Description

AIR is an interview podcast series with a different theme each episode. Created in 2017, AIR aims to be something different in the wide world of music journalism. Tired of the usual promotional fluff, host Emma Robertson invites artists, DJs, and musicians to get deep on one topic that inspires them — everything from nature, to film, to spirituality — in the hope that it inspires you, too.

AIR 087 / Jen Cardini
2026/09/30
This month, I met up with DJ, producer, and label boss Jen Cardini, for what has become an increasingly rare face to face interview, taking place at Soho House here in Berlin. A DJ for over 30 years, Jen is a master of connecting, moving dancefloors, and taking dancers on a journey, pulling from all kinds of genres and influences, never tied down by labels but always rooted in warmth and energy. For Jen, DJing and dance music in general is all about self-expression, something they discovered for the first time playing for queer parties like Le Pulp in Paris, as well as in Berlin…. This episode delves into generosity, community, and the trust built up from true self-expression. Music: "petit monstre" - Jen Cardini (2026) "August in Paris" - Shonky and Jen Cardini (2016 reissue) "The Dark, The Light" - Jen Cardini and Bozart (2023) FOLLOW AIR: Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Substack: airpodcast.substack.com/ BUY BREAKTHROUGH: https://www.lespressesdureel.com/EN/ouvrage.php?id=13352&menu=0
AIR 086 / Grace Sands live at Dimensions Festival 2025
2026/08/05
This month’s episode comes from a recording from Dimensions Festival last year, where I am lucky enough to be invited to host a series of live talks on site. You’ll find me back at the festival this year hosting talks at The Haze stage on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so please come say hello! Last year it was our deep pleasure to host a UK icon, the inimitable DJ and producer Grace Sands. What follows is a recording of our live conversation, made possible by our friends at The Mudd Show. I hope you enjoy listening and I hope to see you all back at dimensions next month. And finally some news: my book BREAKTHROUGH is out in the world! BREAKTHROUGH is an interview project I’ve been working on for the past four years, and speaking with artists about the seminal records they’ve made, from idea to production to release, and all the changes that come along with your first success. It’s been a very wild ride. The book’s final form features 20 interviews and clocks in at nearly 300 pages; I see it as a tool for musicians and artists of all kinds, but for me its also a meditation on the creative act and a refuge for makers when things get tough. If you want to buy a copy, you can order yours here: https://www.lespressesdureel.com/EN/ouvrage.php?id=13352&menu=0 Thank you to the Mudd Show for the live recording and as always to Dimensions for having me! See you in Tisno.
AIR 085 / Voices from the Lake
2026/07/01
My guests for AIR's 85th episode are none other than @donato-dozzy and @neel, also known as Voices from the Lake. Each beloved producers and DJs in their own right, Donato and Neel have been bound together by music since the earliest days of their friendship, and Voices from the Lake is the logical continuation of that union, part improvisation, part dialogue, all trust. Forged for what was meant to be a one-time-only live showcase for @mindgameslaby in Japan, their closing set would form the basis of one of the most renowned ambient techno albums, their self-titled debut Voices from the Lake. Their follow up album, simply titled II, was released last year, over a decade since the first but well worth the wait. It’s not a remake, but rather a completely new dimension that speaks to their growth as artists. In this conversation, we’re looking back at Voices from the Lake, the project’s evolution, their deep connection as friends and collaborators, and the milestones that still mean so much to them. ++ Music: "Manuark" - Voices from the Lake (2025) "Iyo" - Voices from the Lake (2012) "Ian" - Voices from the Lake (2025) ++ FOLLOW AIR: Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: airpodcast.substack.com/
AIR 084 / Laura Misch
2026/05/27
Joining me this month is saxophonist, vocalist, and producer @laura-emma-misch. A South London born musician, Laura began releasing her bedroom-produced EPs around 2017, until, feeling constricted and isolated by her recording environment, she moved her practice outdoors and into nature. The result was 2023’s Sample The Sky, her debut album produced in response to the natural world. Her 2026 album Lithic was similarly crafted in outdoor spaces, inspired by stone and thus recorded in caves and quarries around the UK, and completed with percussion made by shell and rock. The music itself likewise harnesses the wind, not only in her ethereal vocals but also in the musing breath of her saxophone. In this conversation, we talk about breath and its importance for the horn, her unique approach to music making, and the necessity of a dialogue with the natural world. ++ MUSIC "Kairos" - Laura Misch (2026) "Listen to the Sky" - Laura Misch (2023) "Echoes" - Laura Misch (2026)
