The Person Behind the Coach with Christian Thibaudeau
2026/09/28
Send us Fan Mail What makes a good coach? Knowledge matters, but so does knowing when to explain, when to listen, and how to reach the person in front of you. In Episode 499 of Leave Your Mark, I sit down with Christian Thibaudeau, a coach, author and educator whose work has taken him across 26 sports and 22 countries. Christian spent 11 years coaching high school and college football, has worked with Olympians and professional athletes, and has written seven books and more than 800 articles for T Nation and Thibarmy. He also created the Neurotyping system, which explores how personality can inform coaching, communication, training, and nutrition. Our conversation moves through his early years in football and Olympic weightlifting, the mistakes that changed how he coaches, and the difference between sharing everything you know and helping someone learn. Christian speaks openly about self-esteem, his drive to earn approval, the injuries that came from pushing his own training too far, and what fatherhood has taught him about himself. It’s a thoughtful conversation about the person behind the coach, and the work of continuing to grow in both roles. Enjoy! Caring for Your Community with Therese Leigh
2026/09/21
Send us Fan Mail Therese Leigh is a sports physiotherapist, clinic owner, mentor, and leader who has spent more than 20 years working in high-performance sport. Her career has taken her through multiple World Championships and Olympic Games, senior roles with national sport organizations, and the development of systems and protocols that continue to support athletes and practitioners today. In this episode, Therese shares the path that took her from an early love of skiing and a formative knee injury to physiotherapy school, international sport, and eventually entrepreneurship in Whistler. We explore the lessons she carried from the fine dining industry into clinical practice, the demands and sacrifices of elite sport, the burnout that can accompany a relentless work ethic, and the importance of learning to communicate, set boundaries, and stay connected to the people who matter most. Therese also describes how she is applying high-performance rehabilitation principles to Whistler’s mountain professionals. For ski patrollers and others whose careers, sports and lifestyles depend upon their physical capacity, returning to basic function is not enough. They must be exceptionally fit, strong, and prepared for the unpredictable demands of mountain work. Through partnerships with CSI Whistler and other community stakeholders, Therese is helping build what she calls a podium-level approach to occupational rehabilitation. This is a thoughtful conversation about care, community, leadership, and legacy. Therese reflects on the mentors who shaped her, the importance of collaboration across professional disciplines, the responsibility of developing the next generation of therapists, and her own evolving effort to balance ambition with relationships, presence, and a life outdoors. Her story is a powerful reminder that meaningful work is not only about what we accomplish, but also about the systems, communities, and people we strengthen along the way. Putting the Human Being Back Together Again with Darren McConaghy
2026/09/08
Send us Fan Mail What happens when we stop treating the painful body part and start trying to understand the person attached to it? In this episode of Leave Your Mark, I sit down with Darren McConaghy, an Athletic Therapist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Osteopathic Manual Practitioner, and reconditioning professional with more than two decades of experience across sport, private practice, and human performance. Darren and I share a long history, which makes this conversation both professional and personal. We explore how his experiences across different disciplines have shaped the way he thinks today, and why complex problems often require us to step outside the boundaries of any single profession. We dig into the limitations of symptom-focused healthcare, the danger of allowing imaging to dictate treatment, and our concerns about moving too quickly toward surgery or emerging interventions before asking more fundamental questions. We also discuss the importance of understanding what a person actually needs their body to do before deciding that something needs to be “fixed.” A major theme of our conversation is the value of the generalist: someone willing to look at injury history, movement, strength, capacity, lifestyle, context, and the demands of real life, then bring those pieces together into a coherent strategy. We also talk about athlete autonomy and why the ultimate goal of good reconditioning should be to make people less dependent on us, not more. Darren shares his evolution from professional sport to private practice, his return to osteopathy, his current consulting work in Florida, and what more than twenty years of experience have taught him about simplifying complex problems. This is a conversation about experience, critical thinking, curiosity, and having the confidence to look at a problem through a different lens. Enjoy! Compassion, Leadership & a Life in High Performance with Ron O'Hare
2026/09/02
