At five I told my dad, “When I grow up I am going to become a marine scientist.” I pursued my dream and went to college where I graduated as a Marine Biologist and later continued my graduate studies until I got a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences with emphasis in Biological Oceanography. My passion for my career had brought me to be a very successful scientist in this field. Since I was very little my parents discovered that my learning abilities were astonishing but that was not all. Later they also discovered that I could see and hear things that no one else could. All this seemed to be tied up with the aftermath of a near-death experience (NDE) where I drowned at the age of two. Not long after, I started to communicate with Beings of Light who have guided me through a journey of miracles, not just around the world but also through the barriers of time. With them I have been able to access past life experiences of myself and others, and future events. As I grew up and remembered my drowning, I could never get away from the question, “How could I have seen my body lifeless if I was still alive?” This experience made it clear to me that there was an existence beyond the body. In this Remaster episode I talk to Dr. Alan Hugenot. We talk about his Near Death Experience and his book The Death Experience: What it is like when you die. His book describes what you will experience as you die. Giving details of the death process and your journey into the afterlife based on the author's own Near-Death experience where he died, went out-of-body into the afterlife, and returned to a second life in the same body. This week I’m talking to Richard Estep. He is a paramedic and paranormal investigator. We discuss his experiences as a paranormal investigator and his books detailing the many places he has witnessed extraordinary events. We focus on his book 'The Devil’s Coming To Get Me, The Haunting of Malvern Manor'. Malvern Manor has been many things over the course of its long life. In the late 1800s it was a hotel catering to travelers and businessmen; then it was converted into a rest home for the sick and infirm; and finally, it became a privately-owned care facility, providing a home for the physically and mentally challenged of six counties. It was often the last refuge for those suffering from alcoholism, drug addiction, and severe behavioral disorders. Long after the building closed its doors for the final time, many people claim that some of those residents never left. Now a magnet for paranormal investigators, it is said that the abandoned rooms and hallways of Malvern Manor are haunted by the restless spirits of those who once called it home. In this episode, I look at the Bangs sisters, two of the most famous spirit mediums working in Chicago in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Lizzie and May Bangs became especially well known for their “precipitated” spirit portraits: images said to appear on prepared canvases during sittings, rather than being painted in the ordinary way before the audience’s eyes. The episode focuses on who the sisters were, how their portrait sittings were described, and why the paintings became such an important part of American Spiritualist culture. I examine the methods later associated with their work, including the use of framed canvases, window light, and controlled viewing conditions, and I discuss why these portraits were treated as something more than séance curiosities. They were framed, preserved, displayed, and compared with photographs of the dead, which gave them a lasting place in Spiritualist collections. I also spend time on the pictures themselves as physical objects. Did they look like ordinary oil paintings? The historical descriptions suggest something more unusual. Later writers and museum accounts often describe the Bangs portraits as smooth in finish, with little or no visible brushwork, rich color, and an appearance closer to softly blended portraiture than to heavily worked oil paint. Some accounts compared the effect to airbrushing. The episode also covers specific surviving examples, including portraits linked to Queen Victoria and to Emily and Rose Carson in the Camp Chesterfield collection. Just as important, I look at reports from sitters who said the finished image resembled the deceased closely, sometimes down to details such as beard style, jewelry, or coloring.
