Ep 199.5: Symphony of Misalignment (2026/05/02)
2026/05/02
This week in anguish: - We mourn the loss of John Garrett, who exemplified what a Canuck should be. - Was lovingly constructed in small, artisinal batches and later reassembeled by experienced anguish technicians. - Reminds us, via the Goldeneyes, what a fun hockey game and cheer-forable hockey team feels like. - Finally gets down to business with an evisceration of the post-Alllvin-firing Jim Rutherford press conference that is thorough and meandering in equal parts.
Ep 199: When We Were the Good Guys (2026/03/16)
2026/03/16
This week in anguish: - We declare a unilateral temporary armistice with the present and bury our heads in the sands of time in honour of the eternal voice of your Vancouver Canucks, Jim Robson.  - And yet, there's always time to pour one out for Petey.  -We scrutinize Tyler's miserly parting words as a Canuck, and note that Conor at least threw a garland or two to the city that--...no, I can't go on like this. This is ridiculous.  - How Did We Not Know who is (are?) in cahoots with Cootes in Prince Rupert? Hark and be gladdended in the knowing with us.
This Golden Week 2: The Ninety-Ninth Percentile (2026/02/21)
2026/02/22
This golden week: - Has established for a fact that delaying the editing of a podcast is not the last little superstitious push the Olympians needed to get them across the golden goal-line.  - Sure, Claire Thompson may be known as Human ChatGPT to her teammates, but your stalwart co-Thompsons are unintimidated, since they've long been known as the Human Microfiche and the Human Disc One of Microsoft Encarta, respectively.  - How Did We Not Know that the meteorite that struck Bruderheim, Alberta, Brett Ratner (unfortunately as yet unstruck by any meteorites), and the reflection of local demographies in PWHL team theme nights would all be essential ingredients in this witch's brew of an episode.
Ep 198: Stages of Grief, Pt. II (2026/01/31)
2026/01/31
This week in anguish: - Speaks for itself.
Ep 197: Stages of Grief, Pt. I (2026/01/14)
2026/01/14
This week in anguish: - Firing madly off in all directions, various admixtures of goodbye, good riddance, and good grief are extended to Minnesota Wild legend Quinn Hughes, the culture of the team, and the powers that be who inculcated it.  - We've worked out way through denial and anger, and have swum through our familiar wallowing hole of depression. Join us next time as we attempt to collectively bargain our way to *checks notes*... acceptance? That can't be right.
This Golden Week #1 (2025/12/17)
2025/12/19
This golden week... - Is vanguarded by some pretty sweet intro music, eh? It's a section from the track "Beach Runner" off the excellent Ocean City LP by Pacific Coliseum.  - This Week in Gulls flew too close to the sun on its one and only sortie; we disavow all past anguishes and grievances and welcome This Golden Week into the Thompsopodiverse.  - Wrongs will be righted if we'red united! A warm welcome to Goldeneyes Inaugural Game Promotional Towel-Holder, more-embarassed-than-she-let-on homemade jersey-wearer, and beloved wife and daughter-in-law of the pod Rachel Rabey, here to give her boots on the ground view from the upper bowl.  - Behold genly in your eyes the outsider art jersey design that made such a stir in the concourses of power, and enjoy, for archival purposes, a more downloadable version of my apparently mind-bending magic eye secondary logo proposal.   - Friend of the friendless Abby Boreen has seized more days than any other Goldeneye yet. On the rare occasions she falters, Surrey souer Jenn Gardiner takes up the torch and lights the way while tiny Katie Chan proudly defies her stature and slays giants for the good gals.
Ep 196: This Is What I Bought Into? (2025/11/16)
2025/11/16
This week in anguish: - Was barrel-aged an extra week for no particular reason, but, since we track back our futility in this and all episodes to 1970, our analysis remains as perenially trenchant as it is petulant.  - Tristan heads to the fabric marker aisle and tries to remember what a duck looks like.  - Marvel at tales of past woes in Where Were You When? and glory days gone by in Why Are We Doing This? as the Canucks continue their supersemicentennial Quest for Cromulence.  - We learn how Abby Hoffman skated subterfugally and Justine Bailey sued supremely so that the Goldeneyes could one day...clang? Soar? Dive? We're learning, is the point.   - Honourable mention to Ardella for "whiplash / from hopes dashed", which was only not picked as the episode name for copyright concerns after it becomes the title of her slam poetry album. It got some beatnik finger snaps from The Editor, at least.
Ep 195: Silky Hands, Golden Voice (2025/11/04)
2025/11/05
This week in anguish: - Is not merely emotionally but also technically anguished, with our li'l audio recorder pitching a few micro wildcat strikes throughout the episode. The coherence of one lacuna was rescued by the producer's surely imperceptible technical wizardry, whereas in other spots we lean upon the listener's own artificial general intelligence to fill in the ums and ahs that have been lost to time.  - We can no longer ethically use the "no segments were harmed in the making of this episode" certification, as Tristan unveils such certain-to-be-repeated gems as "Who the Heck Are You?", "Why Are We Doing This?", and "Where Were You When?" - With our vaunted next-warm-body-up philosophy, it's high time to better get to know Mackenzie MacEachern. - Bear witness to our tortured history of laying out the icy red carpet for everyone else's hockey milestones.   - In space, no one can hear you screaming as we try to recap this year's team hype-up video, so don't even bother.
