Description

We all agree that being prepared for an emergency is essential. That's why preparing a "Bug Out Bag" that you can grab and go in an emergency can be a lifesaver. It also opens the door to deeper dives in planning and prepping that can be critical. I began posting information here over 10 years ago, and I regularly update it. I've also gone beyond the traditional products. Because creating "the bag" is just the first step to being prepared, not the final product. We now know we each need at least 30 days' worth of essential supplies, like food, water, and medicine. We must be our own first responders.I cover topics like:*Products I both use and trust.*Often forgotten items you need to have in your bag.*Psychological and Emotional planning for the family*Planning for Kids and Seniors*What to do when Plan "A" fails? This includes a curated list of links from various sources, too. I'll be sharing and updating links to sites I buy from and products I use. So we are clear, I have no sponsors, so the opinions,  both good and bad, are my own.Join me as I begin the 11th year/10th season of productions in an ongoing series of podcasts for you and your family to use and to share with others as you build a community. Is this fun or what?

January Welcome: Back To School, Prepped For Life
2026/01/05
Send us a text A short outage can be annoying; a long one can upend your life. We open the door to a calmer, more capable approach to preparedness by focusing on the two weak links that fail first after a crisis: water and power. With our upcoming OLLI course as the backdrop, we map a practical path from “I should get ready” to “I can handle thirty days.” We start with water because scarcity and contamination now collide more often. You’ll hear a clear breakdown of collection and storage fundamentals, why purification isn’t the same as removing chemicals, and how to layer treatment with sediment filters, activated carbon, boiling or UV, and when to consider reverse osmosis. We point to trusted resources and emphasize simple routines that keep your supply fresh and safe. Then we shift to electricity: choosing the right portable solar power stations, matching watt-hours to your actual loads, and using open-box and seasonal deals to stretch your budget. From 750 to 2000 watt setups, we share where solar shines—quiet backup for lights, comms, laptops, and compact fridges—and how to size panels and plan multiple charging paths. The goal isn’t a bunker; it’s reliable, everyday capability you use and understand. Finally, we turn gift cards and post-holiday sales into durable wins by shopping local for gear you’ll use weekly: water containers, headlamps, first aid, and layers that hold up. Throughout, we frame preparedness as being your own first responder, not a caricature—calm, skilled, and ready for thirty days of self-sufficiency. If this resonates, tap follow, share this with someone who could use a nudge, and leave a quick review telling us your top priority this month: water or power? Smart Survival Stocking Stuffers And Real-World Readiness
2025/12/14
Send us a text Ten days before Christmas is the perfect moment to trade forgettable gadgets for gear that actually helps when plans fall apart. We dive into a no-nonsense holiday guide anchored in field-tested essentials: tiny can openers that never quit, emergency blankets that truly keep you warm, pocket flashlights bright enough to trust, and weatherproof notebooks that safeguard critical details when your phone is dead or soaked. The goal is simple—give useful tools that make loved ones more capable tomorrow than they were today. We take a hard look at food and water strategy so gifts don’t gather dust. You’ll hear why dehydrated meals should be taste-tested now, how to prevent leaky trunk disasters, and when a standalone water filter like the Sawyer Mini beats a single-user bottle. We also get practical about money: small bills tucked in separate envelopes, a handful of coins to smooth barters, and a cautious view of silver eagles as a hedge rather than a plan. If your family isn’t into prepping, you’ll get friendly, low-intimidation ideas—a compact filter, a reliable pocket knife, or a real compass with a quick lesson on local declination—that spark interest without pressure. We close by calling out a critical truth: life-saving tools are not where you cut costs. A trusted tourniquet and solid shears beat bargain-bin versions every time. For those watching budgets, a well-aimed gift card plus post-holiday sales can unlock the good stuff without overspending. Subscribe for more practical readiness, share this with the person who needs a sensible list, and leave a review telling us the one gift you’re adding to your kit this year. Fall Readiness For Smarter Self-Protection
2025/11/25
Send us a text First frost hit and we took the hint: it’s time to rethink not just jackets and batteries, but the way we prep, train, and carry ourselves through the season. We start with a fall gear audit—simple steps that pay off fast, like checking battery corrosion, rotating food, and pulling forgotten gadgets from the “oh yeah” drawer. From there we get practical about privacy with Faraday phone sleeves, weighing real‑world benefits in crowded spaces against the hype, and we share how to test them in a calm, rational way. Lighting becomes an unsung hero. Today’s headlamps are lighter, USB‑powered, and red‑light capable, making them ideal for late dog walks, campsite tasks, and first aid when both hands must stay free. We talk through tradeoffs, including how to avoid spotlighting your face at distance, and why neck‑worn lights can be a smart