Suicide or Murder? The Philadelphia Case That Won’t Stay Closed- Ellen Greenberg Update
2026/10/07
Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as we return to the deeply controversial case of Ellen Greenberg, the 27-year-old Philadelphia teacher whose death has continued to raise questions more than a decade later. We first covered Ellen’s case in Episode 90, examining the circumstances surrounding her 2011 death and the controversial ruling that her multiple stab wounds were the result of suicide. Now, we’re back with an update episode to revisit the case, discuss the latest developments, and take another look at the questions that refuse to go away. Ellen was found dead inside her Philadelphia apartment after suffering numerous stab wounds. Her death was initially investigated as a homicide before being reclassified as suicide—a determination that has remained fiercely disputed by Ellen’s family and many who have followed the case. We discuss the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office's 32-page review, which continued to support the suicide determination, as well as the legal battle between Ellen's family and the City of Philadelphia. We also examine the settlement that included a monetary payment and an agreement to reexamine aspects of the case. As we revisit the evidence, we discuss the forensic findings, the circumstances surrounding Ellen's death, and the various questions that have continued to fuel debate over whether the official ruling adequately explains what happened. What has changed since we first covered Ellen's case in Episode 90? What questions remain unanswered? And does the latest examination of the case provide meaningful answers—or raise even more questions? This is an update to a case we've been following for years, and one that continues to demonstrate just how complicated and controversial death investigations can become. If you're interested in true crime podcasts, Ellen Greenberg, Philadelphia true crime, true crime updates, suspicious deaths, forensic evidence, medical examiner investigations, disputed suicide cases, homicide investigations, and unsolved mysteries, make sure you listen to Episode 90 first—and then join us for this latest update. DNA, Doubt & a Death Row Execution- Marcellus Williams
2026/10/01
Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they dive into the deeply controversial case of Marcellus Williams, a Missouri death row inmate whose execution in 2024 sparked intense debate surrounding DNA evidence, wrongful convictions, racial bias, eyewitness testimony, and the death penalty. In this episode, we examine the murder case that ultimately sent Williams to death row and the evidence that continued to raise questions decades later. We take a closer look at the role of DNA testing, disputed forensic evidence, eyewitness identification, and jailhouse informants—and explore how each played a role in a case that remained fiercely contested right up until the execution. We also examine the legal battles surrounding Williams and the efforts to challenge his conviction, including questions about evidence that investigators said did not conclusively connect him to the crime. With questions about the reliability of testimony and the handling of evidence, the case raises larger concerns about how wrongful convictions can occur and whether the justice system can adequately correct them. The conversation goes beyond the individual case as we explore capital punishment in America, racial disparities in the criminal justice system, death row, prosecutorial discretion, forensic evidence, and the possibility of executing an innocent person. How reliable is eyewitness testimony? What happens when DNA evidence raises questions about a conviction? How much weight should be given to jailhouse informants? And when a death sentence has already been handed down, how should the justice system respond when questions about guilt remain? The Marcellus Williams case forces us to confront some of the most difficult questions surrounding the U.S. criminal justice system and the death penalty—and whether there is ever a point when uncertainty should be enough to stop an execution. If you're interested in true crime podcasts, wrongful convictions, death row cases, DNA evidence, criminal justice reform, capital punishment, murder trials, and controversial executions, this is an episode you won't want to miss. *Please note all opinions in the show are our own and solely in regards to the specific case we are discussing in this episode* We made a one stop shop for all the Eye for an Eye links our listeners might want to check out whether its where to listen, our merch shop, all of our socials, our email, or ways to support the show,  we’d love for you to visit the link below!  https://msha.ke/eyeforeyepod/ Tired of Ads? The Torso Killer- Through the Looking Glass- Inside a Serial Killer Cold Case with Peter Vronsky
2026/09/24
Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa for a chilling conversation with historian and author Peter Vronsky, as we explore the dark world of serial killers, cold cases, and the terrifying legacy of Richard Cottingham, known as the Torso Killer. Peter, a Toronto-based historian and author who has spent years researching serial murder, takes us deep into his work surrounding the Cottingham case and the broader phenomenon of serial killers who terrorized communities throughout the 1970s and 1980s. But Peter's connection to this subject isn't purely academic. He shares the deeply unsettling story of his own encounter with a torso murder victim in 1979—an experience that would leave a lasting impression and ultimately become part of his lifelong fascination with understanding serial killers and their crimes. In this episode, we examine why the 1970s and 1980s became such a notorious era for serial murder, how investigators identified patterns between seemingly unrelated killings, and why so many cases remained unsolved for decades. Peter draws from his experiences researching and interviewing serial killers to discuss behavioral patterns, psychopathy, and what investigators can—and cannot—learn from studying these offenders. We also explore the evolution of serial killer investigations and how advances in DNA technology, forensic science, databases, and investigative techniques have transformed cold cases. But even with modern technology, countless victims remain unidentified and countless cases remain unsolved. Peter and Matthew also discuss the importance of independent investigations, the challenges surrounding law enforcement cooperation, and why revisiting old cases can sometimes uncover connections investigators missed decades earlier. And then there's the question that always fascinates true crime audiences: What actually makes someone a psychopath? We discuss Peter's experience with psychopathy testing and the complicated reality behind the labels frequently used to describe serial killers. From the Torso Killer and Richard Cottingham to cold cases, serial killer psychology, psychopathy, forensic investigation, and the evolution of true crime, this conversation offers a fascinating look at how we try to understand some of the most disturbing crimes in history. If you're fascinated by true crime podcasts, serial killers, cold cases, unsolved murders, criminal psychology, forensic science, and the history of serial murder, this is an episode you won't want to miss. A Mother’s Last Ride, a Family’s Fight for Justice- Christina Spicuzza
2026/09/01
Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they take an especially personal look at the heartbreaking case of Christina Spicuzza, a Pittsburgh-area mother of four whose life was tragically cut short while working as an Uber driver. In 2022, Christina accepted a ride in the Monroeville area—never knowing it would be her last. What followed was a horrifying kidnapping and murder that devastated her family, friends, and the Pittsburgh community. In this episode, we discuss the investigation, the evidence that led authorities to Calvin Crew, and the criminal case that ultimately resulted in convictions for first-degree murder, robbery, kidnapping, gun charges, and tampering with evidence. We also examine the difficult questions surrounding Crew himself, including his history of childhood violence and neglect, his reported intellectual and social challenges, and the defense's argument that he had fallen through society's cracks. At the same time, we confront the devastating reality of Christina's final moments and the impact her death left on the people who loved her. The episode takes an especially emotional turn as we discuss Christina's family's decision to ask prosecutors not to pursue the death penalty—choosing instead life in prison without parole, in accordance with Christina's religious beliefs. We reflect on what that decision says about forgiveness, faith, justice, and the unimaginable strength required to face the person responsible for taking your loved one away. This is more than another true crime story for us. Christina's case hits close to home as we are from the same hometown, making this one of the most difficult and meaningful conversations we've had on the podcast. If you listen to true crime podcasts, follow Pittsburgh true crime, or are interested in criminal investigations, courtroom trials, victim impact stories, and the difficult questions surrounding justice and punishment, this is an episode you won't want to miss. The Last Pill: Mac Miller, Fentanyl & a Tragic Chain of Death- Mac Miller
2026/08/25
Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they take a deep dive into the tragic death of Pittsburgh music icon Mac Miller, whose life was cut short by a drug overdose in September 2018 at just 26 years old. In this emotional true crime podcast episode, we explore Mac Miller's connection to Pittsburgh's legendary music scene and the stories surrounding artists, producers, and figures who helped shape the city's hip-hop culture. We also discuss the haunting phenomenon known as the 27 Club and the heartbreaking reality of talented young musicians whose lives have been lost far too soon. But Mac's death wasn't simply a story of addiction. We examine the criminal case surrounding the counterfeit pills that ultimately contained fentanyl, tracing the deadly supply chain that led to Miller's fatal overdose. We discuss how counterfeit prescription pills can look legitimate while concealing potentially lethal substances—and the devastating consequences that can follow. The conversation also examines the prosecution of Steven Walter, who was sentenced to 17.5 years in federal prison for his role in distributing the counterfeit pills connected to Miller's death. We explore the difficult questions surrounding criminal responsibility, drug distribution, fentanyl, and where accountability should fall when drugs move through a complex chain of suppliers and dealers. How much responsibility belongs to the person who sells the drugs? What about the people higher up the supply chain? And can the criminal justice system ever truly hold someone accountable for a death when the person who ultimately supplied the drugs may never have known exactly what was in them? From Mac Miller's Pittsburgh roots and the 27 Club to fentanyl, counterfeit pills, drug trafficking, and the criminal justice system, this episode examines the tragedy from both a deeply personal and legal perspective. If you're a fan of true crime podcasts, celebrity true crime, Pittsburgh history, music industry stories, drug crime, fentanyl cases, criminal investigations, and high-profile overdose cases, this is an episode you won't want to miss. From Gang Leader to Cop: Inside Miami’s Cocaine Wars with Lt. Raul Diaz- Interview with Lieutenant Raul J. Diaz and Sean Oliver
2026/08/11
Join Lisa, Matt, and Jules for a gripping conversation with Lieutenant Raul J. Diaz and Sean Oliver, co-authors of Killing the Lieutenant, a firsthand account of crime, corruption, and survival during Miami’s notorious cocaine wars. Raul Diaz’s story sounds like something out of a crime movie—but it’s real. After immigrating to the United States from Cuba, Diaz went from being involved in gang life to becoming a police officer and eventually one of the law enforcement officers fighting some of Miami’s most dangerous criminals during the explosive drug era of the 1980s. In this episode, Diaz takes us inside a Miami where cocaine trafficking was exploding, violent criminals were flooding the streets, and police were often working without the technology, resources, and forensic tools available today. He shares what it was like confronting powerful criminal organizations and operating undercover in an era when the risks were enormous and backup wasn't always guaranteed. We also explore the human cost of a career spent fighting violent crime. Diaz opens up about the relentless stress, physical and mental toll, and health problems that followed years on the front lines of Miami's war on drugs. Sean Oliver discusses how his collaboration with Diaz began and what went into transforming Diaz’s experiences into Killing the Lieutenant. Together, they explain why telling the personal stories behind the badges and headlines was so important—and why the human perspective can make a crime memoir far more powerful than simply recounting the cases. The conversation also takes aim at the way popular culture and media have romanticized notorious criminals, including figures like Griselda Blanco, and asks what gets lost when criminals become celebrities. We discuss the difference between the mythology surrounding Miami’s cocaine era and the reality experienced by the police officers, informants, victims, and communities caught in the middle. Finally, we reflect on Diaz’s legacy and his work with CENTAC 26, examining the impact of his career and the sacrifices made by the officers who helped take on Miami’s drug trade during one of the most dangerous periods in the city’s history. If you're a fan of true crime podcasts, Miami cocaine wars, organized crime, drug trafficking, police memoirs, undercover investigations, criminal history, and real-life crime stories, this is an episode you won't want to miss. The Co-Ed Killer: Inside the Disturbing Mind of Ed Kemper - Ed Kemper
2026/08/03
Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they take a chilling deep dive into the life and crimes of one of America’s most notorious serial killers: Ed Kemper, the “Co-Ed Killer.” In this episode, we explore the disturbing story of a man whose horrific crimes were matched by his remarkable ability to articulate his thoughts and seemingly understand the gravity of what he had done. From his deeply troubled childhood and early criminal behavior to the murders that ultimately made him infamous, we examine the events that shaped Kemper's path toward becoming a serial killer. We discuss Kemper's reported mental health diagnosis, his disturbing relationship with his mother, and the murders of multiple young women before turning to the shocking killings of his mother and her friend. How could someone commit such horrific acts while simultaneously providing such detailed insight into his own thoughts and behavior? The conversation also dives into one of