Episode 437: Movie News Live!, Dune: Part Two (NO Spoilers!), Drive-Away Dolls, Tyler Perry's Mea Culpa
2024/02/24
We're feeling especially spicy with an extra-long Friday episode of Breakfast All Day. Alonso and Christy have an early, spoiler-free review of "Dune: Part Two," which has IMAX sneaks on Sunday night before opening everywhere March 1. It's an astonishing achievement -- even more so than Denis Villeneuve's 2021 "Dune: Part One" -- and you must experience it on the biggest screen you can find with the best possible sound. We also review the messy comedy "Drive-Away Dolls," which finds Ethan Coen directing for the first time without brother Joel. Of course, we couldn't miss "Tyler Perry's Mea Culpa," since we're completists of the auteur. Perry's homage to steamy erotic thrillers of the '90s is streaming on Netflix. As always on Fridays, we begin with Movie News Live!, which includes a look ahead to the weekend's Spirit Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. And for our Patreon subscribers, a recap of this week's "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans," which follows Truman on a magical day in Manhattan with the formidable James Baldwin. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us!   * We've loved every flavor we've tried from our friends at Coffee Bros., and we're loving passing our discount along to you! Episode 436: Drift, Hundreds of Beavers reviews
2024/02/20
It's Arthouse Tuesday here at Breakfast All Day! We have a quick mid-week visit with reviews of two extremely different indies (although they are both about hunger and survival, kinda). First we discuss "Drift," from "The Breaking Ice" director Anthony Chen. It stars Cynthia Erivo and Alia Shawkat as two women who strike up an unlikely friendship on a picturesque Greek island. Then we review the truly insane "Hundreds of Beavers," a black-and-white, silent slapstick comedy that's unlike anything we've seen before. We disagree as to whether it works completely, but we both think it's worth seeing.   "Hundreds of Beavers" is playing in a roadshow format, so click here to learn more about dates and cities: https://hundredsofbeavers.com/#watch   Be sure to check our YouTube channel Wednesday morning, when we'll have a spoiler-free review of "Dune: Part Two." Until then, thanks for sharing some of your time with us!

Episode 435: Movie News Live!, This Is Me ... Now: A Love Story, Bob Marley: One Love
2024/02/17
We have a special musical episode of Breakfast All Day for you as we review two very different movies about two very different pop culture icons. First, "This Is Me ... Now: A Love Story," Jennifer Lopez's trippy cinematic odyssey to accompany her new album. It's streaming on Prime Video. Plus we discuss "Bob Marley: One Love," a frustratingly superficial music biopic about the reggae legend. It's in theaters. We begin once again with Movie News Live!, which we're really enjoying. Be sure to join us every Friday at Noon PST at our YouTube channel. And for our Patreon subscribers, a recap of this week's emotional episode of "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans." Enjoy your three-day weekend and thanks for sharing some of your time with us.

Episode 434: Madame Web (NO Spoilers!), Crossroads (2002) reviews
2024/02/14
Dakota Johnson wants neither the great power nor the great responsibility that come with being a superhero in the Spider-Man world, but she's stuck with them in "Madame Web." This movie is getting savaged critically -- as of this posting, it's at 16% on Rotten Tomatoes -- but we didn't think it was completely terrible, and that's mainly thanks to Johnson's amusingly blasĂŠ performance. Speaking of movies that got awful reviews, we revisit Britney Spears' "Crossroads" from 2002, because it will be streaming for the first time ever starting Thursday on Netflix. The coming-of-age road trip drama was supposed to catapult the pop star to movie stardom; instead, it's a bittersweet time capsule of a more innocent time in Spears' life. And for our Patreon subscribers, we recap the extremely eventful penultimate episode of "True Detective: Night Country" on HBO. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us here at Breakfast All Day!

Episode 433: Movie News Live!, Lisa Frankenstein review
2024/02/10
Super Bowl weekend means slim pickings at the movie theater, so we've got a review for you of "Lisa Frankenstein," a stitched-together horror movie/dark comedy/rom-com from writer Diablo Cody that never quite works. Individual pieces had promise, though, including Kathryn Newton's performance and a great soundtrack of '80s goth tunes. We're also continuing to do our news segment live over at our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel, with today's topics including "Coyote vs. Acme," Gina Carano's lawsuit and the new best casting category at the Oscars. And for our Patreon subscribers, we have recaps of the "Echo" finale on Disney+ (which we're very divided on) and this week's episode of "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans," which we both loved. Thanks so much as always for being here!

