Wests Tigers Podcast 0304
2024/02/25
Bugger! Wests Tigers reverted to the team that scooped up consecutive wooden spoons in Saturday night's trial against the Dragons. Despite a mostly much more positive showing the week before in New Zealand, Wests Tigers took to the field in Mudgee with a lack of intensity and got shown up by a side many predict to finish low on the ladder this year. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes is joined by Steve Stretton and Garry Watson for a look at what went wrong. Thank you to our Wests Tigers Podcast Forum members for their many 'One Word' summations of that performance against St.George-Illawarra. We share those contributions on the pod. There's a discussion around the impressive debut of 18-year-old rookie, Lachlan Galvin, and we ask the question - has he done enough to grab an NRL debut in round two? We take a look at the centre and winger issues that seem to be affecting several aspects of how the side plays. Ask, has Alex Seyfarth beaten out Fonua Pole for the lock position? And who do we need to pick in the back row to get some more thrust? Also under the microscope is the revelation by interim CEO Shane Richardson that the claimed Wests Tigers membership numbers are significantly lower in reality. And Yioti's Quiz is back with some curly questions designed to test Steve and Garry's memory and knowledge of our Wests Tigers! Not a win, unfortunately, and now another break before we are back in action on the field, none the less we thank you for your ongoing support of the Wests Tigers Podcast. Wests Tigers Podcast 0303
2024/02/21
The Wests Tigers are back in action this Saturday with the second of our two pre-season games. After accounting for the Warriors over in New Zealand last Sunday, Wests Tigers and St.George Illawarra take their Pre-Season Challenge game to the beautiful NSW country town Mudgee. On this mid-week edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto is joined by Garry Watson and Steve Stretton. The guys wrap up that Warriors game, with Steve and Eddie bringing us their thoughts on the performance. Then the attention shifts to one of our favourite podcast features, a round of Buy, Sell, or Hold. There's also a preview of the Dragons match, including a look at the naming of new recruit Justin Olam in our side. Eddie, Steve, and Garry discuss what we want to see in this game and which players need to stand out to be a chance of selection in Round Two. Playing in Round Two (against the Raiders) means we will have to sit and watch every other team run around in Round One of the 2024 NRL season, including the Las Vegas doubleheader. Eddie asks if this might be a mental hurdle for our side. There's a look at the naming of Api Korisau as the club's skipper for 2024. And there's some coverage of the comments made in a podcast interview with the former Wests Tigers CEO, Justin Pascoe. It's our first official mid-week edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, we hope you enjoy it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Benji Marshall has kicked off his official coaching career with a win over the Warriors in the Preseason Challenge. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes is joined by Garry Watson and Declan McCutcheon to put the 18-16 trial game victory under the microscope. Has the game answered any questions regarding our Round 2 line-up? We take a look at some of the key positions that seemingly are still to be decided, including the halves, bench hooker/utility, back-row/lock, and wingers. Naturally, there's a good look at the performance of two of our new recruits - Jayden Sullivan and Aidan Sezer.   With Sullivan and Sezer mostly doing exactly what was expected of them, where does that leave Latu Fainu and Lachlan Galvin? Other aspects of the trial game that come up for discussion include the performance of some of our still raw, but impressive young players such as Navren Willett and Tony Sukkar. And we take a look at position number 30 in the Wests Tigers 2024 roster, asking the question - what position should we target for further strengthening based on that trial performance? It's great to be back talking football, especially a Wests Tigers victory! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hooray! The Wests Tigers (and NRL) off-season is officially over and football is about to recommence. And the Wests Tigers are in action this weekend...life is good (well, hopefully, better than it has been in recent years). On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes is joined by Declan McCutcheon and Garry Watson to preview the trial match (or pre-season challenge) against the Warriors in New Zealand on Sunday. Wests Tigers coach, Benji Marshall, has named a reasonably strong line-up for the first trial, including starting spots for star players such as Jahream Bula, Api Korisau, and David Klemmer. Youngsters like Lachlan Galvin, Tallyn Da Silva, and Navren Willett will also feature, along with new recruits such as Aidan Sezer, Jayden Sullivan, and Samuela Fainu. The boys take a deep dive into the line-up named by Benji, what was a surprise, and what this team might indicate in regards to our round two NRL side. There's a reminder too about getting your tickets on board the coach that is taking Wests Tigers fans to Bathurst. And Yioti pushes the brain power of Declan and Garry in his first Wests Tigers quiz of the new year. It's great to see the team back in action, and fantastic to be here covering all the ups and downs for you on the Wests Tigers Podcast! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We made it to the big 300! What a ride getting to this major milestone it has been for the Wests Tigers Podcast. On this special edition of the pod, Eddie Otto is in the driver's seat, joined by Joel Helmes, Steve Stretton, Declan McCutcheon, and Garry Watson. The boys talk about the 300 podcast milestone, the highlights of being a Wests Tigers fan since the pod came into being, and our highlights from the podcast. There are also some brave and bold predictions for what might happen for our team and club before the 400th, 500th, and 600th episodes. Steve also shares information on the coming fan events being held by The Ambush, and there are details on an exciting new concept being trialed this year - coach transport to Wests Tigers matches. Joel has all the details on that new concept, including how you can get your tickets to join us for a road trip to Bathurst. Then Eddie, Steve, Garry, and Declan take a deep dive into the Wests Tigers forward stocks for 2024.  This a follow-up to the last edition of the pod where the backs were put under the microscope, this time the engine room gets a thorough examination. The boys take a look at the areas of strength, and the areas that have us worried when it comes to impact and depth up front. And don't miss a condensed version of Yioti's Quiz! Thank you for your support through the years and for helping us get to 300 editions! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're nearly there! Both Wests Tigers Podcast episode 300 and the kick-off to the Wests Tigers season are imminent. But, on the edge of these two milestones, we have a lot to discuss on this edition of the pod, including...and this seems a bit of a shock and certainly a first on this pod, Greg Inglis! Out of the blue, Inglis is seen at Wests Tigers headquarters in Wests Tigers colours. We now know that the former South Sydney star has taken up a mentoring and support role with our young fullback, Jahream Bula. Eddie Otto, Steve Stretton, and Garry Watson discuss the influence that Inglis might have on Bula and the club in general. The boys also take a look at the recent interview Benji Marshall did with journalist Brent Read.  There were some interesting comments in there by the head coach, including the prospect of rookie Lachlan Galvin being a genuine chance of selection. This was followed up by another article by The Mole that said Galvin, who was dubbed "the next Nathan Cleary" in the article, was looking likely to take the number 6 Wests Tigers jersey in Round Two. There was speculation in that story that Jayden (Bud) Sullivan and Latu Fainu were in doubt due to injuries. Garry has an update on all of that. New recruit Justin Olam also comes up on the agenda with concerns the former Storm centre might have some injury issues himself. And then the boys put the Wests Tigers 2024 backs and halves under the microscope to see how we're shaping up and what our all-important depth looks like. Don't forget to join us on the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum to discuss everything Wests Tigers and stay tuned for details on how you can join us on a road trip to watch the Wests Tigers in action in Bathurst! The biggest off-season in Wests Tigers history has continued with the departure of the club's longest-serving player. David Nofoaluma played 192 games for the club over a decade, but earlier this week he accepted a sizeable payout to walk away from the final two years of his contract. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast we take a look at the Wests Tigers career of the man called 'Nofa' and discuss why things went south for him. The move has also opened up a couple of interesting situations that we also discuss. Firstly, who are now most likely our two starting wingers in 2024? Will it be Staines and Tupou? Or, are there other options Benji Marshall is considering? Secondly, what do we do with the vacant roster spot? Is it best to hold on to the spot and see where we might need strengthening mid-season? Or, do we go to market now? Another topic for discussion is just the enormous amount of change that has occurred in recent months with a long list of departures including Pascoe, Hagipantelis, Fulton, Sheens, Brooks, and now Nofoaluma. With the first trial match just a few weeks away, we hope you enjoy this edition of the pod. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to the Wests Tigers Justin Olam! The signing of the PNG International centre takes centre stage on this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast. Joel Helmes is joined by Eddie Otto and Declan McCutcheon for a look at what Olam might bring to the team in 2024 and beyond. His signing came at the expense of Shawn Blore, a guy with plenty of talent but a chequered run at the club with injuries. So, who got the better deal? Will we regret letting Blore go? who might replace Blore in the forwards? And how will Olam go with our other left-edge players such as Isaiah Papali’i and Latu Fainu? We try to answer those questions on the pod. Also, who might feature in the centres alongside Olam when the Tigers take the field in Round 2 of the 2024 NRL season? We take a look at some of the recent comments on the Blore and Olam swap on the Wests Tigers Podcast Forum. And Eddie breaks out some tough questions on the latest round of Buy, Sell or Hold. The trials are coming soon! In the meantime, please enjoy this latest edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast with Declan, Eddie and Joel. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Santa Claus is coming to town and Wests Tigers fans are hoping the big man has a very special present for us all this year! We've all been good little boys and girls, we've been (mostly) patient while the Wests Tigers have been on struggle street in recent years. But are good things about to come our way? On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto has come out of seclusion to join Declan McCutcheon, Garry Watson, and Steve Stretton. On the agenda is the potentially impending signing of Panthers superstar half, Jarome Luai. The boys look at where that contract situation is at the moment, and when we might be able to officially call him a Tiger! If he does come, who will he partner in the Wests Tigers halves in 2025? There's also a look back at the big series of events that took place last week, including the performance of new interim CEO, Shane Richardson. And an update on the big surge in Wests Tigers memberships since the changes were confirmed. We hope you enjoy this bumper edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, and, if we don't catch you again this year, we all wish you a safe and merry Christmas. Who said people-power was dead? The Wests Tigers owners have acted on the recommendations of the intensive review into the Wests Tigers. And those actions are comprehensive. We asked for that review, us on the pod, but also the rest of you guys who supported our petition and that means we did it together! The changes announced today include the removal of the Wests Tigers board, including Chairman, Lee Hagipantelis. CEO Justin Pascoe has also decided to hand in his resignation. In their place are interim CEO Shane Richardson, and interim Chair, Barry O'Farrell (who has held the position before). On this very special edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes is joined by Steve Stretton, Declan McCutcheon, Kelly Hollis, and Garry Watson to put these major changes under the spotlight. Some of the questions we try to answer include: What legacy are Lee and Justin leaving? Are we surprised the Holman Barnes Group backed the review findings so strongly? What should be the main priorities of the new leaders coming in? What are some good skills we should be looking for among our new board members? It's been a big day, an historic one for our club and we hope you enjoy our analysis of everything that has taken place. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eddie’s back! After a self-imposed break away from the pod, and the Wests Tigers in general, Mr Otto is back in the host’s chair. On this off-season edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie, along with Declan McCutcheon and Garry Watson, cover everything that’s been happening around our great club. That includes more talk around the review into the Wests Tigers. The guys ask whether the delay in releasing the key review findings, or there appearing to be no major moves occurring at the moment, is a good or bad thing? Should we be starting to grow concerned that significant reforms to the club’s administration and governance are/were a bridge too far? Eddie, Garry and Declan have their say on all that. Also, should the owners of the club be concerned about our major sponsor leaving if the review leads to the removal of Chairman Lee Hagipantelis? The other big off-season talking point is the attempt to steal Jerome Luai off of the high-flying Panthers. There’s a discussion around how that may pan out over the coming days. The boys give their thoughts on what Luai would bring for the Tigers, where he might play, and whether Penrith or the Bulldogs are a greater threat to get his signature. Addin Fonua Blake’s future also comes up for discussion, including whether we should look at trading one of our current players for the big Warriors prop. Adam Doueihi has been in the news over an off-field social media issue, but on the field there are hopes he will play a part in the 2024 Wests Tigers team. The guys give their thoughts on how he might be used. We hope you enjoy the latest edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