AIR 083 / CCL
2026/05/06
This month we’re on episode 83 and my guest is Berlin based DJ, producer, and subglow boss CCL. Even if you’ve never seen a @ccl-url DJ set, you’ve probably listened to one of their many, many mixtapes — the consummate dreamweaver, CCL’s musical storytelling is unparalleled in its ingenuity. Unbound by genre, tempo, or style, and with a massive archive to back them up, CCL’s mixtapes are a lesson in world-building and deep sonic imagination. Their T4T mixtape A Night At the Skull Discotheque, and their NTS series Invisible Cities, which transforms an imagined city into a musical journey, have become instant classics, a perfect extension of their DJing which also seeks to explore, experiment, and express. In this conversation, we delve into CCL’s relationship to creativity, their commitment to pushing their own boundaries, and their pursuit of explosive imagination. ++ MUSIC CCL - "Plot Twist" (2024) CCL - "The Plot Thickens" ft. AIR 082 / Chris Liebing
2026/03/25
This month’s guest needs little introduction.... Welcome to the show German DJ and producer @Chris-Liebing. A DJ first and foremost, Chris has grown his craft playing on the world’s biggest and best techno stages, all the while, learning to produce alongside collaborators like Ralf Hildenbeutel and Andre Walter, and putting out a steady stream of work: 2003’s Evolution, 2018’s Burn Slow, 2021’s AnotherDay, and a collaborative project with Speedy J… Keen to push himself further and distill a sound made by his hands only, his new album EVOLVER is technically his very first fully fledged solo project, at nearly three decades in the game. In this conversation, we’re diving deep into EVOLVER, self-exploration, and the siren song of solo creativity. AIR 081 / D'Julz
2026/02/25
This month I’m so pleased to be joined by French DJ, producer, and label boss Julien Veniel, also known as @djulz. With a career spanning over three decades and across multiple cities, D’Julz began playing parties in Paris, before moving to New York City, inspired and influenced by the music scene and residual disco culture that still permeated clubs like Sound Factory. He returned to Paris,, DJing a mix of sounds from the fundamental cities of house and techno. As a producer, his style supports his DJing: his releases are best known as tools for the dancefloor, and he’s amassed a dedicated following for both his labels, Bass Culture, and JV Recordings. Ahead of the release of his new album, JV, I sat down with Julien to talk production and its role in DJing, and the evolution of his boundless creativity. AIR 080 / Egyptian Lover
2026/01/28
This month’s episode of AIR is our 80th episode! Can you believe! I’m very pleased to welcome Greg Broussard, better known as Egyptian Lover. Born in LA, Broussard’s musical journey began when he started making mixtapes with his friends in high school, and learning to mix from his older brother. His skills as DJ eventually lead him to join the iconic party collective Uncle Jamm’s Army, whose records were some of the earliest West Coast electro rap releases. A true pioneer, Broussard developed a signature style that blends his freaked out mixing, charismatic rap and lyricism, and of course his beloved 808 drum machine — a piece he picked up in the 80s and hasn’t put down since. When Egyptian Lover plays out, it’s an experience like no other… And in this episode, we’re exploring the creativity of a true originator. ++ MUSIC "Just 4 U (Instrumental)" - Egyptian Lover "Dial a Freak" - Uncle Jamm's Army + Egyptian Lover "Egypt Egypt" - Egyptian Lover ++ FOLLOW AIR Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: airpodcast.substack.com/
AIR 079 / Kia live at Dimensions Festival 2025
2025/10/31
Bringing back a bit of summer with the first recorded interview from this past @dimensionsfestival in Tisno, Croatia. This was my second year hosting talks at the lovely Haze stage and the first guest in our little series is Australian DJ and Animalia label boss, @kia-sydney. A longtime lover of dance music who started DJing in 2015, Kia’s sets travel from dark and driving to playful and euphoric with complete ease — she’s an artist who refuses to limit herself, and her sound only benefits from not being boxed in, while her label’s exports are as adventurous and exciting as she is. More than just a creative outlet, music is a form of personal expression for Kia, and she is an expert in crafting not only DJ performances, but mixes that are often akin to a diary. As always for these live talks, rather than honing in on one topic, we’re exploring each artist’s journey and the musical pursuits that make them who they are.