Episode 432: Perfect Days, Nimona reviews
2024/02/07
A quick, midweek pop-in here at Breakfast All Day to catch up on a couple of Academy Award contenders. First, we review "Perfect Days," a gentle gem of a film that's been nominated in the international feature category. Think of it as a Japanese "Jeanne Dielman." Then we finally -- finally! -- discuss "Nimona," a nominee for best animated feature that's been on Netflix since last summer. So many folks have asked us to review this, and we're so glad we did. And for our Patreon subscribers, a recap of this week's supernatural Christmas episode of "True Detective: Night Country." Thanks as always for sharing some of your time with us.

Episode 431: Movie News Live!, Argylle, The Greatest Night in Pop
2024/02/03
We loved doing movie news live so much last week that we're doing it again that way today, and probably from now on. We'll always keep you posted in hopes that you can join us! Chatting with our viewers is one of the highlights of the latest Breakfast All Day episode. We discuss the late Carl Weathers and Chita Rivera, all those crazy Taylor Swift conspiracy theories and more. The star-studded but bland action spectacle "Argylle" is one of the low points, though -- but only Alonso reviews it, because there was a power outage at Christy's theater after the first 20 minutes. Lucky her! On Netflix, though, there's the hugely entertaining documentary "The Greatest Night in Pop," which chronicles the recording of the 1985 charity single "We Are the World." This is extremely our jam, so we knew we had to review it. And for our Patreon subscribers, we recap the first two episodes of Ryan Murphy's "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans" on Hulu, as well as episode 4 of "Echo" on Disney+. Thanks as always for being with us!   * Coffee Bros. has a flavor for your every mood, and they're now offering their first single-origin coffees from Colombia. Episode 430: Society of the Snow, The Breaking Ice
2024/01/31
Bundle up for the latest episode of Breakfast All Day: Christy and Alonso catch up with a couple of international films that take place in chilly settings. We begin with "Society of the Snow," a two-time Oscar nominee about the 1972 Uruguayan rugby team's plane crash in the Andes. It's in theaters and on Netflix. We also review "The Breaking Ice," a dreamy, French New Wave-tinged love triangle set along the border between China and North Korea. It's in theaters. Both films are very good, so check them out! And keeping with the theme over at our Patreon, we recap this week's tantalizing and disturbing episode of "True Detective: Night Country" on HBO, where we're up to day 5 of night in the farthest reaches of Alaska. Thanks for staying warm with us! Coffee Bros. has a flavor for your every mood, and they're now offering their first single-origin coffees from Colombia. Episode 429: Movie News Live!, Miller's Girl, The Sweet East
2024/01/27
It's an exciting time to be with us here at Breakfast All Day because we did a little experiment: A livestream version of our news segment, and it went really well! We had so much fun chatting with our folks on Oscar nomination day that we're going to look for opportunities to go live more often, and we'd love to see you if you can make it. We also have reviews of two movies about precocious, flirtatious high school students: "Miller's Girl," starring Jenna Ortega, and "The Sweet East," starring Talia Ryder. And for our Patreon subscribers, we recap the extremely gnarly episode 3 of "Echo" on Disney+. Thanks as always for joining us.   * Coffee Bros. has a flavor for your every mood, and they're now offering their first single-origin coffees from Colombia. Episode 428: 2024 Oscar Nominations LIVE Chat!
2024/01/24
It's Hollywood's biggest morning! We had a great time discussing this year's Oscar nominations with our viewers on our annual YouTube livestream. In case you missed it, here's our hour-long awards discussion in podcast form. "Oppenheimer" got the most nominations with 13, followed by "Poor Things" with 11, "Killers of the Flower Moon" with 10 and "Barbie" with eight. (And we were just as shocked as you were that Greta Gerwig was left out of best director and Margot Robbie didn't get a best actress nomination; to borrow from another Gerwig movie, it's the titular role.) What are you most excited about? Who got robbed in your opinion? Let us know, and keep an eye out for our Oscar predictions livestream closer to the March 10 ceremony.

Episode 427: Fallen Leaves, Monster (2023), The Teachers' Lounge Spoiler Talk
2024/01/20
It's Arthouse Friday here at Breakfast All Day, as we continue catching up with acclaimed and Oscar-shortlisted international films. First, we review "Fallen Leaves," the amusingly understated romance from Finnish auteur Aki Kaurismäki. Next, we discuss "Monster," a heartbreaking, "Rashomon"-style drama from Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda. Then we wrap up with a spoiler conversation about the German film "The Teachers' Lounge," which we reviewed earlier this week, because so many of you asked for it. And for our Patreon subscribers, we recap the excellent season 5 finale of "Fargo" on Hulu as well as episode 2 of Marvel's "Echo" on Disney+.
