7 Years 344 Episodes - Thank you and goodnight
2025/02/25
After 7 Years and 344 Episodes it is time to say:  Thank you and goodnight  Today - February 25th 2025 - marks the seventh anniversary since the first episode of this podcast went live to the world on February 25th 2018 When I first launched the podcast I was advised that the vast majority of new podcast launches don't make it beyond episode seven. So to have reached 344 episodes in seven years of podcasting seems like a reasonable achievement. It also feels like the perfect time to draw halt to the Better Presentations More Sales podcast I started listening to podcasts around 2014 and I remember one of the shows I listened to was a social media marketing podcast hosted by Chris Marr up in Scotland. On one of his episodes the guest was a chap called Pete Matthew who revealed that he was from Penzance in Cornwall. Not too far from me in Truro and the first time I've heard anyone from Cornwall on a business podcast. Pete revealed on the episode that he'd been podcasting himself for quite a number of years. Knowing I needed some help to get started with podcasting I contacted Pete. He generously gave me his time back in the summer of 2016 and eventually after much procrastination I finally launched the podcast in February 2018.  Ironically Chris Marr would end up being a guest on my show in 2024. The first 78 episodes were without guests before I worked out how to use Zoom and I interviewed Claire Boscq Scott from Jersey who I met sitting next to at a seminar at the London Business Show in 2019. Juanita Wheeler from Australia was my final and 130th guest. I do intend to return with a new podcast linked to presenting skills sometime maybe in the autumn but until then I'm very much focused on developing my on demand presentation and sales pitch training courses. I would like to say a few thank you's to all the people who made this podcast run for as long as it did. Firstly Pete Matthew who provided me with the knowledge and encouragement. My daughter Beth who edited most of the first year or two episodes Her friend Lauren who provided the voice introduction for the first batch of episodes My son Jim who provided technical support when I first set up all the recording kit and his friend Robert who created the podcast logos The 130 guests who have appeared on the show It often felt like I was getting a one-to-one coaching masterclass so I'm very grateful for them sharing their insights, advice and expertise. And finally you the listeners of the show I can't believe it's been seven years - I’ve had a fantastic time and I will be back. So until then enjoy presenting and speaking and remember don't put too many words on your slides! I can help you transform your business presentations, create and convert sales opportunities and win more sales pitches. 5 Top Public Speaking Tips with Juanita Wheeler
2025/02/18
Public Speaking is a key skill for entrepreneurs.  In this episode speaking and presenting specialist Juanita Wheeler shares 5 top public speaking tips  Juanita is the founder of Full & Frank and helps executives, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and changemakers to develop and deliver high impact presentations, worthy of their great ideas.  Juanita’s five top tips include:  Don't speak unless you have decided what your strategic objective/outcome for your speaking or presenting opportunity is.  Prepare, prepare and prepare. If you don't prepare you are likely to be nervous and risk not being as good as you would hope to be. Take preparation seriously. Ted X speakers devote hours and hours of time to preparation and start five months before the day.  Memorising and rehearsing or not the same thing. Nothing beats authenticity – when you deliver your presentation or pitch be your passionate and informed self.  Start! - so many would be presenters and speakers simply wait too long to get started thinking that they need to be almost perfect before they get going You can find Juanita at https://fullandfrank.com which is where you can find Juanita’s free guides and sign up to her newsletter  And on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/juanitawheeler/ If you are interested in trialling for free my on-demand course ‘Transform your Business Presentations’ then drop me an email to [email protected] and I’ll send you the details. Why Introverts make great Presenters with Stacey Chazin
2025/01/28
People who regard themselves as introverts often think that presenting and speaking isn't for them. So I'm delighted on this episode that founder of I-Factor Leadership Stacey Chazin talks about why introverts make great presenters Stacey is a leadership coach who helps introverts embrace their strengths and step into leadership roles with confidence In her view introverts can be the most powerful and impactful speakers. Stacey herself is an introvert who believed she wasn't cut out for presenting and speaking. To answer why introverts make great presenters, Stacey talks about the innate strengths of introverts including thoughtful preparation, deep listening, as well as being good storytellers and being potentially more comfortable in front of an audience than having to engage in small talk with one or two people.  Introverts by their very nature tend not to want to spotlight on themselves which means they are great at delivering presentations which focus on the audience and the audience needs rather than themselves and their own achievements  This episode goes a long way to dis-spell the myth that you need to be an extrovert to be a great speaker or presenter Stacey’s two tips to help introverts start presenting: Start with a small audience - could be 3 or 4 colleaguesWeave in a story you are very familiar with Staceys mentions a conference survival guide for introverts: https://ifactorleadership.com/survivalguide And a Meeting Playbook for Introverts: 10 Strategies to Have Your voice Heard and Your Ideas Shine: https://ifactorleadership.com/meetingplaybook/ You can find Stacey at https://ifactorleadership.com And on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/chazinconsulting/ If you think you might need some help with your next key presentation book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your presentation and if I can help you. Transform your Presentation Design with Tim Jacques
