208 - Espíritu by Aiden Thomas
2026/09/30
In Episode 208, we're talking about Espíritu by Aiden Thomas, the sequel to Cemetery Boys, which we talked about way back in Episode 57!  It was so much fun to be back with these characters and in their world of spirits and brujx. We wish we could have spent more time with them. Maybe a book for our girl Maritza next? We would be all over that! Show Notes Episode 57, where we talked about Cemetery Boys, was our very first FUJK episode after abandoning our previous plan to discuss a certain wizard series. We've read so many incredible books by trans authors since then! Do you believe in spirits? On record, we now know that Jette wants her funeral to be an exact recreation of the My Chemical Romance "Helena" music video. If you want to know more about the grandma who had paper Ouija boards handed out at her funeral with a note saying, "Let's keep in touch," here you go. No, but seriously, please can Maritza get a book next? Our next episode is our 8th (!!!) anniversary episode.  After that, we'll chatting about Never Whistle At Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology, just in time for spooky season. And don't forget to read along with us for our book club, Moonflow by Bitter Karella. Episode coming in early November! Other Books Mentioned Somebody Is Walking on Your Grave by Mariana Enriquez
207 - What We Found Instead - An Interview with Heidi Reimer
2026/09/16
In Episode 207, we have a wonderful chat with Canadian author Heidi Reimer about her new novel, What We Found Instead, as well as writing routines, plotting, and book recommendations. Show Notes It was so fantastic to have the chance to talk to Heidi about her process writing this book and learning how to craft a novel. Find Heidi’s debut novel, The Mother Act, wherever books are sold. Online you can find Heidi on her website, www.heidireimer.com, on Instagram @heidi.c.reimer, and on Substack, The Visibility Letters. Heidi also coaches writers through the Sarah Selecky Writing School, where she offers coaching for first drafts and revisions. Heidi Reimer’s Recommendations Chasing Summer by Frankie Scott Wild Hope by Joan Thomas  The Wild Beneath by Kelly Anderson God of the Woods by Liz Moore Sterling Point (2026-) Other Books Mentioned Long Bright River by Liz Moore
206 - The Dream Thieves (Graphic Novel) by Maggie Stiefvater
2026/09/02
In episode 206, we talk about our latest book club book, the graphic novel adaptation of The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater, illustrated by Sas Milledge. This is the second book in The Raven Cycle series, and this one may have convinced Jette to pick up the original novels! Show Notes This is Gen’s favourite of the four books in the series because it’s Ronan’s book. We talked about the first graphic novel adaptation in Episode 180. We also read Sas Milledge’s debut graphic novel, Mamo, in Episode 194. Our next book club is Jette’s pick and we’re reading Moonflow by Bitter Karella. More creepy mushrooms and fungus! Next week we’ll be chatting with Heidi Reimer about her new novel, What We Found Instead. And to close out September, we’re revisiting an old favourite and reading the long-awaited sequel to Cemetery Boys—Espíritu by Aiden Thomas. Other Books Mentioned Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV
205 - Summer Hangout 2026
2026/08/19
Summer is (finally) winding down, and it's time for a hangout episode! As you know, we are not made for the heat, so we've slowed down a bit on the reading and the writing—but don't worry, we're still absolutely crushing our reading goals. Show Notes Gen has done a surprising number of summer activities, and we've even done a bunch together, including a baseball game, a book launch, and a visit to Toronto's Book Bar. Is baseball the most romantic sport?  We had such a great time at the book launch for Fossil Feud by Maggie North, facilitated by Stephanie Archer and hosted by Hopeless Romantic books. We even made a new book friend! Next on our bookish event list is Word on the Street, which Gen can finally go to this year. It's happening September 26 & 27 at David Pecaut Square by Roy Thompson Hall. If you're in Toronto, it's free to attend and always a great time for book lovers, so definitely check it out! Our next episode will be a book club episode, talking about The Dream Thieves graphic novel adaptation by Maggie Stiefvater and illustrated by Sas Milledge.  After that, we'll be chatting with Heidi Reimer about her new book What We Found Instead. It's been a while since we've done an interview and we can't wait! Books and Authors Mentioned Windy City series by Liz Tomforde Paisley Hope: Training the Heart; Riding the High; Freeing the Wild Anderson in Bloom by Jennifer Dugan Romancing the Beat by Gwen Hayes A Spell to Wake the Dead by Nicole Lesperance Catherine Cowles: Delicate Escape; Broken Harbor; Into the Fading Twilight; Beautiful Exile The Someday Garden by Ashley Poston Love You to Death by Jenna Lavine The Hotshot by Piper Rayne Dearly Departed by Chip Pons Clockers by Richard Price Shoot Your Shot by Lexi Lafleur Dinner for Vampire by Bethany Joy Lenz Behind the Net by Stephanie Archer What Move the Dead by T Kingfisher In Stormy Weather by Chelsea Curto Dead But Dreaming of Electric Sheep by Paul Tremblay Face Off by Chelsea Curto Just for the Plot by Meghan Quinn Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand The Prospects by KT Hoffman Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman The Dead of Summer by Ryan La Sala The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson
