St. Wenceslaus — the "Good King Wenceslas" of the Christmas carol — snuck out barefoot at night to give alms in secret. Bound for the Holy Land, Gerard's ship was forced ashore by a storm, and he ended up staying in Hungary as a missionary bishop instead, personally tutoring the boy who became St. Emeric.