the most difficult questions surrounding violent crime: What does it actually mean to be legally insane? We examine Kemper's trial, his sentencing, his cooperation with law enforcement, and the conflicting perspectives surrounding his mental state. Was Ed Kemper truly unable to understand right from wrong—or was he fully aware of what he was doing? And when someone can calmly explain their actions after committing unimaginable violence, where does mental illness end and criminal responsibility begin? We explore the complicated intersection of serial killers, psychology, mental illness, criminal investigations, and the insanity defense, while confronting the uncomfortable reality that understanding a killer's mind doesn't necessarily explain—or excuse—their actions. No Ass, No Acquittal- The Karen Read Trial
2026/06/23
Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they take a deep dive into one of the most polarizing true crime cases in recent memory: the death of Boston police officer John O'Keefe and the murder trial of Karen Read. Did Karen Read deliberately strike O'Keefe with her SUV and leave him to die in the snow? Or was she framed as part of a larger cover-up designed to protect powerful insiders? In a case filled with conflicting testimony, disputed forensic evidence, questionable investigative tactics, and endless speculation, separating fact from fiction has become nearly impossible. In this episode, we break down the competing theories surrounding O'Keefe's death, examining witness statements, digital evidence, timelines, and the forensic findings that have fueled heated debates across the true crime community. We discuss the intense media scrutiny that transformed this trial into a national obsession and explore how internet sleuths, podcasts, and social media have shaped public perception of guilt and innocence. The conversation also tackles uncomfortable but necessary questions about police accountability, the "blue wall of silence," and whether loyalty within law enforcement can sometimes stand in the way of the truth. Could investigative mistakes and tunnel vision explain the inconsistencies in the case, or do the unanswered questions point to something much more troubling? As we review the many scenarios presented throughout the investigation, we grapple with the reality that proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt is often far more complicated than it appears. With allegations of corruption, claims of a cover-up, and no shortage of unanswered questions, the Karen Read case remains one of the most fascinating and controversial legal battles of our time. If you're obsessed with true crime podcasts, unsolved mysteries, courtroom drama, forensic evidence, and high-profile murder cases that leave you questioning everything, this episode is one you won't want to miss. Murdaugh's Second Chance: Did Power Corrupt Justice?- Murdaugh Update
2026/06/01
Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they dive into the latest shocking twist in one of the most infamous true crime cases in recent history—the granting of a new trial for convicted killer Alex Murdaugh. Once found guilty of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, in a case that captivated the nation, Murdaugh is now seeking another chance in court. But this isn't just a story about murder. It's a story about power, privilege, political influence, and a legal dynasty that controlled a corner of South Carolina for generations. In this episode, we examine the allegations that helped secure Murdaugh's retrial, including claims that former court clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors while allegedly pursuing a tell-all book and media opportunities connected to the case. We explore how these accusations have reignited debate about whether justice was truly served—or whether the system itself became compromised. The conversation goes beyond the courtroom as we unpack the extraordinary influence wielded by the Murdaugh family for decades and ask a difficult question: Would an average defendant ever receive the same opportunities and legal advantages? We also discuss how true crime documentaries, podcasts, social media, and internet sleuths have transformed modern criminal investigations and high-profile trials. Has public scrutiny improved accountability, or has it complicated the pursuit of justice? This episode explores the intersection of wealth, corruption, media influence, and the American justice system in a case that continues to raise more questions than answers. If you're fascinated by true crime podcasts, courtroom drama, criminal investigations, legal scandals, and the Murdaugh family saga, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Savage vs. Civilized: A Psychologist’s Fall from Power to Prison...and Back- Paul Smith Interview
2026/05/11