204 - What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
2026/08/05
In episode 204, Gen and Jette freak out over mushrooms and T. Kingfisher's What Moves the Dead, book 1 in the Sworn Soldier series. Please send Jette all recos for anything fungi-related- books, cute things, forests to run to. Show Notes We both meant to read "The Fall of the House of Usher," which this book is based on, before we recorded, but unfortunately...life. It's on the list now! T. Kingfisher is the pen name of Ursula Vernon. She writes books under both names, differentiating between her work for children (Vernon) and adults (Kingfisher). Our next episode is our summer hangout. Expect more mushrooms and probably (definitely) some Windy City talk. How many books in the series can Gen read before we record? After that, it's book club episode time! The Dream Thieves graphic novel adaptation is officially out, and we'll be talking about it first thing in September. Books mentioned How We End by LM JuniperMexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-GarciaThe Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan PoeWhat Feasts at Night by T. KingfisherWhat Stalks the Deep by T. Kingfisher
203 - Clockers by Richard Price (Film by Spike Lee)
2026/07/22
Episode 203 is another instalment in our Page to Screen series. This time we read Clockers by Richard Price and watched the Spike Lee film adaptation of the same name.  We loved how the book and the film each have their own distinct vibe and definitely need to watch more Spike Lee films. (And maybe rewatch The Wire?) Show Notes Richard Price has also written screenplays, including The Wire, The Deuce, and the Martin Scorsese film, The Color of Money, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. This was Mekhi Phifer's first film, and he got the part through an open casting call. In our next episode, we'll be talking about What Moves the Dead by T Kingfisher. Read along with our next book club pick, the graphic novel adaptation of The Dream Thieves by Maggie Steifvater. Other Films by Spike Lee Do the Right Thing She's Gotta Have It Jungle Fever Malcolm X BlacKkKlansman  Other Books, Authors & Films Mentioned Mystic River  Gone Baby Gone  Dennis Lehane Annihilation The Martian Jurassic Park Under the Bridge
202 - In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde
2026/07/08
In Episode 202, we talk about Jette's book club pick, In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde! As you may know, we're deep in our romance era right now—especially sports romance—and we loved Monty and Reese so much!  Show Notes In Her Own League is a spin-off of the best-selling Windy City Series, which is currently in development for a TV series! Emmett "Monty" Montgomery is definitely based on real-life MLB manager Gabe Kapler. You're welcome. Interconnected romance series for the win every time! We can't wait for Liz Tomforde's next series, Wilder Woods, which takes place in California and follows the Wilder siblings. The first instalment, Cardinal Rule, is set to come out next year. So many of these romance authors are Canadian, which we love. We're stoked to be going to the book launch for Fossil Feud by Maggie North, in conversation with Stephanie Archer, author of the hockey romance series Vancouver Storm. Hosted, of course, by Hopeless Romantic Books. In our next episode, we're taking a wildly different turn for our Page to Screen series by reading Clockers by Richard Price and watching the 1995 Spike Lee film adaptation. After that, we'll be doing some summer spooky reading with What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher. Our next book club pick is Gen's, and it's The Dream Thieves graphic novel adaptation of Book 2 of The Raven Cycle Series by Maggie Steifvater, illustrated by Sas Milledge. It's coming out August 4.  Other Books and Authors Mentioned Helena Hunting Off Campus Series by Elle Kennedy  Elsie Silver Becka Mack  Heated Rivalry/Game Changers Series by Rachel Reid
201 - Anderson In Bloom by Jennifer Dugan
2026/06/24
It's the end of June, which means it's time for our annual Pride episode! This year, we're talking about Anderson in Bloom by Jennifer Dugan, since we're both deep in our romance era and we love us some queer joy.  Show Notes Is it time for us to move to a small coastal town and live our best storybook romance lives? Jenifer Prince does the cover art for this book. Check out more of her fantastic lesbian art on IG @jeniferrprince For more romance goodness, be sure to listen to episode 199, all about the romance genre. We're continuing with the romance theme for our next episode with In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde. And we're even going to a baseball game soon to get in the full spirit of things! 200 - 200th Episode Hangout Celebration
2026/06/10
It's our 200th episode! What better way to celebrate than by talking about all the books we've been reading? Show Notes While we've already passed 200 episodes on our other podcast, Teenage Daydream, this one is extra special because it was our first podcast. Sadly the cafe where Another Book on the Shelf was born—Page One—is no longer, but hopefully they'll open in another location soon. Shout out to Hopeless Romantic bookshop and Stormbound Books for running the coolest book rebinding workshops.  Artemis II got us through the beginning of April. For more details about all the romance we've been reading, make sure to listen our episode dedicated to all things romance! Pizza Hut, please make all our dreams come true and have an adult version of Book It. Our next episode will be our June Pride episode, and we're keeping it romantic with Anderson in Bloom by Jennifer Dugan. And don't forget to read along with our book club pick, In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde. 199 - Romance Reads
