Champions League form as they brushed aside Serie A leaders Inter 3-1 at San Siro and Spurs finally gave their home fans something to cheer about as they beat 10-man Dortmund 2-0. Tom Williams joins to discuss PSG's last minute loss to Sporting, plus a roundup of the rest of Tuesday nights games and Brighton v Bournemouth on Monday. Produced by Charlie Jones and Jesse Howard. The Champions League returns! + Barca’s 11-game winning run is over
2026/01/20
Jimbo’s got European football friends Pol Ballús, James Horncastle, Seb Stafford-Bloor and Tom Williams alongside him as the Champions League re-enters the room…  We start with those midweek UCL MD7 ties - including the tight battle for a top eight finish with the likes of Tottenham v Dortmund, Marseille v Liverpool and Juventus v Benfica looking finely poised.  In Serie A, there were tributes to Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso - who passed away on Saturday but left a huge legacy in not only Florence but across the Italian sporting landscape. La Viola honoured him by beating Bologna 2-1 on Sunday to move out of the bottom three.  Over in La Liga, the gap’s been cut to just one point! That’s after Barcelona’s 11-game winning streak was ended by a 2-1 defeat at Real Sociedad. Real Madrid took advantage, beating Levante 2-0 amid a backdrop of boos, whistles and protests in the Spanish capital…  Meanwhile in the Bundesliga, Bayern became the first team in Europe’s top 5 leagues to score 100 goals in all competitions this season as they came from behind to beat Leipzig 5-1 thanks to a second half masterclass from Michael Olise. Plus, what next for Frankfurt after Dino Topmoller was sacked after their latest 3-3 draw?  And over in France - Lens are *still* top of the table thanks to a club-record eight straight Ligue 1 wins. PSG stay a point behind after their 3-0 win over Lille - which featured one of the goals of the season from Ousmane Dembele. All that plus pinchos, personalised apps - and poor ratings! Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER:  • PART 1: Moments of the weekend - and foodie endeavours (00.45) • PART 2: Champions League MD7 key fixtures (12.45) • PART 3: Serie A review - Farewell to Rocco Commisso (27.30) • PART 4: La Liga review - Suddenly all to play for at the top (45.05) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - Olise’s masterclass and Frankfurt call time on Dino (45.05) • PART 6: Ligue 1 review - Lens just keep winning (48.15) Take part in our audience survey for a chance to win an $/£100 Amazon voucher! Man United dominate City in the derby, plus the incredible AFCON finale
2026/01/19
It’s Jimbo, Daniel Storey, Colin Millar and Luis Miguel Echegaray in position after another dramatic weekend of Premier League action. It’s 4 games without a win for Man City as Michael Carrick’s Man United produce a performance for the ages to win 2-0. How did the Red Devils do it? For the second matchday in a row, Arsenal fail to fully capitalise on City’s slip-up as they draw 0-0 at Forest. Will Mikel Arteta come to regret these missed opportunities in the title race? Perhaps not as Villa also stutter with a 1-0 defeat to Everton. We record the pod as the AFCON final is in progress, not knowing what was about to unfold. A controversial penalty, a walk-off, pitch invasions, a Panenka and eventually a heartbreaking defeat for hosts Morocco against Senegal. Maher Mezahi was there. Billed by some as El Sackico, West Ham are last-minute winners at Tottenham, who lose a third straight game. What next for Thomas Frank? And what next for Oliver Glasner after a remarkable few days where he reveals his plan to leave Palace in the summer, then takes aim at the board for abandoning him and his players. Matt Woosnam has more. Produced by Charlie Jones RUNNING ORDER:  • PART 1: Aston Villa 0-1 Everton (05.00) • PART 1b: Wolves 0-0 Newcastle (13.00)  • PART 2a: Man United 2-0 Man City (20.00) • PART 2b: Forest 0-0 Arsenal (33.00) • PART 3a: Glasner takes aim at Eagles board, with Matt Woosnam (38.00) • PART 3b: Spurs 1-2 West Ham (48.00) • PART 4: The rest of the Premier League weekend (55.00) • PART 5: Senegal win AFCON with Maher Mezahi (62.00) Hosted on Acast. 2026/01/17
Jimbo is joined by James Horncastle, Tom Williams and Musa Okwonga as they open up the Totally Almanac in the 90's to celebrate George Weah. "The life of this guy is a film" said his mentor Arsene Wenger; from a Shanty town in Monrovia to becoming the first and only African Ballon d'Or winner and eventually becoming the president of Liberia. King George first won the hearts of Monaco and PSG fans with his dazzling runs and infectious personality before moving to Milan and winning two Serie A titles and scoring countless unforgettable goals. But was his pitch-long run & finish against Verona the goal of the decade? Plus your questions and a fiendish Weah themed quiz question set by Duncan Alexander. Real Madrid sack Alonso + what records can Bayern break?
2026/01/13
Jimbo’s joined by Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús & James Horncastle for a deep-dive into all the latest action and headlines from across the continent.  There’s only one place to start - and the news that broke late on Monday afternoon that Xabi Alonso has been sacked as Real Madrid head coach - and replaced by the club’s reserve team coach Alvaro Arbeloa. The Athletic’s Guillermo Rai joins us for the immediate reaction to the news which followed the 3-2 defeat by dear friends Barcelona in the Supercopa on Sunday evening.  There’s drama of a title race variety in Italy - where the hunt for the Scudetto was reignited once again as Inter, Milan and Napoli all dropped points to open the door for chasers Roma and Juventus.  And in Germany - the Bundesliga returned from the Winterpause in style with goals galore across the weekend including Bayern putting EIGHT past Wolfsburg, while Frankfurt and Dortmund played out a 3-3 thriller on Friday night. Vincent Kompany’s side couldn’t win the title by a record-breaking points margin, could they?  All that plus the latest from the Coupe de France as Endrick marks his debut for Lyon with a winning goal, reminiscing on the ‘Mohawk Trident’ - and dramatic snowscapes in Hamburg.   Produced by Lucy Oliva.