Ep 194: The Most Thing That Could Happen (2025/10/26)
2025/10/27
This week in anguish:   - The bruised and contused Canucks inspire us to revist Aaron Rome's ever-so-slightly-delayed hit in the harsh light of 5,249 days later.  - We map out the Bohemian past and DEL future of Lukas, by far the most Canuck of the many magnificent Reichels.  - How Did We Not Know what a can of fascinating worms would be opened via our discussion of the emptying of nets. You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.  - Tristan deems various acts treasonous and calls various people traitors, in the way that you expect and appreciate from a light-hearted hockey podcast.
TWIG Ep 1: No-Name Brand
2025/10/20
- Welcome to the first episode of This Week in Gulls (hereafter: TWIG), the PWHL Vancouver podcast that, oddly, shares a team-building philosophy with Tony Montana. First you get the name, then you get the logo, then you get the women.   -  Behold! But like, y'know, if a real person did it. The weird beak-frown can probably stay, though. - If you identify with or have affinity for one or more the following, you may be entitled to compensation after listening to this episode: the city of Buffalo, New York; the American Hockey League; Zellers; having weak sisters.  - If, for some unfathomable reason, you're not entirely sold on being a die-hard Gull-head, picture the noble future that could exist were we to enlist the services of Dame Cloudington, Duchess of Renfrew.  - We're genuinely excited about this team, but you better believe we've still gotta bushelful of buts. Audible ones!
Ep 193: Why We Fight (2025/10/09)
2025/10/09
This week in anguish: - Check, check. Test one-two.  - Sorry about the unplanned and unannounced five hundred and four day hiatus.  - In our defense, last season was something of a, how you say, mega-bummer, non? - Why we quit, why we're back, and how all roads basically just lead back to Brock. - Go Gulls!
Ep 192: Cycling Through Boys (2024/05/23)
2024/05/23
This week in anguish: - Misery loves company, so we are delighted to be joined by Canuck superfan, devoted listener, Vancouver expat, and Thunderbird grinder Alissa McArthur! - The Canucks have just concluded their third-best regular season of all time and were just one game away from the final four...so you better believe we devote significant time to talking about Troy from Richmond, Jacob from Gävle, and Nik from Moscow. - Tristan presents his cockamamie General Theory of Petey Bitterness, while Alissa drinks a bit more deeply from the cup of wisdom and sobers us again. - Hmm, important point of order: Do we actually even like playoff hockey? Won't somebody please think of the Quintin? - We're cool, we're calm, we're gonna be OK...just as long as we come up with the perfect local intro song to counterract our sometimes somnambulant starts.    Thanks for listening! This episode supports the Hockey4Youth foundation and HerosHockey.
Ep 191: Past Performance IS Indicative of Future Results (2024/05/14)
2024/05/14
This week in anguish: - The first (and almost certainly last) mid-game episode of TWiA! Crow along vaingloriously with every Brock Boeser snipe! (Even those that turn out to actually be Elias Lindholm's.) Groan plosively with every indignity visited upon our beautiful boys! Strain to hear the off-mic musings of Racquel Rabey!  - Ardella is off to Scandihoovia for the next month and bit, so applications from any prospectively scabby co-hosts are welcomed.   Thanks for listening! This episode supports the Hockey4Youth foundation and HerosHockey.
Ep 190: The Gravy Boat (2024/05/07)
2024/05/07
This week in anguish: - "Way to go boys! Never doubted you for a second," said your trusty co-hosts while hooked up to an IV drip due to perspiration-related dehydration. - When you move the goal-posts enough, everything becomes a three-pointer (Does that work as metaphor? Look, we barely even understand hockey.) - Tristan short-lists the best play-by-play calls of Pyoos Suter's series-winning goal. (Does that qualify as a pun? Probably not.)  - Time to better get to know more about the historic hardware we might be taking home this season, with our chief archivist reporting in on the Vezina, Adams, Norris, and Byng.    Thanks for listening! This episode supports the Hockey4Youth foundation and HerosHockey.
Ep 189: Turnin' Up Canucks (2024/04/28)
2024/04/29
This week in anguish: - Look, in the regular season these episode descriptions are mildly useful because you never know what vaguely Canuckian rabbit-hole we'll be crawling down to escape the indignities of the week that was, but in the playoffs? We do actually talk about the here and now, we promise. - That doesn't mean we won't still make time for an exposé on Richard Brodeur's 1982 save percentage and long-forgotten minutiae about Linden's glass-smashing hit. - Let us ape a little bit of Big Zee's sangfroid sass and go boldly together towards Game 5.   Thanks for listening! This episode supports the Hockey4Youth foundation and HerosHockey.