Join Lisa & Matt as we sit down with Paul, a former clinical psychologist whose life took a shocking turn from running a thriving private practice to serving time in federal prison for healthcare fraud. Get your copy of Paul's book 'Cruel and Unusual Punishment: A Memoir of the Psychological Realities of Federal Prison' here: https://amzn.to/3QHVs4c Paul shares how he built a successful psychology practice between 2007 and 2011 before everything unraveled, leading to his conviction and incarceration. Drawing from his powerful book, he explores the concept of “savage vs. civilized,” revealing how quickly societal norms can break down when survival instincts take over. We dive deep into his firsthand experiences navigating the federal prison system—from solitary confinement and unexpected transfers to the harsh realities inmates faced during COVID-19. Paul opens up about the unspoken rules of prison life, including how dominance and intimidation shape daily interactions and determine survival. In one striking story, Paul recounts a childhood moment on a farm where he learned the hard way asserting dominance can mean the difference between vulnerability and control. He shares how, despite initially trying to avoid conflict, he was forced to adapt quickly in situations that challenged his place within the prison hierarchy. This episode also explores bigger-picture conversations around criminal justice reform, questioning whether the system prioritizes punishment over rehabilitation. We discuss the urgent need for meaningful work, education, and reentry programs that can help break cycles of crime and give individuals a real second chance. If you’re into true crime podcasts, white-collar crime stories, prison survival insights, and deep psychological perspectives, this episode offers a rare, inside look you won’t hear anywhere else. We explore the challenges investigators face when dealing with wealthy, well-connected individuals, and how systemic corruption within the justice system can blur the lines between truth and protection. We also discuss the intense difficulty of selecting an impartial jury in such a widely publicized case, where media coverage and public opinion run deep. As we unpack the recent conviction of Alec Murdaugh, we reflect on what this case means for accountability among the powerful and whether justice can truly be served when influence runs so deep. We also dive into the broader implications for reopening and investigating historical family crimes that may have long been buried. If you’re obsessed with true crime, unsolved mysteries, courtroom drama, and deep dives into real-life criminal cases, this episode is one you won’t want to miss. Vanished at Sea: The Amy Bradley Mystery- Amy Bradley
2026/04/27
Join Lisa, Matt and Jules as we cover the most chilling and perplexing unsolved disappearances at sea—the case of 23-year-old Amy Bradley. In 1998, Amy vanished without a trace from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, leaving behind more questions than answers. In this episode, we break down the timeline of events and explore the leading theories: Did Amy accidentally fall overboard? Did she leave the ship voluntarily? Or could something far more sinister have happened—like being smuggled off the ship? We also dive into the investigative challenges surrounding the case, including the lack of passenger tracking systems at the time and the overwhelming complexity of searching a massive cruise ship filled with thousands of people. This case continues to haunt investigators and Amy’s loved ones decades later—and we want to know what you think happened. 🎧 Don’t forget to like, rate, review, and subscribe to Eye for an Eye so you never miss an episode. Behind the Screen: The Twisted Truth of “The Unknown Number”- Lauryn Licari
2026/04/20
Join Lisa, Matt, and Jules as we dive deep into the disturbing case featured in the Netflix documentary The Unknown Number—a chilling true crime story centered around cyberbullying, deception, and a shocking betrayal. A teen girl and her boyfriend face relentless harassment from an unknown caller, with months of psychological torment pushing them to their limits. As police begin to investigate, what starts as a mysterious case of cyberstalking quickly unravels into something far more disturbing—leading to a revelation that completely upends everything they thought they knew. In this episode, we unpack the haunting case of Lauryn Licari , a 13-year-old girl targeted in a calculated online harassment campaign. We break down the investigation, analyze the digital evidence, and explore the shocking possibility that the person behind it all was hiding in plain sight. Our discussion also takes a critical look at the documentary itself—questioning its authenticity, what may have been left out, and how the story was framed. We dive into the psychological complexity of the perpetrators alleged role, exploring potential motives, manipulation, and the long-lasting emotional impact on the victims. Beyond the case, we reflect on the real-world dangers of cyberbullying and the importance of community awareness, accountability, and intervention in protecting vulnerable individuals. If you’re into true crime podcasts, real-life mysteries, documentary deep dives, and cases that make your skin crawl, this is one episode you won’t want to miss.
