New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge spoke to the media at a press conference in Tampa this week, and he was asked about the addition of Juan Soto, where he’d like to bat, and how his toe is feeling. Stacey and Steve react to some of Judge’s statements, including a soundbite in which he discusses how he likes to pick the brains of his teammates, pitchers included. Then, an article about DJ LeMahieu on The Athletic talked about how LeMahieu prepared for 2024 after a not-so-stellar 2023 in which he struggled for most of the season. According to the article, the veteran infielder only took a few days off after the season ended before he got back to work. Aaron Boone and Aaron Judge both praised LeMahieu and have high hopes for him. Stacey and Steve discuss if it’s too soon to give LeMahieu the leadoff spot (as Boone said in the offseason) and wonder if he can have a bounce-back season. The New York Yankees were no doubt disappointed in the performance of Giancarlo Stanton in 2023—so was Stanton. He reported to camp noticeably thinner, hoping for a resurgence in 2024, but how realistic is it to expect? Stacey and Steve discuss their expectations when it comes to Stanton. The New York Yankees held an in-person press conference on Monday to re-introduce Juan Soto to the media—his first one was a Zoom call. In the press conference, Soto talked about many things, including his impending free agency, the Yankees’ possible 2024 lineup, playing at Yankee Stadium and playing with Aaron Judge, and what he can learn from Judge. Stacey and Steve break it down for you. Then, Clarke Schmidt hopes to build on his 2023 campaign in 2024. He said he changed some things in the offseason, including his offseason workouts, and that he’s working on his curveball and slider while also hoping to incorporate his changeup more in 2024. The New York Yankees are in Tampa for Spring Training, and one of the guys everyone has their eyes on is Carlos Rodon. After a disastrous 2023, the lefty is looking to rebound and become the reliable number two starter who signed up to be. Well, it seems he’s taking steps toward that goal. According to the people down in camp, like pitching coach Matt Blake, Rodon is already throwing harder than he was at this time last year. He’s also trimmed down, and they figured out some of the pitch delivery problems Rodon was plagued by in 2023. Stacey and Steve discuss the importance of these developments but are sure to remind everyone that he hasn’t actually pitched in a game yet. The New York Yankees pitchers and catchers have reported to Tampa, and there are already injuries to discuss. Would it be Yankees’ Spring Training without at least one injury? Aaron Boone spoke to the media in Tampa and let them know that Scott Effross, who was recovering from Tommy John surgery, had a back problem crop up in the fall, and he elected to have surgery for that injury in early December. Boone says Effross is expected back in the summer. Next, Jose Trevino injured his calf while training during the offseason, and he has a strain. Both players are already working their way back, and Boone said to expect Trevino to miss the first couple of weeks of Spring Training games. Then, Lou Trivino, who was non-tendered by the Yankees just a little while ago, showed up to camp and reportedly signed a one-year deal with the club worth $1.5M with performance incentives and a 2025 club option. Trivino is also working his way back from Tommy John surgery and is expected to come back sometime in the summer. And finally, the Yankees traded RHP prospect Joshua Quezada for LHP reliever Clayton Andrews. The New York Yankees named Anthony Volpe their starting shortstop in 2023. After a mixed bag of a first season, Volpe sat down with the YES Network, talked about his rookie year, and how he’s preparing for his sophomore season as Yankees shortstop.