2026/05/27
In Episode 199, we're talking about a genre we never thought we'd be talking about: Romance! We've both fallen into the romance genre pretty hard lately, so we thought it was about time we had a proper discussion about some of our favourite tropes, authors, and why we keep coming back to it. Show Notes If you told us when we started this podcast that we'd one day dedicate an entire episode to romance, we wouldn't have believed you, but we're so happy to be here. Truly the plot twist we never saw coming. Next episode is our 200th! We can hardly wrap our heads around it. Come hang out with us as we talk about all things Another Book on the Shelf. In keeping with the romance theme, we'll be reading Anderson in Bloom by Jennifer Dugan for our Pride episode.  And we're reading In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde for our next book club discussion, so make sure you read along! We did our best to keep track of everything we talked about, but the list of books and authors mentioned might be incomplete. Books and Authors Mentioned Sophie Kinsella Chloe Gong Rachel Reid Casey McQuiston Emily Henry Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young  Elsie Silver The Most Unusual Haunting of Edgar Lovejoy by Roan Parrish Rules for Ghosting by Shelly Jay Shore Erin Sterling Becka Mack The Windy City Series by Liz Tomforde Paisley Hope Brynne Weaver Rebel Blue Ranch Series by Lyla Sage Ashley Poston Catherine Cowles Canadian Boyfriend by Jenny Holiday Abby Jimenez Carley Fortune Peyton Corrine Chelsea Curto
198 - Orwell's Roses by Rebecca Solnit
2026/05/13
We're getting so close to our 200th episode, but first, we have a book club episode for you. In Episode 198, we're talking about Gen's pick—Orwell's Roses by Rebecca Solnit. Show Notes This book felt extremely relevant to everything happening in the world these days, like oof. Truly so many topics were covered in this book! The rise of Communism and the Soviet Union, the Spanish Civil War, the Carboniferous Era, coal mining, rose production in Colombia, and actually so much more. What a ride. Rebecca Solnit, we are so impressed with the structuring of this book. You can read Orwell's essay, "Politics and the English Language," on the Orwell Foundation website and it is very much worth the read. Don't be surprised if Gen picks Nineteen Eighty-Four as a future book club read. If you follow us on Instagram, you may know that we've fallen down the romance rabbit hole, so we decided that our next episode would be all about the romance genre. After that, it's time for our 200th episode! We still can't believe it.  Our next book club book is Jette's pick, and we're following the romance train still with In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde, which is a spin off of the extremely popular Windy City series.  Other Books and Media Mentioned The Giver by Lois Lowry The Trotsky (2009) By George Orwell: Nineteen Eighty-Four Animal Farm Down and Out in Paris and London Homage to Catalonia By Rebecca Solnit: Men Explain Things to Me Hope In the Dark A Field Guide to Getting Lost The Beginning Comes After the End
197 - M Train by Patti Smith
2026/04/29
In Episode 197, we're talking about M Train by Patti Smith, one of our forever favourite artists. This year we're making an extra effort to crush our TBRs and reading books that we both already own or have been meaning to read forever, and of course we both have more Patti Smith to read! Show Notes We loved this book, obviously, but we raged against the deckled edges the entire time. Patti Smith is living the life we both want, so we're going to figure out how to do this, too. If you haven't already, definitely read Just Kids, Patti Smith's book about her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe when they were in their twenties living in New York. And then listen to Episode 159! Patti Smith visits a few cemeteries and we were reminded of our episode about Somebody Is Walking On Your Grave by Mariana Enriquez. Our next episode is a book club episode and we'll be talking about Gen's pick, Orwell's Roses by Rebecca Solnit. Other Books & Authors Mentioned Haruki Murakami Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer The Disordered Cosmos by Chanda Prescod-Weinstein
196 - Slewfoot by Brom
2026/04/15
For Episode 196, we have another instalment in our #BookstagramMadeMeDoIt series with Slewfoot by Brom. This might be our most Bookstagram Made Me that we've ever done, because this book has been everywhere! Since we love all things witches, you know we had to read it. Show Notes We loved Abitha and Samson and support all their witchery. Brom is also an artist and full colour paintings are included in Slewfoot, which was especially helpful for picturing Forest, Sky, and Creek with their strange child faces in the mouths of animals. Brom has done film concept art for Galaxy Quest (1999), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Scooby Doo (2002), and Van Helsing (2004). He has never taken any formal art classes. In an effort to crush our TBR, we're reading books we both have on our shelves, and so for our next episode we'll be talking about M Train by Patti Smith. Don't forget to read along with our book club book, Orwell's Roses by Rebecca Solnit, which we'll be talking about in early May.
