FootballTalk - Episode 253: Life at the top of League One, Rotherham United's troubles and reasons for Leeds United to be cheerful
2026/10/22
On this week’s show, The YP’s football writers Leon Wobschall and Stuart Rayner join host Mark Singleton to discuss the latest news from the Yorkshire football scene. They start by assessing Bradford City’s progress under new manager Michael Duff and how they are evolving since Graham Alexander’s departure, paying particular attention to the recent games against Stevenage and Burton Albion. League One rivals Sheffield Wednesday found their scoring touch again at home – hammering Wimbledon 5-0 – enabling them to remain part of the top six picture in League One, but howe can they ensure they are scoring goals on a more regular basis? But it is Huddersfield Town who are currently the top Yorkshire team in League One, wins at Plymouth and at home to Peterborough in the past week ensuring they sit second in the table. Can their form be sustained under Martin Drury? Problems continue to mount, however, for Rotherham United and new boss Alex Bruce in League Two – a 2-2 draw against Newport leaving them hovering just above the bottom two. What can be done to revive their season?  In the Premier League, Leeds United had to settle for a point from their Elland Road clash against fierce rivals Manchester United, but while their was frustration for the Whites, the panel highlight how they can potentially benefit from the European adventures of their top-flight rivals. And, finally, Leon pores over his choice for the Yorkshire Player of the Week, while Stuart picks out his standout Team of the Week.
FootballTalk - Episode 252: Assessing Leeds United and Hull City's Premier League return
2026/10/14
After the end of the extended international break, The Yorkshire Post’s football writers, Leon Wobschall and Stuart Rayner, join host Mark Singleton to cast their eye over the return to action of Yorkshire’s Premier League and EFL clubs. They start with the top-flight clash for Leeds United at Arsenal, Daniel Farke’s side falling to a 2-1 defeat after taking the lead in the 55th minute. They then look at the all-Yorkshire clash between Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday which saw The Owls stage a late comeback to claim a point in an entertaining 2-2 draw which sees both sides maintain pace with the leading pack in the division. Hull City played out a 2-2 draw with Everton to extend their promising start to the campaign, one they will hope to extend at Craven Cottage next time out against Fulham. And finally, this week sees Stuart pick his Player of the Week before Leon determined who the White Rose’s Team of the Week was.
FootballTalk - Episode 251: Michael Duff in at Bradford City, Huddersfield Town's progress and was the extended international break a success?
2026/10/07
On this week’s show, host Mark Singleton is joined by The YP’s Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall to pore over the latest news from the Yorkshire football scene. They start off at Valley parade following Tuesday’s announcement that former Barnsley and Huddersfield Town manager Michael Duff would succeed Graham Alexander as the boss at Bradford City. They then turn their attention to Yorkshire and League One rivals Huddersfield Town who, under Martin Drury have made an encouraging start to the 2026-27 campaign and sit third in the standings – just a point off a top two containing leaders Plymouth and the Bantams – following the weekend’s 3-1 win over Burton Albion. Finally, the panel consider whether the extended international break has been a success – both for national teams and the clubs affected by not playing as a result of players being away on international duty.
FootballTalk - Episode 250: England's ups and downs, Bradford City's loss and the League Two story so far for Rotherham and York
2026/10/01
On this week’s show The Yorkshire Post’s football writing team of Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall start off by joining host Mark Singleton to discuss the extended international break and England’s performances against Spain – in defeat – and the Czech Republic – in victory. They then turn their attentions closer to home and, not surprisingly, start at Valley Parade after Graham Alexander’s departure from League One Bradford City to Preston North End in the Championship – along with assistant Chris Lucketti. They also look at the leading candidates to take over the Bantams’ helm. The panel finish off by turning their attention to League Two and the start to the 2026-27 season made by Rotherham United and York City.
FootballTalk - Episode 249: VHow the extended international break impacts on Hull, Leeds, Blades and Boro
2026/09/24
On this week’s show, Stuart Rayner and Tom Coates join host Mark Singleton to discuss the latest news and developments from the Yorkshire football scene. We start this week with the clash between Hull City and Newcastle which ended in a 2-1 defeat and ended the Tigers’ unbeaten start to the season. While frustrating for manager Sergej Jakirovic and his players, there are still a wealth of positives to be had for the club going into the elongated international break. Leeds United will also be going into the three-week break on the back of a strong 2026-27 campaign so far, extending their unbeaten start with a 0-0 draw at home to Crystal Palace.  The panel discuss how the three-week hiatus can benefit both Leeds and Hull with various players away on international duty and how each manager can best use the time they have ahead of a return to action in mid-October. We also carry out a review how Sheffield United and Middlesbrough – our two Yorkshire teams in the Championship – will view their respective starts to the campaign. League One is more congested in terms of Yorkshire clubs – Barnsley, Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday – and we also cast an eye over how those teams have fared in the opening weeks. Finally, Tom is handed the task of picking his Player of the Week before Stuart plumps for his Yorkshire Team of the Week.
FootballTalk - Episode 248: Leeds United, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday and their 2026-27 stories so far
2026/09/17
On this week’s show, Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton and start off by looking at Sheffield Wednesday’s start to life back in League One, currently sitting top of the standings after six games with four wins to their name under Henrik Pedersen. Near-neighbours Sheffield United suffered a blow when going down 1-0 against Wolves and although they sit mid-table, can their start to the 2026-27 Championship campaign can still be viewed as promising – or not? Leeds United delivered a statement performance with a resounding 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Elland Road on Monday, catapulting them up to third in the standings. Can they now build on their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign? Middlesbrough were left frustrated at just taking a point from their midweek tussle with visitors Millwall – but there remains plenty to be positive about, given they sit third in the standings and with the top four all locked on 14 points. Finally, Stuart is required to pick a Player of the Week, while Leon singles out a Team of the Week from Yorkshire’s 11 Premier League and EFL clubs.
FootballTalk - Episode 247: Barnsley, Hull City and Bradford City and the reasons behind their promising starts to 2026-27
2026/09/10
On this week’s show, The YP football writing duo of Leon Wobschall and Stuart Rayner join host Mark Singleton to discuss the latest news and issues from Yorkshire’s Premier League and EFL clubs. They start by looking at Barnsley who claimed all three points when they paid a visit to Blackpool in a 2-1 win in midweek – only to then slip to a 5-1 defeat at home to Stevenage last weekend. But has it still been an impressive start under Daniel Stendel? Hull City have enjoyed a promising start to life back in the Premier League – their 0-0 draw at home to Aston Villa meaning they remain unbeaten after three games. They lost their first game of the season – as well as conceded their first goals - in the League Cup at Sunderland. There is also time to discuss Bradford City’s solid League One campaign – sat fourth inn the standings after their 1-0 win over Mansfield Town at the weekend, while Sheffield United’s gutsy 2-1 Championship win at Blackburn Rovers in midweek offers Chris Wilder hope of being among the promotion candidates later down the line, despite going through a frustrating summer transfer window. This week, Leon is asked for his Yorkshire-based Player of the Week, while Stuart comes up with his more impressive Team of the Week.
FootballTalk - Episode 246: Transfer window winners and losers in Yorkshire - The YP FootballTalk Podcast
2026/09/10
The summer transfer window proved to be another heady cocktail of blockbusting deals and late, late agreements as Yorkshire’s clubs looked to try and set themselves up for a successful campaign. In the Premier League, Leeds United and Hull City adopted contrasting approaches, with the Tigers confirming six new arrivals on the final day of transfer activity, taking their net spend past the £100m mark.  Leeds were more reserved but still spent big, the most notable additions being goalkeeper James Trafford signed for £40m from Manchester City, while two new arrivals joined on deadline day to take their number of summer signings up to seven. The signing of Eintracht Frankfurt's jet-paced winger Jean-Matteo Bahoya ended the club's search for a new striking option, while Nice left-back Melvin Bard completed his move on an initial loan. All of Yorkshire’s clubs were busy with ins and outs and Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall joining host Mark Singleton to also discuss the deals for our Championship, League One and League Two clubs and who got the best deals – in either direction. This week, Stuart is given the task of choosing a Player of the Week, leaving Leon to determine a Team of the Week.

