Stormwatch: Change or Die - with Austin Funk
2026/09/25
What happens when Superman decides saving the world isn't enough and tries to fix it instead? Case and Jmike are joined by Austin Funk to revisit Stormwatch: Change or Die, Warren Ellis's three-part story about the High, a blatant Superman analogue with a plan to eliminate scarcity, tear down old systems, and build a better world. They dig into the story's big ideas, its messy execution, and the tragedy of watching genuinely heroic people wind up on opposite sides of a fight over who gets to decide what "better" looks like. A Note to Our Listeners
2026/05/13
A brief personal update from Case about the current state of Men of Steel: First and foremost, the show is on a short hiatus following the passing of my cohost Jmike Folson's father. Jmike and his family are in our thoughts, and we appreciate everyone's patience and understanding while he takes the time he needs. I also wanted to finally address something we hadn't formally announced: beginning in 2026, Men of Steel shifted from a biweekly release schedule to a monthly one following the birth of my son, Robbie. Balancing family, work, and production has meant adjusting the pace of the show a bit, but we're still very committed to the podcast and excited for what's ahead. The plan is to revert to a biweekly schedule in 2027, but for the moment we need the breathing room that a monthly schedule affords. Thank you all so much for listening and supporting the show over the years! We'll be back soon.
Legends of Dead Earth: Superman: The Man of Steel with Jay McKiernan
2026/03/06
This week on Men of Steel, Case and Jmike are joined by Jay McKiernan to explore the Legends of Dead Earth annual for Superman: The Man of Steel from 1996. Written by Kurt Busiek, this issue delivers a sweeping space opera full of big ideas, bold heroism, and some seriously strong artwork to match. Spoiler alert: we all love this one. Support us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/CertainPOVMedia Men of Steel Full Episode Originally aired: March 6, 2026 Edited by Sophia Ricciardi Scored by Gen Moonen Certain Point Of View is a podcast network brining you all sorts of nerdy goodness! Caleb is introduced as a fisherman whose community is attacked by the Empire, triggering his journey with freedom fighters and discovery of his potential powers from absorbing stellar radiation. The story takes place substantially further in the future than the Legion of Superheroes, with hints suggesting several thousand years ahead, involving a cyclical rebirth of Superman-like figures. The setting and plot borrow heavily from classic sci-fi tropes, especially Star Wars, with Empire-like antagonists and clone troopers, making it easy for readers to engage with familiar themes while exploring a fresh character. Character and Costume Design Caleb's design and costume stand out as a major positive, combining classic Superman elements with a unique space barbarian aesthetic (09:52). The costume features a red belt breaking up the silhouette, inspired by Chris Prowse's Legion era designs, which help avoid the "columnar" look typical of Superman's outfit. The only notable design critique was the oversized bracers and a 90s-style hairdo, which some felt clashed with the otherwise sharp look. Caleb's character design matches his personality and setting, with long hair and a rugged vibe fitting the spacefaring, water-world environment, enhancing his appeal as a heroic figure. Plot Developments and Key Conflicts The narrative efficiently covers Caleb's rise and battles against the Empire, culminating in his confrontation with Lex Luthor the 60th (35:00). Caleb's powers develop over time, including space-time warping and remote sensing abilities, which provide a fresh take on traditional Superman powers adapted for a sci-fi setting. The Empire's force, led by a long-lived Lex Luthor using cloned armies and Kryptonian technology, creates a formidable adversary, deepening the story's stakes and enhancing the space opera feel. The story ends on an open note, with Caleb and his love interest Lang expecting a child on a remote planet named Solitude, leaving the final battle unresolved and inviting reader imagination. Creative Team and Storytelling Quality The story benefits from the involvement of veteran creators Kurt Busiek, Paul Ryan, and Joe Rubenstein, resulting in a well-crafted and engaging narrative (13:32). Busiek's experience shines through with a concise yet dense script that balances action, character development, and world-building without unnecessary filler. The art consistently supports the story's energy, with Paul Ryan's layouts and finishes providing clear, dynamic visuals that highlight the vast space battles and intimate character moments. The use of water metaphors and first-person narration by Caleb adds depth and a unique voice, enhancing the immersive quality of the story. Strategic and Thematic Insights The annual explores themes of legacy, cyclical rebirth, and moral responsibility in a far-future setting, positioning Caleb as both a fighter and a moral center (45:16). Caleb's ethical decision to protect a newly discovered Krypton-like world instead of exploiting it for military gain underscores his role as a leader with a strong moral compass. The story embraces the idea of multiple Superman-origin planets, enriching the DC Universe's multiverse concept and allowing fresh storytelling avenues. The Empire's conquest and use of cloned soldiers and stolen technology reflect classic villain archetypes, reinforcing the narrative's deliberate homage to space opera traditions while keeping the tone accessible. Audience Reception and Legacy Potential Hosts expressed high regard for this annual, considering it one of the best in the Legends of Dead Earth line due to its clear storytelling, strong art, and compelling character (49:10). The story's straightforward approach and well-paced plot make it highly recommended and enjoyable even for readers less familiar with extended Superman lore. Despite its quality, Caleb's story appears to be a one-off with no known follow-ups, though the hosts expressed hope that the character and concept could be expanded in future multiverse or alternate universe tales. The annual's blend of familiar sci-fi elements with a fresh Superman iteration creates potential for inspiring new stories that merge classic superhero themes with space opera drama.

