Description

There are a lot of podcasts. But so many existing podcasts lack the voices and stories of young Black women and other women of color. Each episode of Bring Your Own Chair features a conversation with a young woman of color where she will share her background, interests, goals, and expertise. Young women of color are habitually not offered a seat at the table and this space will allow us to bring our own chair, create a space where we are the experts on our own stories, and share our voices with the world.

BYOC x BWGB: Ciara Coleman
2026/10/13
What does philanthropy look like when Black women are not only at the table, but actively reshaping how resources move? In this episode, Khayriyyah sits down with Black Women Give Back honoree Ciara Coleman, founder of Geaux Girl Giving, a community-driven giving collective investing in Black women and girls across Louisiana. Ciara shares how her experiences inside traditional philanthropy and as a founder have shaped her belief in doing philanthropy differently: shifting decision-making power to communities, funding Black women abundantly, and creating space not just to meet immediate needs, but to dream about what could be possible. They also talk about recognizing the everyday Black women whose contributions often go unseen, expanding our understanding of who gets to be a philanthropist, and building a practice of generosity that leaves room for rest, joy, and care. For Ciara, giving back is not about becoming a martyr to the work, but learning to pour from a full cup. And when asked what it means to “bring your own chair,” Ciara offers one word: audacity. The audacity to show up, fill a gap, move resources, and build what your community deserves. Find the transcript here!
BYOC x BWGB: Yvonne Moore
2026/10/06
What would philanthropy look like if we truly listened to, believed, and trusted the communities we say we want to serve? In this episode of Bring Your Own Chair x Black Women Give Back, Khayriyyah sits down with Black Women Give Back honoree Yvonne Moore, Founder and Managing Director of Moore Philanthropy, for a candid conversation about power, community, and what it takes to push philanthropy closer to its potential. Yvonne reflects on building Moore Philanthropy, the lessons she learned about giving long before entering the sector, and why the best ideas so often come directly from community. Together, they unpack the gap between philanthropy’s stated values and its practices, the importance of recognizing and exercising the power we already hold, and what it means for Black women to support one another while navigating institutions that weren’t built with us in mind. It’s a conversation about honoring those who came before us, creating something better for those coming next, and learning to live fully in our power. Find the transcript here!
BYOC x BWGB: Ada Williams Prince
2026/08/25
Before we dive into the stories of this season's Black Women Give Back honorees, we begin with one of the leaders who helped shape this season from the very beginning. In this opening episode, host Khayriyyah MuhammadSmith sits down with fellow Black Women Give Back honoree (2022), philanthropy strategist, and collaborator Ada Williams Prince, whose partnership was instrumental in curating the voices and conversations you'll hear throughout this series. Together, they explore the questions that have shaped this season: What does it mean to negotiate and shift power within philanthropy? Why does funding equity require nuance rather than one-size-fits-all solutions? And how do we make space to care for ourselves while doing work that asks so much of us? This conversation is an invitation to think more deeply about philanthropy—not simply as the movement of money, but as the movement of power, relationships, and possibility. It's a reflection on leadership, purpose, and the responsibility we carry as stewards of resources and change. Whether you work in philanthropy, are curious about the sector, or simply believe in building a more equitable future, this episode sets the stage for the conversations to come. In this episode, we discuss: What it means to negotiate and shift power in philanthropy Why funding equity requires context, trust, and nuance Finding moments of care and sustainability in mission-driven work The vision behind the BYOC x Black Women Give Back podcast season Welcome to the conversation.
