On March 7, 1955, actor Mary Martin stepped on stage in front of tens of millions of people. Well … kind of. Martin was starring as Peter Pan in a musical production televised on NBC. It was the most-watched broadcast of the television season—bringing in a bigger audience than even Davy Crockett. But Peter Pan wasn’t just notable for its viewership. It was also groundbreaking in how it portrayed gender and sexuality.