AIR 078 / rRoxymore
2025/09/24
A producer and live performer who has been exploring dance music for more than a decade, @rroxymore's sound is immersive, covering techno, hip hop, house, synthwork, new age, and beyond. Since her first forays into production in her native France, she touched down in Berlin, where the world of music opened up for her even further, and her most recent release, 2025’s #JugglingDualities, was her most honest and far-reaching album to date. In this conversation, rRoxymore and I discuss the musician’s journey to finding her voice in her early days, and reaffirming that voice with her latest productions. ++ Music: "Moodified" - rRoxymore (2025) "Bonded for Eternity" - rRoxymore (2025) "Water Stain" - rRoxymore (2022) ++ FOLLOW AIR Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: airpodcast.substack.com/
AIR 077 / Adam Wiltzie
2025/08/06
This month I’m pleased to welcome producer and composer Adam Wiltzie, best known for his projects @starsofthelid, and A Winged Victory for the Sullen (@awvfts). After a chance meeting during university, Brian McBride and @adambryanbaumwiltzie formed Stars of the Lid in Austin, Texas in 1992. Their first album Music for Nitrous Oxide, a monolith of drone and extraterrestrial soundscapes, was a force of nature — and a tribute to the best kind of artistic collaboration. The duo went on to make several other successful albums, becoming of the minimalist and ambient genre, until Brian’s passing in 2023. In this conversation, Adam and I look back on Music for Nitrous Oxide, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, the swings of collaborating with not only Brian, but A Winged Victory’s Dustin O’Halloran, and the impact of grief and memory on creativity. ++ MUSIC "Adamord" - Stars of the Lid (2025 remaster) "Atomos VI" - A Winged Victory for the Sullen (2014) "Buried At Westwood Memorial Park, In An Unmarked Grave, To The Left Of Walter Matthau" - Adam Wiltzie (2024) FOLLOW AIR: Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: https://airpodcast.substack.com/
AIR 076 / Huerta
2025/07/02
This month’s episode, which welcomes Berlin based, LA bred producer and DJ, @SteveHuerta. Huerta moved to Berlin over a decade ago, seeking out the same dancefloor pleasures as all who make the pilgrimage to Berlin. With a central goal of making dance music, Steve cut his teeth producing and releasing on indie tech house labels, finding joy in creation. In the years since, despite breaking through with LPs like Junipero and TV Slang, a homegrown label called Leizure, and DJ sets that take him to festivals and dancefloors around the world, his joy continues to stay rooted in expression and creativity; the simple pleasures of making and playing music. In this episode, we look back on a career spent persevering in an overly saturated Berlin music scene, the challenges of trying to make it as an artist, and the dedication required to stay afloat as a musician in 2025. ++ MUSIC: "Ruff Groove" - Huerta (2020) "All Wild Things Are Shy" - Huerta (2020) "Safe Passage to Toco" - Huerta FOLLOW AIR: Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: airpodcast.substack.com/
AIR 075 / Branko
2025/05/28
For this month’s episode, I’m joined by Portuguese producer and label boss João Barbosa, better known as @Brankoofficial. Perhaps best known for his work as a founding member of kuduro meets techno group @BurakaSomSistema, and his label @Enchufada Records, which was born in 2006 as a creative platform for the band’s many outputs. These days, Branko is focusing on his solo project, which continues to celebrate global club music and collaborations from not only all over the world, but all across the musical spectrum. For episode 75, we’re taking a look back at Enchufada’s history, from its days as a hub for the band to its diverse explorations in global club music. Special thank you to @thehortonbrothers who worked on the sound for this month's episode! ++ MUSIC Branko - "NAFÉ" (feat. ÉLLÀH) Buraka Som Sistema - "Hangover" (Bababa) Branko - "On Top" (feat. AIR 074 / Marcel Dettmann
2025/04/30
Here at AIR, we kicked off festival season in with Sonar Lisboa, the little sister to the famed Barcelona festival, which took place in early April this year and featured acts like Max Cooper, Jennifer Cardini, Juliana Huxtable, and this month’s esteemed guest, @MarcelDettmann. A techno veteran whose name is synonymous with big room sound, Marcel recently debuted a new live set, his first ever foray into live performance, the result of a pandemic spent toiling away in the studio and crafting his landmark album Fear of Programming, which formed the foundation for his live act. At Sonar Lisboa, he presented a new version of his project, which he calls My Own Shadow, a mix of his own productions, field recordings, vocal elements, and on the fly craftsmanship. Marcel and I sat down together in Lisbon to discuss his new live set and the creativity behind it, and how his musical and personal life is shifting over years. A big thanks to the team at Sonar Lisboa for the invite to this year’s edition! ++ MUSIC: "Linux" - Marcel Dettmann (2013) "Water" - Marcel Dettmann ft. After stints in Leeds and Manchester, he started working for London venue @picklefactorylondon when it launched as a sister site to the now defunct Oval Space in 2014. In this episode, we look at his life as a programmer and the challenges of club culture in 2025. ++ Music: Glowing Glisses - "On The Bridge (Larry Heards After Dark Dub Mix)" North Avenue - "Solutions (Instrumental)" Ross Couch - "Groove On (Original Mix)" ++ FOLLOW AIR: Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: airpodcast.substack.com/