2025/01/14
Presentation design can make a huge difference to the success of your presentation. I’m delighted therefore that on this episode I talk about how to transform your presentation design with freelance presentation designer Tim Jacques Tim shares some great insights into how he goes about designing a presentation for his clients based on who they are and the brand message they want to get across as well as who the audience is and how they want to receive the presentation. We also talk about the difference between presentation design for an in-person audience and presentation design for a virtual audience There is no doubt that if you transform your presentation design there is every chance that you will get better results from your presentation. Tim's two top tips that you can implement straightaway to help transform your presentation design are: Simplify your presentation focusing on just one idea per slide and on that slide avoiding text overload  Secondly have a hierarchical structure to each slide to ensure you keep the attention of your audience on what you want them to be focusing on You can find Tim at https://jqscreates.com And also on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/timothyjacques/ If you think you might need some help with your next key presentation book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your presentation and if I can help you. 3 Opportunities for Better Presentations
2025/01/07
Here are three opportunities in 2025 where you can deliver better presentations and as a result potentially create more sales. Firstly internal meetings whether that be to colleagues or management team  Secondly to clients where the key to a better presentation is to focus on the client from the get go not yourself and in both cases to use less words on your slides. The third opportunity for a better presentation in 2025 is when you go out networking and you deliver your elevator pitch so instead of starting with the usual stuff about yourself, identify a problem that your audience can relate to and share how you can help solve it All these opportunities potentially lead to more sales If you think you might need some help with your next key presentation book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your presentation and if I can help you. If I can then the next step would be a 40-50 minute Zoom call where we will go through your presentation and I will be your audience, your challenger and your coach. 6 Presenting Tips for 2025
2024/12/19
6 presenting tips for 2025 to help you transform your business presentations. Each tip from guests who have appeared on the show in 2024. The 6 presenting tips for 2025 can easily be implemented and applied to most business to business sales situations. The 6 presenting tips for 2025 and the guests who shared them are: Jacqueline Farrington - be aware of creating presentation presence before you start to speak and use a rhetorical question, a metaphor or a bold statement to help you generate an engaging start. Peter George - remember that your presentation is about the audience not about you and it's not you that's in the spotlight it is them. You are not speaking to inform you are speaking to transform and remember how important it is to rehearse, rehearse and rehearse. Barbara Specter – don't show up and throw up! In other words if you are delivering a presentation think about how you can ask compelling questions and be curious and if you're doing a keynote at an event then before you present meet and greet some of the audience and use a couple of things from them when you start  Emily Schneider – PowerPoint design – every slide needs to have a particular intention – how does that slide impact your audience? And make sure that you are utilising visuals to their best and that your slides are consistent and simple Conor Cunneen – humour is a great part of any presentation but don't try to be deliberately funny and unless you are very good don't tell jokes – allow the humour to develop naturally Neil Gordon - transform your elevator pitch - here's a line that you could use to start your elevator pitch ‘ You know how hard it is… ‘ – use something like that and you will stand out from everybody else who will be saying things like my name is, I'm from and this is what we do If you think you might need some help with your next key presentation book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your presentation and if I can help you. Transform your Elevator Pitch with Neil Gordon
2024/12/03
Neil Gordon is a persuasion expert who focuses on helping entrepreneurs, speakers and other thought leaders deliver compelling messages. This includes the elevator pitch.  Usually found in action when people go to networking events or indeed any situation where they get a brief amount of time to explain themselves the elevator pitch can be very samey when lots of people are taking it in turns.  Which is why this episode will help you transform your elevator pitch. The usual question that prompts the elevator pitch is 'what do you do?'  Neil though suggests that you should think that the question you've actually been asked is 'what can you do for me?' People often when delivering their elevator pitch introduce themselves, the name of the company and then they describe the product or service they offer in the context of a customer or indeed an industry  Neil offers a much better four step alternative: Step One - describe a problem your audience can relate to 'You know how hard it is.....' - Neil calls this framing the problem Step Two - explain the common flawed solutions to the problem 'and often people think the best way to solve this is to....' Step Three - introducing what Neil call’s the ‘Silver Bullet’ solution - which includes a single powerful sentence that sums up the problem and your solution. Neil shares several examples of this during the recording. Step Four - explain what you do and how you can help - 'I help....so that they .......' You can find Neil at neilcanhelp.com and on his website you can access tons of free resources to help you transform your elevator pitch and become much more persuasive.  I think Neil’s ideas will enable you to transform your elevator pitch so give them a go and stand out from everyone else next time you go networking!  If you think you might need some help with your next key sales pitch book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your sales pitch and if I can help you. Delivering Confident and Impactful Presentations