Send us Fan Mail Ron O’Hare has spent more than 25 years working at the intersection of sport physiotherapy, leadership, and high performance. Today, he serves as Senior Manager of Health Performance at the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, leading integrated health services supporting Olympic, Paralympic, and high-performance athletes and coaches. But this conversation is about much more than Ron’s professional résumé. We go back to his childhood, growing up “on the other side of the tracks,” and explore how sport became a place of structure, safety, identity, and belonging. Ron shares his journey from dreaming of becoming a professional baseball player to finding volleyball, eventually playing five years at Queen’s University before discovering his path into physiotherapy. From there, our conversation moves through more than two decades of clinical practice, building and running his own clinic, raising four children, working within Canadian high-performance sport, and eventually stepping into health-performance leadership. Ron speaks openly about compassion, caregiving, persistence, leadership, family, professional sacrifice, and the fatigue that can come from spending a career deeply invested in helping others. We also discuss how difficult experiences, including a tragic event involving an athlete during a training camp in St. Kitts, changed his perspective on leadership, responsibility, and what really matters. At its heart, this is a conversation about the person behind the practitioner. About how our experiences shape the way we care for people, how our priorities change over a lifetime, and why meaningful careers are rarely built according to a perfectly constructed plan. Another thoughtful conversation with an experienced practitioner, leader, father, coach, and genuinely reflective human being. Enjoy. Earning Trust, Building Relationships & Finding Your Way in High Performance with Jason Martin
2026/08/26
Send us Fan Mail What does it really take to build a career in professional sport? This week on Leave Your Mark, I sit down with strength and conditioning coach Jason Martin as he prepares to begin a new chapter as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jason’s path began early, earning his first training certification at just 16 before completing his Physical Education degree at McGill University. His career would eventually take him through CrossFit, professional tennis, Major League Baseball, more than a decade of working with hockey players, and three seasons in player development with the Pittsburgh Penguins. But this conversation is about much more than Jason’s résumé. We talk about the influence of mentorship, particularly his relationship with Andy O’Brien, and why experience can’t simply be replaced by collecting certifications. Jason shares his thoughts on asking for feedback, recognizing your limitations, building genuine relationships, and allowing a career to develop without trying to engineer every next step. We also dig into one of the most important challenges of working in professional sport: earning the trust of athletes who didn’t necessarily choose you to work with them. Jason’s philosophy is refreshingly simple. Ask questions. Listen. Understand what the athlete needs. Be good to people. Do quality work. And give trust the time it needs to develop. A great conversation about coaching, mentorship, relationships, experience, and the long game of building a meaningful career in high performance. Measuring Movement, Planar Plasticity & the Future of Assessment with Ryan Comeau
2026/08/17
Send us Fan Mail What if one of the most important things we assess in healthcare is also one of the things we measure least objectively? This week on Leave Your Mark, I sit down with Dr. Ryan Comeau, chiropractor, former NCAA Division I hockey goaltender, founder of Kinetisense, and creator of the NeuroPlanar Method. Ryan’s journey begins in sport, where years in the crease taught him about grit, adaptability, and the difference between quitting and pivoting. Injuries eventually changed the direction of his athletic career. Still, they also led him toward healthcare and a question that would ultimately shape his professional life: Why are we still assessing human movement primarily with our eyes and tools that have existed for centuries? That question led Ryan to build Kinetisense, a clinical-grade 3D markerless motion-capture platform designed to give practitioners objective movement data while augmenting, rather than replacing, clinical expertise. Our conversation explores Ryan’s evolution from athlete to clinician to entrepreneur; the challenges of bringing new technology into healthcare; the NeuroPlanar Method; planar plasticity; early sport specialization; and what three-dimensional movement data can reveal that our eyes may miss. We also get into something I find particularly interesting: how objective technology might help us validate, challenge, and ultimately sharpen the clinical observations experienced practitioners have developed over decades. A fascinating conversation about movement, measurement, entrepreneurship, and the willingness to keep asking better questions. Performance Therapy, Reconditioning and Learning to Live With Uncertainty with Gerry Ramogida
2026/08/11
