A Jew from Alexandria who became Kamel Amin Thaabet, a Syrian patriot so trusted he toured the Golan fortifications with the generals. This is the story of Eli Cohen, the man who brought exile home. In this series from The Jewish Story, we follow Eli Cohen's heroic journey from the contradiction of exile in Egypt, through the Mossad's training, to the heart of Syria's ruling circle, and finally to the scaffold in Marjah Square. Along the way we ask the questions every Jewish hero must answer: What is good? Whom do you serve? What does mesirut nefesh, going beyond the limits of self for creation's good, really cost? And can one person change history?

Why did Daniel open his window and pray toward Jerusalem three times a day — in a city that wasn’t his, toward a Temple that no longer stood? In this first new episode from The Jewish Story, we follow Daniel from the ashes of Jerusalem to the courts of Babylon and Persia: the king’s table, Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, the writing on the wall, and the lions’ den. Along the way we explore Malchut — kingship, the power to create context — on three scales: the self, the community, and Malchut Shamayim, the kingdom of heaven. Daniel’s story asks the questions every Jewish hero must answer: What is good? Whom do you serve? Where do you take your stand?
