In 1 John 4:17-21, John says that God’s love gives believers confidence, not fear, when they think about the day Jesus returns to judge the world. On that day everyone will be judged by what they have done. Our works don’t save us; only faith in Jesus does. But real faith always shows itself in a changed life, the way a healthy tree is known by its fruit. John names that fruit in one word: love, the kind that keeps flowing to others even when they hurt us, because it comes from God and not from us. This love can’t be produced by fear or shame. It grows only as we return to its source and believe how much God loves us in Jesus. When that love fills us and spills over to others, fear of judgment is driven out, and we can face the last day the way Jesus faced going home to his Father.

In 1 John 4:1–6, John calls believers to test every spirit and exercise discernment because not everything that sounds true or spiritual comes from God. We must be rooted in Scripture and depend on the Holy Spirit to recognize falsehood, especially teachings that distort who Jesus truly is, because the Jesus we believe in will become the Jesus we follow. But discernment isn't meant to make us fearful, it's meant to make us faithful. We can live confident, Spirit-empowered lives every single day, not because of our own abilities, but because He who lives in us is greater than he who is in the world.

In 1 John 3:19-24, John speaks to the believer who's failing every test in the letter and whose own heart won't let up, and tells him that God is greater than his heart and knows everything, including the sin he's crying over right now, and then gets that same believer up off the floor into a life of confidence, answered prayer, and obedience that actually pleases God.

Cain did not kill Abel over anything Abel did; he killed him because Abel was accepted and he was not. John calls that envy hatred, and hatred murder, because envy grieves a brother's good and warms at his loss. The nerve is the Christian who knows the cross, believes the inheritance is his, and still feels the cold drop when someone in the next row gets the marriage, the promotion, the house, and asks, "What is wrong with me?" Envy disfigures how he sees himself, his brother, and finally God, whose grace begins to feel too light for what he lacks. John's cure is unexpected. He says we know love because Christ laid down his life for us, and in the same breath says we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers, because envy runs on the assumption that you are the one who lacks, and pouring out is the one thing that disproves it. Up close, the envied brother becomes a person with wounds; with an open hand, you find you were never empty; and in that motion the gospel you could only recite becomes something you can feel the weight of.

Every Christian has in them the capacity for church planting. Meaning every genuine follower of Jesus has in them in them the same basic building blocks of missional community. Every Christian has the same faith, same hope, same Spirit, same fundamental calling. Different Christians are blessed with different gifting and functions. All are necessary for the church of God to flourish. Take out one, and the church will suffer. While not every Christian should become a head pastor or a lead church planter, every Christian is called to the business of sharing the gospel and multiplying the kingdom of God in the church.

1 John 3:1-10 exposes a false gospel: one decision settles salvation and the direction of a life afterward means nothing. John divides the world by paternity, children of the devil and children of God, and the mark of the devil's children is not that they sin but that they make a home in it, a settled trajectory cut loose from any Father. That raises the question the passage forces, since chapter 1 calls anyone claiming to be without sin a liar and chapter 3 says no one born of God keeps on sinning, and the nerve underneath it is the person who has fallen enough times to quietly conclude that this does not work for them and that staying down is the honest option. John's answer lands exactly there. The difference is not falling but staying: for the child of God sin is the stumble and not the walk, and the cringe the morning after, the refusal to be at peace with it, is itself the evidence of the Father's seed, a momentum that will not let a person settle where they landed. Like the runaway on the street corner who looks identical to the orphan beside him but keeps dreaming of a house he belongs to, the child of God cannot stay down because there is a home. And what pulls a person out of the ditch is not white-knuckled effort but beholding what kind of love the Father has given, a Father who in a world where unwanted infants were exposed looked at the deformed and dying and named us and kept us at the cost of His only Son. The prodigal did not become someone else in the pig pen; he remembered he had a father. So the charge is to become who you already are by returning to that love constantly, like coming up for air, until it is grooved deeper than the world's pull and you always know whose child you are and where home is.