alternative. Then we pivot to what really changes outcomes: time. The same patience that makes a great sauce makes durable skills. We walk through a safer path for new shooters and returning owners—non‑ballistic self‑defense, fundamentals of safe handling, and only then concealed carry law, holsters, and everyday decision‑making. Along the way we explain why firearm fit matters more than brand hype, how range passes encourage consistent, perfect practice, and how to avoid locking in bad habits you picked up from well‑meaning advice at the bench. We emphasize avoidance and critical thinking as the highest form of self‑defense, and share how families can turn range time into real bonding and steady progress. If you’re upgrading your kit, starting your training, or gifting confidence to someone you care about, this conversation gives you a clear, humane roadmap to do it right. If this resonates, subscribe, share with a friend who needs a smarter start, and leave a quick review to help others find the show. Tell us: what’s the first piece of gear or training you’re upgrading this season? Decade of Preparedness: Celebrating 100 Episodes
2025/09/29
Send us a text A decade of emergency preparedness wisdom culminates in this landmark 100th episode that reflects on how much has changed—and how much remains the same—in the world of personal safety and disaster readiness. The preparedness landscape has transformed dramatically since we began. What started with people carrying a few granola bars in backpacks has evolved into comprehensive 30-day self-sufficiency planning. Both seniors and young people now embrace preparedness not as a hobby but as a necessary lifestyle. Meanwhile, the fundamental truth remains unchanged: you are your own first responder until help arrives. As climate disasters increase in both frequency and severity, emergency resources continue to stretch thinner. The woods that once seemed like evacuation sanctuaries have become dangerous tinderboxes. Communities devastated by disasters take years—not weeks—to rebuild. These realities demand we shift our thinking from "if" an emergency happens to "when" it occurs. The digital transformation of our world has created new vulnerabilities few consider until it's too late. When internet infrastructure fails during disasters, our digital financial systems become instantly useless. Gas pumps won't operate, stores can't process cards, and communication channels disappear. Having cash reserves and alternative communication methods isn't paranoia—it's practical planning for inevitable disruptions. Situational awareness remains our greatest protection, while honest assessment of our physical capabilities ensures our plans remain viable as we age or face injuries. Regular training builds the muscle memory needed for crisis response, while routine maintenance of supplies prevents disappointment when emergencies strike. The question isn't whether you'll face an emergency—it's whether you'll be prepared when you do. Join us for specialized training in concealed carry, home defense, and non-ballistic self-defense. Share this podcast to help others develop the skills and mindset needed for self-reliance during challenging times. Together, we'll continue building a community of prepared, confident individuals ready to face whatever the next decade brings. Broken Wings: Planning for When You're Down
2025/06/18
Send us a text A critical moment of vulnerability awaits us all. That moment when we—the prepared ones, the designated responders—find ourselves suddenly incapacitated during an emergency. What happens when you can't be the hero in your own story? As we celebrate our 99th episode and over 10,000 downloads, we're tackling this often-overlooked aspect of preparedness. Using the example of someone recovering from open-heart surgery who faces sternal precautions (unable to lift, push, or even dress normally), we explore how quickly an emergency can transform when the caregiver becomes the patient. Have you considered what would happen if you broke your leg during an evacuation? Or if you received CPR, which often cracks the sternum? Would your group or family know how to apply a tourniquet correctly, treat shock, or manage severe bleeding without your guidance? These aren't comfortable questions, but they're essential ones. Quality matters tremendously in emergency situations. As we emphasize, "You don't want a discount steak and you don't want a discount tourniquet." Your life could depend on proper training and equipment distributed among multiple capable hands. Beyond physical preparedness, we also discuss the psychological aspects of emergencies—managing hysteria, fear responses, and group dynamics when strangers might join your circle during a crisis. Looking forward to our milestone 100th episode, we're shifting our focus toward long-term resilience and 30-day self-sufficiency as the new minimum standard. Join us as we continue exploring survival beyond the typical 72-hour bug out bag mentality. What questions do you have about preparing for your own vulnerability in crisis situations? Send them our way as we embark on this next chapter together. Reminder: Keep your medications together in one location to collect them quickly, as well a container or bag to transport them. Have a list of all meds on the Fridge. Good for you to grab. Very useful for emergency responders. Typed is best. When Everyday Incidents Become Survival Lessons
2025/05/11
