One of the first things Jesus did in his public ministry was invite people to become his disciples. In the first chapter of John's gospel, he used the phrase "come and see" as part of that invitation. To "see" means to observe and listen within a specific real-world context and this fall we will specifically be looking at the character of the land in the Bible. In the story of Lot and Abram, we see the easier life being compared with the harder, yet God's promise remains with Abram. But it is strange that in the choice, Abraham had a say in the land chosen. And yet, he essentially "passed" the choice to Lot. Why? The text makes it clear that visually the choice seemed pretty obvious, which is why Lot chose the Land he did. So was there something else going on? As we will hear, Pastor Karla reveals how faithfulness is formed in uncomfortable places.  Passage: Genesis 13 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience: 9:00 a.m. - Sanctuary Service 9:30 a.m. - Online Service 10:30 a.m. - Chapel Service  Please consider joining us for one of these services.  To view past worship services along with other digital content, go to our Youtube Channel @PointLomaChurchOnline.  To get involved in what God is doing within our community, please visit our website at www.pointlomachurch.org. To "see" means to observe and listen within a specific real-world context and this fall we will specifically be looking at the character of the land in the Bible. As we continue to study the land as "character" in the Bible, we examine how immediately following the call of Abram, two verses later, there was a famine in the land. Why? What did this mean? Why was the land constantly having famines along with other issues. The week, Pastor Karla talks about how famine reveals the limits of the land to invite dependence on God. Staying long enough in hard seasons to learn is a difficult task.  Passage: Genesis 12:10-20 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience: 9:00 a.m. In the first sermon of our Fall Series, Pastor Karla opens a familiar passage, but points out an odd piece of the story that probably none of us have stopped to examine deeper...The tree of Moreh at Shechem. It is through this often overlooked part of the passage that reveals how God calls Abram to a specific land. So what does the location of this land tell us about God's desire for His people?   Passage: Genesis 12:1–7; John 1:39 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience: 9:00 a.m. This summer, we explore themes from popular films alongside Scripture, uncovering how God's truth speaks through the stories we love. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. This week is our last week in the Cinema Sundays Series. Our Director of Men & Youth Ministries, Ryan Silvia, closes out the summer with the epic journey of a young moisture farmer turned Jedi named Luke Skywalker. In the movie Star Wars: A New Hope, Ryan discusses how in a universe of shadows, Christ is always the light that dispels the darkness. And as his followers, we are to identify the beauty and hope of Christ in everything we see and do.  Passage: Revelation 21:18-26 NOTE: To see the clip played during the service, click HERE. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. What is your dream? What is your desire in life? This morning, we examine our dreams through the lens of Scripture interacting with the fantastical movie La La Land. We look at the dream of Solomon, and how God gives him "whatever he asks." Sounds simple enough. Is there a catch?...Pastor Karla shares how God loves our dreams! God has given us our dreams-- especially that ones that align with God's Kingdom. This summer, we explore themes from popular films alongside Scripture, uncovering how God's truth speaks through the stories we love. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. In our movie this week, A Beauitufl Mind, we see the thin space between reality and delusion. When we look at Scripture there are many of these "thin places" between our phyiscal reality and divine reality. In our Bible passage this week, Pastor Karla examines how the gospel restores how we see our reality, and God's truth replaces our illusions. This summer, we explore themes from popular films alongside Scripture, uncovering how God's truth speaks through the stories we love. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. This week, we look at a movie that became popular, first, on the theatrical stage - Les Miserables. Les Miz (as it is commonly refered) is first and foremast a parable. A story that is not true or historical, but invites the listener or watcher into it in such a way that the audience wishes it were true because it is relatable. It also leads the audience to take a step of action. Jesus does the same with his parables that he tells. Pastor Karla conveys to us how God reaches us at your worst so He can lift us into our best. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. Everyone remembers the iconic scene from the movie Rocky in which Rocky Balboa bounds up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and looks over the city and raises his voice in victory - a victory he has yet to experience in reality, but one he is now prepared to encounter. This week, Rev. Jerry Andrews, Pastor Emeritus at First Presbyterian Church of San Diego compares and contrasts the difference between trying versus training, and examines how Paul distinguishes between the two when it comes to our lives of faith.  Passage: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience: 9:00 a.m. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. The Wizard of Oz is a beloved classic that seems to be in the childhood memory in all of us. It utters one of the most famous and enduring lines in cinema history, and that is the line, "There's no place like home." Dorothy repeats this line over and over and comes to apprerciate her place and time in life. For us as Christians, we understand the sentiment of this line in our spiritual lives. We have a deep desire to experience home. We also know that our ultimate home isn't a place, it's a Person. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. It is the movie that brought people back to the theaters after the Pandemic: Top Gun Maverick is the movie we discuss this week. Pastor Karla implores us that our battle is not against each other, but against evil itself. Paul calls us to put on the full armor of God, but in Christ, we already have the armor on. It's just a matter of us realizing it, and understanding its usefulness for our lives. True victory involves more than just our skill, it involves obedience to God's call and the right equipment.  Passage: Ephesians 6:10-18 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience: 9:00 a.m. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. This week, we examine the story of Forrest Gump. As the history of the United States from the 1950s to the '70s unfolds from the perspective of an Alabama man with an IQ of 75, who yearns to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart. Pastor Karla discusses how life may not always go as planned, but if we submit to God's will we can trust God will use our lives for good. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. This week, Parish Associate, Rev. Dr. Chris Lenocker delves into the classic movie, The Shawshank Redemption. Pastor Chris examines the journey of banker Andy Dufresne who is wrongfully convicted of mudering his wife and sentenced to life in a harsh prison. Over the next two decades, he befriends fellow inmate Red, survives rampant corruption, and covertly digs a tunnel to freedom. In following Andy Dufresne's journey, we discover what true freedon is for us as followers of Christ, and that no matter how strong the chains that bind, the gospel offers freedom from within.  Passage: Romans 6:15-23 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience: 9:00 a.m. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. This week, Worship Leader and Digital Content Producer, R.O. Smith shares with us about the popular, fantastical animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters. What was it about this story that resonated with so many people? R.O. looks at the commentary this movie played regarding the most basic question we are in search of in life: Who am I? (Identity). We ask the question this week, "From where do we start?" Because of Jesus Christ, and his obedience and sacrifice on the cross, we can have the confidence to start from the good! All we have to do is trust Him and that what he says about us is true. From adventure and sacrifice to redemption and hope, each week reminds us that God is present in every part of our story—inviting us into something greater. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring begins the epic journey of Frodo, a young, small, seemingly insignificant hobbit, as he sets out to help save his world from the further spread of evil. Epic narratives like The Lord of the Rings resonate so deeply with us because their heroes are often ordinary people—unlikely figures who remind us of ourselves. Pastor Karla connects the story to our lives by pointing out how it is hard feeling small in such a big world. God is with us in the adventure so we don't have to carry the whole quest alone.  Passage: Genesis 12:1-4 Full Lord of the Rings Clip 1 Full Lord of the Rings Clip 2 We have three worship opportunities for you to experience: 9:00 a.m. We are jumping into a new series on Jonah. The book of Jonah isn't primarily about a fish--it's the story of a faithful God pursuing a wayward heart. Through Jonah, we will learn together about God's relentless mercy for everyone. Sometimes God sends storms not to punish us, but to rescue us. God's mission is to redeem, not to destroy. The story ends with a question because the story continues with us.
