You are not alone. -- In our hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan, a toxic sermon was preached by Pastor Terry Murphy at Regina Victory Church and uploaded to social media. Word spread quickly, with many people disgusted by his comparison of the LGBTQ2S+ community to pedophiles and his blaming of high suicide rates in Trans kids on societal acceptance, rather than the rejection of christians like himself. And as much as lots were disgusted with his comments, we recognize that it's an all too common sentiment within church walls. Dallas and I have long been passionate about LGBTQ2S+ inclusion. We knew we couldn't stay silent about this, especially with it happening in our own backyard. These words spoken so flippantly are evil and have no place in someone claiming to preach the love of God. There is no love in these words, much as Pastors like Terry claim otherwise while trying to manipulate God into their own hateful image. We recognized that as allies, our role wasn't to lead the charge, but to offer support and join alongside. So we wondered how best to use our Shipwreck Over Safety platform to best challenge this toxic theology. Then we met Cassie. Cassie shared with us about coming to terms with being a lesbian in a conservative Baptist church, and how her parents were removed from leadership simply because her dad wore a Pride shirt one Sunday morning in support of her. The same church that Cassie and her family grew up in and dedicated their lives to rejected them. All because they could not see past a fathers show of support for his daughter. But we all know it runs much deeper than just that. Cassie graciously offered to share her story with us. It paints a tragic picture of what happens when churches reject the image of God in the LGBTQ2S+ community, but also a beautiful picture of a families love for their child. A true representation of God's love. What would you do if you had to choose between your child and your church?

We invited one of our favourite hockey people on the pod to talk hockey and faith, and now he's now simply one of our favourite people! "Stick to sports" is thrown any time people don't want to talk politics or justice in sports. We discuss the reasons why and why it's important not to follow that advice. We talked about inclusivity in hockey and whether hockey really is for everyone. Ian also shares about his evolving faith, and the challenges faced while dealing with his wife's cancer diagnosis. It's a 101 class on how faith groups should NOT handle these situations. We also talk being allies, and what that should look like when it comes to joining or staying in non-affirming churches. If you're like most christian folks (current or former), you are likely familiar with the Contemporary Christian Music genre. Music has a power unlike anything else in this world. It can beautifully connect us to something deeper within ourselves. But when it's packaged and marketed for christian consumption and separated from so-called "secular" music, it can also be manipulative, shallow, and not at all about Jesus. Of course, it's not all bad. But this strange christian sub-culture is an odd beast to reckon with. We are joined by Jamie Kocur, a brilliant singer, songwriter and author. We discuss her book, "My CCM Soundtracked Life." She walks us through her relationship to CCM music and the ways in which it shaped her. We talk about the latest Bethel and Sean Feucht madness and why Michael W. Smith felt it necessary to hold a concert in the middle of a pandemic. Most of us have a box our concept of God fits in. If you're like either of us SOS hosts, you grew up in the Evangelical church believing there was one way to follow God. Read your Bible. Pray. Go to church as often as possible. Be a straight, white, male... At least that would be a safe assumption if you took your cues from the vast majority of church leadership. We're grateful for this conversation with Minister Mitchell Anderson, a Minister in the United Church. Mitchell has a deep and rich faith, informed by the ferocious love of God and the gentle voice of Jesus he discovered when at his lowest point. We talk about his faith and how its informed by him being both gay and Indigenous. Mitchell beautifully describes a God that is always reforming, is never static, and already at work in the world. Our job isn't to lead, but to join in wherever that work is happening. Even if that means doing so outside our church walls. Listen up!