195 - Spring Hangout 2026
2026/04/01
In Episode 195, we're officially wrapping up our 2025 reading goals and chatting about what we've been up to the last three months. (Surviving, mostly!) Lots of books are being read and writing plans are cooking! The real new year starts in spring anyway. Show Notes Jette is absolutely crushing her reading goals! And we both may need to update some of our Storygraph goals for 2026 because we're way ahead already. We visited Hopeless Romantic and the Hopeless Romantic/Little Ghosts crossover store at Union Station in the last few months. If you're in Toronto, we definitely recommend checking them out! It turns out horror and romance are a perfect pair. Since we have a Romance episode coming up at the end of May, we tried to curb our romance talk, but we will be doing a deep dive soon enough! In our next episode, we'll be talking about Slewfoot by Brom as part of our #BookstagramMadeMeDoIt series, since we've been seing it everywhere! After that, we're attempting to tackle our TBRs and reading M Train by Patti Smith, which we both have physical copies of. That episode will be out April 29. And don't forget to read along with our current book club, Orwell's Roses by Rebecca Solnit. Books & Authors Mentioned The Windy City Series by Liz Tomforde Elsie Silver A Five Letter Word for Love by Amy James Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy A Box Full of Darkness by Simone St. James This Is a Safe Space by Lucinda Berry Crushmore: Essays on Love, Loss, and Coming-of-Age by Sophie Ansari, Nava Kavelin, and Penn Badgley Rebel Blue Ranch Series by Lyla Sage Soul Searching by Lyla Sage Playing for Keeps series by Becka Mack When We Spoke to the Dead: How Ghosts Gave American Women Their Voice by Ilise S. Carter Wells Ranch Series by Bailey Hannah Silver Pines Ranch Series by Paisley Hope All the Missing Pieces by Catherine Cowles Anderson in Bloom by Jennifer Dugan Passing by Nella Larson The Creative Act by Rick Rubin  The Fountain by Casey Scieszka Spoiled Milk by Avery Curran The Changeling by Victor LaValle The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone Game Changers Series by Rachel Reid Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir The Lottery by Shirley Jackson The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand My Heart Is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones
194 - Mamo by Sas Milledge
2026/03/18
In Episode 194, we chat about the YA graphic novel Mamo by Sas Milledge. It's her debut graphic novel, originally released as a five-issue miniseries and follows hedge witch Orla O'Reilly, as she and local Jo Manalo try to fix the chaotic magic in Heresden. Show Notes We first came across Sas Milledge's work in the graphic novel adaptation of The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, which we talked about in Episode 180.  The next instalment of The Raven Cycle adaptations, The Dream Thieves. is coming out August 4. Orla O'Reilly is giving Ellie Sattler in Jurassic Park, which of course we loved. It turns out that the Jim Hensen project Sas Milledge worked on, was in fact Labyrinth related. She was one of the illustrators for Beyond the Goblin City, a graphic novel collection of short stories that take place in the world of Labyrinth. She also worked on The Lost Carnival: A Dick Grayson Graphic Novel for DC Comics. Other Works Mentioned Junior High by Tegan and Sara Quin, illustrated by Tillie Walden The Night Eaters by Marjorie Liu, illustrated by Sana Takeda