Send us a text When a car crashed into the loading dock of a restaurant while I was having lunch, it sparked an important realization—I'd forgotten to check the exits when I walked in. This simple oversight highlights how easily we neglect situational awareness in our daily routines. Preparedness isn't just about stockpiling supplies; it's about developing habits that keep you safe in any environment. Whether entering a restaurant, grocery store, or public space, take a moment to observe who's there, what they're doing, where the exits are, and what resources might be available. Are people behaving normally? Is security unusually tight? These environmental cues provide valuable information about potential risks and should influence your decisions. The grocery store landscape has changed dramatically in recent months—emptier shelves, modified hours, items locked behind cases, and increased security presence. These shifts reflect our changing society and underscore the importance of having both supplies and skills. Do you know how to cook rice from scratch? Can you bake bread without a recipe? Many younger people lack these fundamental survival skills, leaving them vulnerable during extended emergencies. The time to develop these abilities is now, when resources are available and you have time to practice, not during a crisis when internet tutorials are inaccessible. Your homework is twofold: evaluate your situational awareness practices and assess your emergency preparedness, both in supplies and knowledge. Include your entire family in this process—everyone needs basic skills and understanding. Whether you're a seasoned prepper or just starting out, remember that awareness and preparation are ongoing practices, not one-time events. Want to enhance your preparedness skills? Come check out our range classes covering everything from non-ballistic self-defense to advanced tactical training. Your future self will thank you for the time invested today. Beyond the Bugout Bag: Prepping for Spring
2025/04/20
Send us a text Spring brings a critical transition period for anyone concerned with self-reliance and emergency preparedness. The warming weather signals it's time to reevaluate your supplies, update your plans, and reconsider your approach to personal safety in an increasingly uncertain world. The warning signs at local grocery stores can't be ignored—shelves with growing gaps, eggs priced at $11 a dozen, increased security measures for everyday items, and fewer staff. These aren't reasons to panic, but practical indicators that thoughtful preparation now can prevent hardship later. As one prepper wisely notes, the goal isn't to hoard 500 packages of toilet paper, but to methodically build resilience through careful planning. Power solutions deserve special attention, with more preparedness-minded individuals shifting to solar options that avoid the storage challenges and noise signature of gas generators. Food preservation strategies gain importance during power disruptions, with innovative approaches like utilizing medical-grade ice packs to extend refrigeration capabilities. The hierarchy of emergency food consumption (refrigerated items first, frozen foods next, and dehydrated supplies last) maximizes resources during extended emergencies. Don't overlook the importance of seasonings—spices like black pepper, cinnamon, and cayenne not only make survival food more palatable but also offer medicinal benefits. Perhaps most significantly, the philosophy of preparedness continues evolving beyond political boundaries. The lone wolf survivalist model gives way to community-based resilience, recognizing that diverse skills within a prepared network provide greater security than any individual could achieve alone. As one preparedness expert bluntly observes, "You may have 10,000 rounds of ammunition, but if you break your leg and nobody helps you, you're going to get gangrene and die." True resilience comes from balancing self-sufficiency with strategic community connections. Ready to strengthen your preparedness posture this spring? Start Small on your Prepping Journey
2025/03/07
Send us a text A Video Version is also available on YouTube A harrowing survival story opens this eye-opening episode as we learn how a 79-year-old skier survived a night in the Montana backcountry using only basic survival skills and minimal equipment. His experience dramatically illustrates why proper preparation matters when stepping out your front door—especially as global supply chains weaken and store shelves show initial gaps. From tiny keychain lights to comprehensive bug-out strategies, we explore the spectrum of personal preparedness tools that can save lives when unexpected emergencies strike. The humble flashlight serves as our starting point—whether it's an $11 micro light that lasts a decade or a powerful rechargeable behemoth capable of charging phones during power outages. We examine fire starters, whistles, compasses, and other compact tools that easily fit in your pocket, console, or everyday carry. Beyond gear, we delve into the critical nature of family emergency planning. With parents typically working in separate locations while children attend school or daycare, coordinating meeting points and establishing communication protocols becomes essential. The episode emphasizes teaching children safety measures like verification code words and making everyone feel invested in the family's emergency preparations.  The preparedness window is closing faster than many realize. Now is the time to assemble supplies, develop skills, and create thoughtful plans—whether for bugging out or hunkering down. Emergency preparation isn't about fear; it's about responsibility. As we navigate increasingly uncertain times, becoming your own first responder until professional help arrives isn't optional—it's necessary.