John says the antichrist is not one person coming at the end of the world. It is a spirit that has been at work since the first century, and it has produced many antichrists, including people who once sat in John's own church. Some of them deny Jesus outright, but the most dangerous ones revise him, telling you that what you know about Jesus is not quite enough. That is what the Affirmer, the Improver, and the Watchman all do: they find a place where you feel you are lacking and offer to fill it with something other than Christ. The crowds in John 6 walked away from Jesus for the same reason, because they wanted bread and he offered himself. John's answer is that you already have everything you need: the truth you heard from the beginning and the Holy Spirit who anointed you to treasure it. So guard yourself by holding onto those old truths, testing every voice by the Word, and letting the Spirit turn what you know into what you love and obey.

John writes to people he has already called forgiven, victorious, and children of the Father, and only then does he tell them not to love the world. He is not warning them off creation or people, but off a whole spirit of life running against God: the flesh craving consolation, the eyes craving what belongs to someone else, and the pride craving to be seen as somebody. He calls those desires foreign, born of another father, so that a Christian carrying them raises the question of whose child he actually is. Then he warns that the world hosting those desires is already under sentence, passing away in the present tense, and that anyone still clutching it may find himself going down with what he refused to release. But the diagnosis in verse 15 is not only a threat, it is an explanation: you love the world because the love of the Father is not in you. Which means the way out was never self-hatred or gritted teeth, but a Father whose love is rich enough to make the world's offer taste bland.

Being known by our love means you have to love your enemy. And sometimes loving your enemy means loving your neighbor.

John writes to people who have found ways to manage their sin without ever admitting it, either by claiming they have outgrown it or by claiming it no longer touches them. Both moves are named as lies, because the truth is not in anyone who says he knows God while walking in the dark. The alternative is not better performance but confession, since anyone who does sin has an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. This advocate does not argue innocence or plead extenuating circumstances; he stands as the propitiation for sin and declares the guilty already paid for. That is why God is called faithful and just to forgive, not merely lenient, because charging a debt twice would be the injustice. Safety comes first and honesty follows, which is what it means to walk in the light and keep his commandments.

John writes to help the church recognize the Gnostic heresy. The Gnostics are trying to take away our confidence that we can know God through reading scripture, and are claiming that there are only a few elite spiritually sensitive people who can lead others into enlightenment. This creates an inner circle at church that everyone must try to get into in order to have spiritual knowledge. This creates a lot of church hurt. However, by putting our confidence in scripture and in Jesus, we can contend with the Gnostics and show how we can thrive as humble Christians.

Matthew 25:31-46 says that when Jesus returns, everyone is gathered and separated, and there are only two places to go. Hell is not devils with pitchforks. It is the full wrath of God with no filter, and the weeping and gnashing of teeth shows that the people there are still angry at God, still refusing him, which is why the door is locked from the inside. Heaven is the opposite. It is God's own joy, endless and always new, with none of the "yeah, but" that trails every good thing in this life. That is why the objection cuts both ways. If heaven is God's joy, it is only good news to people who actually want God. The passage answers who gets in, and the answer is not that they fed the poor well enough. The "least of these my brothers" are Jesus' own messengers, and receiving them means receiving the message they carried. Everything you owed for offending an infinite God, Jesus paid on the cross, so people in hell get exactly what they deserve and people in heaven get what they never earned. And notice that the sheep argue with the verdict. They do not recognize the list of good things read back to them, because they were never building a case. Their joys had simply been rewired by grace, and the kindness came out as overflow. That is what being ready looks like. Not a record you assembled, but a heart that already delights in what God delights in.

Our suffering makes us like Christ. The Bible does not give us a perfect answer to life’s biggest questions, it gives us a perfect person. The person of Jesus.

Isaac stands in a famine on the very land God commanded him to stay on, rich in everything but water, tempted to look south to Egypt where the ground looks green. Genesis 26 cuts off both escapes: dryness is not proof of disobedience, and refreshing is not in the next place. God says stay and dig, and what Isaac finds is his father’s old well, filled in with sand by an enemy. That is the answer for anyone who has come to church for years without feeling God move and assumes the answer must be something new. The water never left; the well got stopped up, and the digging is repentance. And the grace is that the enemy filled the wells, not God. He kept the gospel there for you, and the Spirit is willing to give it back today.