Send us Fan Mail What happens when two practitioners with decades of experience stop trying to provide answers and start exploring the questions? In this episode, I reconnect with longtime friend and performance therapist Gerry Ramogida for a wide-ranging conversation about performance therapy, Reconditioning, clinical reasoning, and what it really means to work with complex human beings. Gerry has spent nearly three decades working across the NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB, and Olympic sport, contributing to championship organizations including the Seattle Seahawks and Golden State Warriors. Today, he continues to work in professional hockey with the Vancouver Canucks while educating and mentoring practitioners around the world. We explore why diagnosis matters but can never tell the whole story, why understanding the demands of the person in front of you must precede intervention, and why practitioners need to continually observe, intervene, reassess, and remain willing to change direction. We talk about manual therapy as an input rather than an outcome, the importance of creating ownership after an intervention, and the danger of becoming so attached to our tools that everything begins to look like something we know how to treat. Perhaps most importantly, we talk about uncertainty. After almost thirty years of practice, Gerry makes the observation that certainty simply does not exist when working with complex human systems. Expertise may therefore be less about knowing exactly what will happen and more about developing the knowledge, curiosity and humility to explore what might. Our conversation eventually moves beyond performance and into something even more important: service, relationships and remembering the people who provide the foundation that allows us to do this work in the first place. This is a conversation between two old friends who have spent much of their lives trying to understand human performance and who remain fascinated by how much there is still to learn. Curiosity, Community, and the Evolution of Care with Steven Copobianco
2026/08/04
Send us Fan Mail What happens when you refuse to stop asking questions? In Episode 491 of Leave Your Mark, I sit down with Steven Copobianco—better known to many as "Capo"—to explore a career that has been defined by curiosity, continuous learning, and a relentless desire to better serve people. Steve is a clinician, educator, innovator, and co-founder of RockTape. A graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic West with a Diplomate in Rehabilitation and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist designation, he has spent more than two decades teaching clinicians around the world to think differently about movement, rehabilitation, and performance. But this conversation goes far beyond credentials. We trace Steve's journey from growing up on a farm near Barrie, Ontario, to his love of hockey and the Boston Bruins, through York University, Florida, Palmer West, and eventually to building one of the most recognizable education companies in rehabilitation. Along the way, we discuss the value of observation, why you don't need to be an expert in every sport to understand movement, how working with individuals with cerebral palsy changed the trajectory of his career, and why the best clinicians eventually stop treating body parts and start seeing the person in front of them. We also talk about entrepreneurship, fatherhood, community, and how success often comes from being willing to leave the comfort of what you know in pursuit of what you might become. If you're a clinician, coach, therapist, or simply someone who believes that growth begins with curiosity, you'll find plenty to take away from this conversation. Curiosity, Science, Relationships, and the Pursuit of Better Questions with Keith Barr
2026/07/21
Send us Fan Mail What shapes a world-leading scientist? Is it intelligence? Great mentors? Opportunity? Or simply an insatiable curiosity that never stops asking why? In Episode 489 of the Leave Your Mark Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Keith Baar, one of the world's most respected molecular exercise physiologists, whose work has transformed our understanding of muscle growth, tendon adaptation, rehabilitation, and human performance. As Professor of Molecular Exercise Physiology at UC Davis—and soon to begin the next chapter of his career at McMaster University—Keith has spent decades translating molecular biology into practical strategies for clinicians, therapists, coaches, and elite sporting organizations worldwide. But this conversation isn't about signalling pathways or collagen synthesis. It's about the journey that created the scientist. We explore the mentors who shaped him, why curiosity has always driven his career, how his relationship with his wife Barb influenced many of life's biggest decisions, and the leadership philosophy that built one of the world's most respected research laboratories around the simple idea of conducting world-class science in a family environment. Along the way, we discuss why science should never be about proving yourself right, how diverse experiences lead to better discoveries, the challenges facing research today, and why asking better questions is often more important than finding quick answers. Of course, we couldn't resist diving into some of Keith's latest work on tendon adaptation, including the exciting potential of low-load, long-duration isometrics (3LD) and what his research may mean for rehabilitation and performance practitioners everywhere. This is an episode about science. But even more, it's an episode about the people behind the science. I think you're going to enjoy this one. Neuroscience Part 2 – Reconditioning the Nervous System for Better Performance with Matt Bush
2026/07/14