2024/11/26
Delivering Confident and Impactful Presentations - something all presenters aspire to do. So how can you end up delivering confident and impactful presentations?  Here's how:  Confidence Boosters:Knowledge, Clothes and Notes - You are likely to be presenting on a subject you know well. You may even be an expert. Your audience are there for you. They want to learn from and he enthused by you. Look good, feel good. Choose clothes which you feel good in. Postcard size prompt cards give you something to hold. One or two words per slide can act as your prompt / safety net if you need it. Write big enough so you see the prompt at a glance. Preparation and Practice - Do thorough preparation - focus on what you know and what your audience are expecting. Don’t go overboard on detail. Minimise slides and what’s on them. Take practice seriously. Time it. Speak out-loud standing up if that is how you will be delivering your presentation. Distraction - The most nervous time is often the 10-15 minutes before you start. Use that time to meet & greet your audience, plan your evening, your next holiday - anything to take your mind off thinking about your presentation.  Creating Impact:Start with Audience not you - Your audience want to be engaged, educated, enthused, even entertained by you. So from the get go talk about them, not about you. They are not interested in you, only how what you are sharing with them will benefit them. So no drum banging, awards, client logos or team pics at the start! Maximum of 3 Messages - Regardless of how long your presentation is focus on delivering for your audience no more than three key messages. They can remember and act upon three but they can’t remember six or eight or 27. Use your Voice - Your voice is a key tool in your presentation armoury. Use it to maintain audience engagement, emphasise a key point, pick up or slow down the pace, pause for effect etc…Your voice can give you presence and boost your energy. Practice out-loud. Using your voice will stand you out. If you think you might need some help with your next key presentation book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your presentation and if I can help you. If I can then the next step would be a 40-50 minute Zoom call where we will go through your pitch and I will be your audience, your challenger and your coach. 2024/11/12
No More Boring Presentations with Ivan Wanis Ruiz Ivan is a communication maverick and international speaker, renowned for his book End Boring: A Tactical Approach to Public Speaking and Communication.  With over 15 years of experience, Ivan founded Public Speaking Lab to revolutionise communication skills training. Drawing from neuroscience, stand-up comedy, and police interrogation techniques, he has trained over half a million people worldwide. We talk about body language, eye contact, the belly button rule, slides all with an end goal of helping ensure you don’t deliver a boring presentation  We talked about the three traps that presenters fall into firstly formality, secondly speaking in the third person and thirdly too many details. Ivan’s Top tip number one is practice where people can see you which could be a cafeteria or a park bench or even before you go live and when people are arriving at the conference or event venue Top tip number two is if you're delivering a technical presentation with quite a bit of detail every third or fourth slide simply put in a picture with no words on the slide and introduce it either as a precursor to what you have just been talking about or as an introduction to the information you're going to about to share on the following few minutes  Here’s how to find Ivan: Website: publicspeakinglab.com Instagram: @publicspeakinglab LinkedIn: iwanisruiz Youtube: @publicspeakinglab X: @speaking_lab If would like my help with your key presentation or sales pitch you can find me at: https://www.trevorjlee.com or click on these links key presentation or sales pitch - I'll help ensure you don't waste these golden opportunities.  If you are interested in trialling for free my online course ‘Transform your Business Presentations’ then drop me an email to [email protected] and I’ll send you the details. 10 things to Remember when Presenting
2024/11/05
This episode goes out on November 5th. Presidential election day in the US Bonfire night in the UK In the UK we say Remember, Remember the 5th of November. The 5th of November in question was the one in 1605. A bunch of people plotted to blow up King James 1 who was attending the House of Lords as part of the State Opening of Parliament. The plot was discovered just in time following a tip off.  One of the gang was Guido Fawkes. Guy Fawkes has become the name most associated with the plot. Effigies of him are burnt on bonfires and fireworks lit on November 5th.  So on the theme of Remember, Remember here are 10 things you need to remember when presenting: Remember your presentation is about your audience not youRemember to arrive early when presenting in person or virtuallyRemember to check in advance the equipment such as screen size that will be available to you Remember to take practise seriouslyRemember if you forget something during the presentation only you will knowRemember your audience are keen to learn from you - you know your stuff that’s why you’ve been asked to presentRemember to be yourself Remember to have a glass of water handy should you need itRemember to empty your pockets and get rid of lanyards etc…Remember to enjoy presenting! If would like my help with your key presentation or sales pitch you can find me at: https://www.trevorjlee.com If you are interested in trialling for free my online course ‘Transform your Business Presentations’ then drop me an email to [email protected] and I’ll send you the details.
