When photographer Gerald Cyrus began photographing New York City in the 1990s, he was drawn to the streets of Harlem, its neighborhoods, its people, and the vibrant music scene that filled its clubs and lounges. Over the course of a decade, he created a remarkable body of black-and-white photographs that capture everyday life with an intimacy and sense of connection that goes well beyond traditional documentary photography. Cyrus's photographs are attentive to the people who give a place its character, finding beauty and energy in moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. Those photographs are now collected in his new monograph, Uptown Odyssey, published by TBW Books. The book brings together images made during the 1990s, moving from Harlem's streets and subway platforms to the jazz clubs and nighttime spaces where music and community came together. Many of the subway photographs had remained unseen for more than three decades. For Cyrus, the book represents the culmination of a body of work that has remained deeply personal while also providing an important record of Black life in New York during a transformative period. When artist and photographer Emilia Martin began exploring the stories passed down through her Polish family, she became increasingly interested in the ways history is constructed, preserved, and forgotten. Working across photography, writing, sound, and sculpture, Emilia uses multiple forms of artistic expression to explore the relationship between memory, heritage, and the stories we inherit. Growing up between her grandmother's remote farm in rural eastern Poland and the industrial coal-mining region of Silesia, Emilia experienced two very different relationships to land, labor, history, and belonging. Those contrasting environments became a foundation for her artistic practice, which draws on oral histories, myths, rituals, and objects as forms of archives and systems of knowledge. Her work also embraces absence—those fragments of cultural history that have been dismissed, forgotten, or lost—and asks what might emerge when we acknowledge that some stories can never be fully recovered. Rather than limiting herself to a single medium, Emilia allows the ideas she wants to explore and communicate to determine how she makes the work, moving freely between photography, writing, sound, and sculpture. The images became the foundation for The Anonymous Project, an evolving collection that explores the memories, relationships, and everyday moments preserved in photographs whose original subjects and stories have been lost. What began as a fascination with found photographs has grown into a much larger exploration of photography, memory, and the stories we attach to images. That interest in photography has carried throughout Shulman's work, whether through The Anonymous Project or through collaborations with photographers including Martin Parr and Omar Victor Diop. He also produced and directed I Am Martin Parr, a film exploring the life and work of the British photographer. When photographer Bill Wishner began his career more than three decades ago, his focus was music—particularly jazz. His photographs documented performances and musicians, eventually leading to his role as co-editor of Monterey Jazz Festival: 40 Legendary Years. Over time, however, his photographic interests shifted from the stage to the urban environment, where he began looking for the unexpected images hidden in the walls and surfaces of cities around the world. Beginning in 2012, Bill embraced the role of what he calls a "Visual Hunter," turning his attention to the transformative visual art and aesthetics found on urban walls. His Art of the City Wall project explores the layers, textures, shapes, and juxtapositions created by graffiti, posters, weathering, and the passage of time. Rather than simply documenting what he finds, Bill uses framing and observation to transform these fragments of the urban landscape into photographs that invite us to see familiar environments in entirely new ways. When photographer Micah Green and writer Kayla Greene chose to dedicate their talents to independent community journalism, they embraced a mission that extends far beyond reporting the day's events. Through their work producing several weekly and regional newspapers serving Baldwin County along Alabama's Gulf Coast, they combine photography, reporting, and editing to document the lives of the people and places that define their community. At a time when local journalism faces shrinking advertising revenues, declining readership, and consolidation by large media companies, they have invested in something many have written off: independent community newspapers. Their partnership demonstrates that local journalism is about far more than delivering the news. It's about creating a sense of place, preserving the stories of ordinary people, and strengthening the connections that hold communities together. A year after the Eaton Fire in Altadena upended our lives, I found myself sitting down with photographer, writer, and educator Jeffery Saddoris for a conversation that was less about photography and more about what happens when life forces you to reconsider where—and how—you want to live. When Michael Robinson Chávez first traveled to Peru with a camera in hand, he couldn't have known it would mark the beginning of a lifelong relationship with photography—and with the country that would become central to his understanding of himself. A native Californian and the son of a Peruvian mother, Chávez has spent decades building a distinguished career as a visual journalist, photographing stories across the globe with a rare combination of rigor, empathy, and clarity. Whether covering war, political upheaval, environmental crisis, or everyday life, his photographs are rooted in a deep respect for the people in front of his lens and a commitment to revealing the emotional truth within complex stories. That same depth of feeling runs through Mestizo, his long-term project on Peru and the subject of our conversation this week. When photographer Stephanie Pommez began documenting the lives of traditional midwives in the Amazon, she was drawn by a desire to understand how communities shape meaning through ritual, labor, and shared belief. Over several years, she traveled through river-dweller communities, photographing women who serve not only as caretakers and healers, but as guardians of local culture. What began as a documentary exploration of daily life gradually opened onto something more expansive—an encounter with the oral traditions and myths that run alongside the visible world. That long engagement evolved into The Enchanted Ones, a lyrical and haunting project inspired by the stories of the encantados—mythical shapeshifting beings said to inhabit the rivers and forests of the Amazon. Shot in 35mm black and white, the book moves beyond conventional documentary, embracing ambiguity, atmosphere, and the porous boundary between reality and imagination. When photographer Tawny Chatmon creates a portrait, she is doing more than arranging light and subject—she is reconstructing history. Drawing from classical European painting traditions while centering contemporary Black subjects, her work reclaims visual space that has long excluded them. Through layered textures, gold leaf, and painterly surfaces, Tawny creates images that feel both timeless and urgently present. Her portraits challenge the conventions of representation, placing children and families within compositions that evoke Renaissance and Baroque aesthetics while subverting their historical omissions. Rather than treating her subjects as symbols, she honors their individuality, dignity, and complexity.