Send us Fan Mail Once we understand that pain is an output of the nervous system, the next question becomes: What do we actually do about it? In Part 2, Matt Bush takes us beyond theory and into practical application, exploring how practitioners can begin integrating neurological principles into rehabilitation and performance. We discuss chronic pain, nociplastic pain, sensory integration, and why the body consistently chooses the movement strategy that feels safest—not necessarily the mechanically ideal one. Matt shares remarkable clinical stories demonstrating how small neurological interventions can create dramatic changes in movement, performance, and pain, while explaining why vision, vestibular function, and proprioception deserve a much larger role in our assessments. We finish with an important discussion about the future of our profession and why embracing applied neurology may represent one of the next major evolutions in rehabilitation and performance. In this episode we discuss: • Nociceptive versus nociplastic pain • Why chronic pain persists after tissues have healed • Pain neuroscience education and athlete confidence • Sensory integration and movement efficiency • How neurological mismatches affect performance • Practical neurological interventions that create immediate change • Why the future of rehabilitation is likely to become increasingly brain-centered Whether you're a therapist, athletic trainer, strength coach, or movement professional, this episode offers a fresh perspective on helping people move better, recover faster, and perform at a higher level. Neuroscience Part 1 – Why the Nervous System Changes Everything We Thought We Knew About Pain with Matt Bush
2026/07/08
Send us Fan Mail What if pain isn't simply the result of damaged tissue? What if movement quality, performance, and rehabilitation are driven by something far more complex than muscles and joints? In Part 1 of this conversation, I sit down with performance therapist and educator Matt Bush to explore the neurological foundations of pain, threat, and movement. Together, we unpack why the brain constantly interprets information from our visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive systems to determine whether movement is safe—and why that process has profound implications for every therapist, coach, and performance practitioner. Along the way, we discuss why manual therapy is already influencing the nervous system whether we recognize it or not, how previous injuries and life experiences shape pain sensitivity, the role of sensory weighting in chronic tendinopathy, and why understanding the nervous system fundamentally changes the way we assess and treat our athletes. If you've ever wondered why two people with the same injury can have completely different outcomes, this conversation will challenge the way you think about rehabilitation. In this episode, we discuss: • Why the nervous system predicts rather than reacts • The brain's threat detection and salience networks • Why pain is a protective output—not simply a tissue problem • Sensory weighting and its role in persistent knee pain • How previous experiences influence pain sensitivity • Why therapists are already practicing neurology every day This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation that explores the future of rehabilitation and performance through the lens of neuroscience. Rewiring Recovery, Performance, and Human Potential with Garrett Salpeter
2026/06/23
Send us Fan Mail Garrett Salpeter is an engineer, entrepreneur, author, and founder of NeuFit, best known as the creator of the NEUBIE device and his pioneering work at the intersection of neuroscience, rehabilitation, and human performance. In this episode of Leave Your Mark, Garrett shares the journey that began with a significant hockey injury and evolved into a lifelong pursuit of understanding how the nervous system influences recovery, movement, and performance. A former collegiate hockey player with a background in physics and engineering, Garrett's curiosity led him beyond traditional rehabilitation models and into the world of functional neurology, motor control, and neuroplasticity. Together, we explore the lessons hockey taught him about devotion, discipline, teamwork, and personal growth, as well as the pivotal experiences that shaped his professional path. Garrett discusses his transition from academia to entrepreneurship, the challenges of building a company from the ground up, and the development of direct current technologies designed to help people move, heal, and perform at a higher level. Our conversation dives into the concept of the nervous system as the body's software, the role of compensation in both physical and psychological health, and why addressing root causes often produces more meaningful and lasting outcomes than simply treating symptoms. Whether you're a coach, therapist, clinician, athlete, or simply fascinated by human performance, this episode offers a thoughtful look at innovation, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of understanding how we adapt and thrive. In this episode, we discuss: • Garrett's hockey journey and the lessons sport taught him about excellence and contribution • How a serious injury led him to functional neurology and neuroscience • The nervous system's role in movement, pain, and performance • Leaving academia to pursue entrepreneurship and innovation • The development of the NEUBIE and direct current technology • Compensation patterns in rehabilitation and human behavior • Root cause thinking in performance and recovery • Building a business while staying aligned with personal values • The future of neuromuscular rehabilitation and human optimization Enjoy the conversation.