Mike explains the story: a future alien (Willig) discovers a Jor-El hologram crystal that downloads Superman's legacy into his mind.   Willig mistakes himself for Superman and tries to live up to that heroism amid a slave-like alien society oppressed by space pirates called the Sarkons.   Introduction of Characters and Setting Details (08:00 - 13:00)   The Sarkons are space pirates enslaving the Kirati race.   Willig adopts a homemade Superman costume inspired by the crystal's data.   ️ Willig's Character Development and Conflict (13:00 - 18:00)   Willig's blue-collar background and family life portrayed humorously but insightfully.   His assumption of the Superman mantle is both a personal awakening and rebellion against the slave narrative imposed by the Sarkons.   Climax and Resolution Summary (18:00 - 23:00)   Willig confronts his oppressors and is ultimately killed, delivering a heroic speech before dying.   The story is capped with a statue commemorating Willig as a hero, echoing Superman's mythos.   Critical Analysis and Reflection (23:00 - 27:00)   Discussion about the story's condensed nature—could have been a longer arc.   The story is a science fiction parable about oppression, mythology, and heroism.   Social and Mythological Themes (27:00 - 33:00)   The story deals with themes of historical revisionism, systemic oppression, and the reclaiming of heroism by the oppressed.   Reflections on how Superman stories absorb and reflect cultural values and how myth evolves through retelling.   ️ Dated Elements and Audience (33:00 - 44:00)   One-dimensional villainy discussed; space pirates having a 'district manager' seen as anachronistic or odd.   Possible target audience as younger readers.   Legends of Dead Earth's Format and Distribution (44:00 - 50:30)   The story's place in DC's publication history noted.   Availability issues raised: this issue not currently on the DC Universe app, unlike other annuals.   Closing and Guest Information (50:30 - 55:42)   Frank Hernandez shares updates on his production company, Elysian Sky Productions, work with AI music, and upcoming Farragut projects.   Hosts share social media and Patreon information.

We dig into how this story redefined the dynamic between Superman and Batman, the tone of early '90s DC, and why this team-up still holds up decades later. #MenOfSteelPod #WorldsFinest #Superman #Batman #DCComics #ComicsPodcast #KrisIngersoll Support us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/CertainPOVMedia Men of Steel Full Episode Originally aired: December 5, 2025 Edited by Sophia Ricciardi Scored by Geoff Moonen Certain Point Of View is a podcast network brining you all sorts of nerdy goodness! Topic: The 1990 DC Comics miniseries World's Finest by Dave Gibbons and Steve Rood. Contextual Background of the 1990 World's Finest (02:51 - 05:34) The miniseries releases shortly after Crisis on Infinite Earths and John Byrne's Man of Steel reboot (1986). Post-Dark Knight Returns, Batman and Superman's relationship had changed, characterized by distance rather than camaraderie. ️ Plot Overview (05:34 - 08:14) Lex Luthor and Joker team up to take over Gotham and Metropolis with intertwined but largely separate schemes. Batman and Superman investigate, culminating in events involving an orphanage, a nuclear reactor, and city-wide explosions. Decompression and Story Structure Critique (08:14 - 11:34) Discussion of story pacing issues: The narrative is elongated with side elements (e.g., orphan kids) that do not cohesively tie in. Emphasis on character moments over tight plotting. Initial Impressions and Artistic Elements (11:34 - 17:59) Chris praises the visual storytelling and art, referencing the use of parallel imagery and distinctive flashback watercolor style. Noted the deliberate design choices to echo Silver Age and Max Fleischer era Superman and early Batman. ‍️ Characterization of Villains and Supporting Cast (17:59 - 30:39) Joker portrayed in a "zany," less menacing mode, more a prankster than murderously malicious. Lex Luthor features a robotic hand and operates like a mob boss, balancing businessman and villain traits. Character Dynamics and Relationships (30:39 - 40:21) Lois Lane and Bruce Wayne's interactions highlight mutual suspicion and gradual respect. Batman and Superman's knowledge of each other's secret identities is subtle initially, revealed more overtly in third issue. ️ Themes and Continuity Notes (40:21 - 50:27) Orphanage is a thematic midpoint between Gotham and Metropolis, symbolizing shared orphan backgrounds of Batman, Superman, and villain. The book emphasizes orphans and legacy but does not fully develop these thematic elements. Technical and Artistic Praise (50:27 - 52:58) Art and character design praised for classic yet fresh look; great use of tableau pages showing Gotham and Metropolis. Noted the Batmobile's stylish design and Batman's athletic, sleek physique. Character in Action: Batman and Superman (52:58 - 59:55) Batman characterized as efficient, brutal, and action-focused. His use of Batarangs and disguises recognized as authentic. Superman rendered as powerful but more grounded Burn era 'cop,' balancing investigative journalism and heroic strength. Artistic and Thematic Highlights (59:55 - 01:09:46) Memorable moments include Superman carrying a nuclear reactor into space to save Metropolis. Subtle details such as Clark Kent's mannerisms and investigative approach noted. Overall Assessment and Legacy (01:09:46 - 01:14:36) The miniseries serves as a valuable snapshot of Batman and Superman dynamics post-Crisis and pre-mid-90s crossovers. While the narrative is considered "vibes-over-story," the series offers essential character moments, iconic imagery, and era-specific continuity. Conclusion and Promotions (01:14:36 - 01:19:44) Guests share social media handles and podcast info. Hosts plug "Trade School" podcast and Certain POV Discord for further comic discussions.