Yorkshire derbies between Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City and Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley come under the spotlight, as does the stunning start made by Hull City on their return to the top-flight when they beat visitors Manchester United 2-0 at home.  Leeds United also got their season off to the perfect start, winning twice at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground in four days, following up a 1-0 win in the league on Saturday with a 2-0 midweek triumph in the League Cup.  Doncaster’s Cup defeat to Championship Middlesbrough also comes up for discussion before Leon picks out his Player of the Week and Stuart selects the standout Team of the Week.

FootballTalk - Episode 239: England's World Cup chances hit by reality check PLUS Yorkshire transfer news latest
2026/06/24
On this week’s show, Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to assess the latest World Cup action, focussing on England’s 0-0 draw with Ghana in Boston in their second group game.  Given their two performances so far, what are the chances of England going all the way in North America and ending that 60 years of hurt?  Elsewhere, the panel discuss recent transfer moves involving Yorkshire clubs, including forward Alfie May’s loan move to Doncaster Rovers from Huddersfield Town and the switch of midfielder Adam Phillips from Barnsley to League One rivals, Bradford City.
FootballTalk - Episode 238: England's World Cup promise and the way ahead for Millers, Owls and Reds
2026/06/18

FootballTalk - Episode 237: Hull City realise Premier League dream, what next for Leeds United and England's World Cup squad assessed
2026/05/29
On this week’s show, The YP’s chief football writer Stuart Rayner joins host Mark Singleton to reflect on the all-Yorkshire Championship play-off final between Hull City and Middlesbrough at Wembley last Saturday – a game that was settled by a late Oli McBurnie goal which took the Tigers back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017. Leeds United lost their final game of the Premier League season when going down 3-0 at West Ham United who, despite the win, were still relegated to the Championship. But the loss does not detract from what has been a positive return to the top-flight for Leeds under Daniel Farke – who was able to keep a promoted side in the division for the first time in his coaching career. The panel reflect on the highs of the 2025-26 campaign for the Whites and what they need to do during the coming summer months to ensure they strengthen their position. What was for some people a ‘controversial’ England World Cup squad selection by Thomas Tuchel also comes under the spotlight, as does Oli McBurnie’s omission from the Scotland squad despite a memorable season with Hull in the Championship. Anton Stach’s failure to make the cut for the Germany squad is also discussed.
