Central to becoming who God calls us to be, we must understand who we were meant to be as His creation. Understanding the reality of our existence and condition will transform how we live. Gen 1:27 "So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." When Moses writes the Genesis account, the Israelites are former slaves. Who were they made for? What is their purpose? God told His people... YOU are my image to the world. HUMAN! Paul wrote to a flourishing church that false teachers were beginning to pull off course with a mixture of religious ideas, such as requiring circumcision and other strict disciplines, as well as angel worship. These teachers gave Jesus a high place, but not the supreme place. Paul’s answer was simple: the Gospel plus anything is not the Gospel. Jesus is Christianity. He is the good news. Everything is centered in Him. WATCH FULL SERVICE ON YOUTUBE DOWNLOAD PDF SERMON NOTES HEREFIND THIS WEEKS ANNOUNCEMENTS, SONG LIST, NOTES, AND MORE AT YOUVERSION 2026 JULY MISSIONS UPDATE

In our last official week in the book of Colossians, Paul reminds us of the importance of community. Paul gives us a list of names he wants the Colossian church to welcome and pray for. Paul’s ending is reminding us that the quickest way to exalt God with our mouth is to love Him with our heart, and to see what He is doing in the lives of others. If Paul’s job is to make the “mystery of Christ” clear, it is the Colossians’ job (and ours) as well. Paul tells us we must also learn to speak with grace and use every opportunity to do so. Beginning in prayer for others, listening to their stories, sharing meals, serving each other, and sharing the good news of Jesus are ways we can bless them and grow in maturity. In today’s text, Paul makes some interesting statements about how he assumes the Colossian church is praying. Whether God opens another door for Paul or not, he wants to be clear on how he “ought to speak.” Paul says we should speak plainly and understandably. Last week we saw Isaiah’s vision of the holy God, high and exalted, surrounded by seraphim crying, “Holy, holy, holy.” This week we look at his response, in Isaiah 6:5-8 (NKJV), and see it as a picture of the Gospel unfolding in four movements. Each of us has a story. This morning we pause our walk through Colossians to look first at someone else’s - the prophet, Isaiah. We see the same themes of our own story mirrored in Isaiah’s: creation, the brokenness of sin, and the hope of redemption through Christ. Most people who would call themselves Christians (or even just “religious”) think of worship as something they do inside the church. When we think of ministry, we also often think “inside the church.” We forget that all of our lives—including our jobs—are also worship. We tend to see our work as a necessity to put food on the table and forget that God has an interest in our jobs. Work was given as a gift and is part of our design. Today in Colossians we continue looking at a new understanding of what were called “household codes.” Household codes governed how people within a household would/should act and interact with one another. They laid out who had authority and what responsibilities each person in the household were (by law) committed to. Today we look at slaves and masters. Today in Colossians we start looking at something that is very controversial in our world today but was very hopeful and freeing in Paul’s day: a new understanding of what were called “household codes.” Household codes governed how people within a household would/ should act and interact with one another—it was foundational for the broader community. The code laid out who had authority and what responsibilities each person in the household was (by law) committed to. A few weeks ago we talked about 1. The Passive obedience of Jesus– which means that Jesus took our sin on Himself. 2. The Active obedience of Jesus – which means that Jesus earned our reward for us. In Christ, we receive sonship, adoption into family, and righteousness; all the things the Father gives us belong to Jesus. They cost Him His life, but He lovingly grants them to us. The active obedience of Christ means He earned our reward for us. He took our curse and He earned our blessing. Today we are looking back at Colossians 1 to see the prayer that Paul prayed for the church in Colossae. There is a way we should pray for those who trust in Jesus that is different than how we pray for those who don’t believe. Our prayer for those who don’t know Jesus is that they would come to trust Him; our prayer for believers is about growth, knowledge, and a walk that honors God with all of our life. Paul not only tells the Colossians that he is praying for them, but also what he is praying for them. Through much of the Fall, Element will be answering questions posed by those at Element. We do this to help us understand the Bible and Jesus better. Today we deal with the phrase, "God helps those who help themselves" which is probably the most often quoted phrase that is NOT found in the Bible, yet people think it is. We can chalk this up to “conventional wisdom.” Conventional wisdom is something that we put in the place of God’s wisdom because we tend to think we are smarter than God. God’s Love for Us — Verses 1–3 John 3:1 — “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” John intentionally focuses our attention on the astounding nature of God’s fatherly love for us: steadfast, unconditional, and unearned.
