Everything has been ruined. The NFL ruined what was once perfect and square, and turned it into an oddly shaped nonsensical squiggle. 17 games. 18 weeks. More football that doesn’t need to exist. No matter how badly you want something, this isn’t enough for something to occur. All I wanted was for the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills to play in the postseason. Instead, Ryan Tannehill threw a late interception that turned into a Evan McPherson game winning field goal after Joe Burrow hit Ja’Marr Chase on a corner route, and Josh Allen gave Patrick Mahomes eight seconds too many, which led to his defense wasting his legendary performance. This is vacation. I have a pink aquatic bird in my cup. Sunscreen slathered across my belly. My heart merry and bright. For I have spent eighteen weeks watching every Houston Texans game, watching the condensed version, watching the Coach’s film, and writing and talking about the Houston Texans. A football team devoid of questions. A crawl through the sludge. But now we are free. We get to watch real, actual football again. The Divisional Round is the best sports weekend of the year, and will wash out the Super Wildcard Round life wasting spread. I can’t wait for it. We’ve seen the metaphors before. Climbing through the tunnel of excrement, pushing the boulder to the hill, docking the submarine, waltzing through the toy aisle during Christmas time after accidentally attending an occult ritual and questioning the foundation of a marriage. Now we are the metaphor. We are experiencing something we used to connect to, and are living it. The Houston Texans finished their 2021 NFL season last weekend. The weekly battle fight of watching the game, talking and listening and thinking about the game, doom scrolling, and watching the film is over. We are fans again. Able to sit on the couch and enjoy the game of football. I have a seat for you right next to me. I’ve been waiting for you. A wise man once said, “I took this job simply because there’s 32 of these in this league. It is a pleasure, it is a privilege, it is an honor to be the head coach of one of these franchises and I happen to have that opportunity to do that now. Again, obviously I’m here simply because this is a bottom-line business and regardless of what had happened in the past, I’ve been put in a situation here to be the head coach of this football team. Our goal, every team’s goal in this league is to win a Super Bowl. Every year. Every team thinks that that can happen every year, regardless of what happened the year before, it’s always the goal. That’s always the goal that we’ll have when everybody walks through that door, everybody in the building. Everybody here, that’s our one goal. When the season is over, you start over. You evaluate, you look at things, you see what you need to do to be able to get better. That’s what Nick (Caserio) and this staff and everybody we have here is going to do during this process. I look at it as a way as this is a new year. This is a new start and what we’re getting ready to do now will have nothing to do with what happened in the past as we’re going forward right now to do the things that we need to do to be the best franchise that we can be, and go and try to accomplish those goals. I feel like that this franchise has the inner workings to do that and that’s why I’m here.” That was eleven and a half months ago. The last time I saw the Houston Texans play LIVE football, I was a freshman in college, and my good friend Taylor’s Uncle, took him, another friend, and I, to watch them play the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009. We drank three underage Miller Lites and ate a hamburger before the game. His uncle left at halftime because said beers and hamburger made him sleepy. Maurice Jones-Drew scored a touchdown down at our endzone and Texans fans ran to the wall to give him the middle finger. Houston signed Chris Brown that summer to be their redzone back, only for him to fumble into the endzone when attempting to score the game tying touchdown. The Jags recovered. The Texans lost. That’s how things were from 2008-2010. This time we went again with his Uncle, and his niece, and my wife and four month son. This Texans team is entirely different. They signed a horde of veterans to try and win games this year, but replicated last season’s four win total. Houston had a positive point differential, they were blown out of multiple games, their talent and coaching staff was outmatched. Week 18. The end. A summation of last year’s decisions. Despite all of this, it was a beautiful time, to see NRG stadium, how the light flew through the roof, watching the ball go up really high and fall back down really far, witnessing the inebriated stumble when they should be at church, to meet other Titans fans, and see our favorite football team in person once again. It’s been too long, but it’s never too late. Thank you again TIM. Oh, look it’s another year. Remember that? Remember when. Back then when people said things like, “UGH. 2020, is it over yet?”, and “2021 needs to hurry up and get here,” while failing to realize time is the only finite resource that we have. Some strange and stupid idea that a change in the calendar will make all the things you hate simply go away. Yes. Those days are battered and frayed. It’s a new year and a new time. It’s just the way it’s designed. We all our merely rafts taken across the river of time, strewn through sweet calm water that moves faster to our liking, and violent upheavals that distort water and slows everything down to a crawl. We forget. The things we were going to do, the ideas we didn’t act on, became figments and fractures that never find life. Let’s change that. I’ve been meaning to talk to our old friend Jordan (Texans Thoughts) about our football team. Two years have gone by since we last spoke in this format. Turn ideas into reality. In a lost season, where all hope sunk to the bottom of the sea last March, the Houston Texans needed, and searched desperately for some of it. Davis Mills has turned from unplayable to playable, hitting his floor of backup quarterback a season or two early, giving desire and hope that he may become a competent starting quarterback one day. Jonathan Greenard has turned into someone who should be the third best player on a good front seven. Tavierre Thomas and Jonathan Owens maybe eventual consistent starters on a NFL roster. Beating a hopeful playoff Chargers team with the backups, and the backups to the backups, behind the arm of ludicrous Davis Mills, was all everyone needed, after Jacksonville week one being so far away.
