McKenzie Wark – On Being Plastic
2026/05/15
On the opening day of the 2026 Free School —which this year focuses on clay, softness and desire—, Australian-born writer and theorist McKenzie Wark presented her commissioned text On Being Plastic (featured in the festival brochure). Following the presentation, Wark engaged in a conversation with philosopher and performer Luce deLire. Wark is a professor of Media and Culture at The New School in New York City. She has published numerous groundbreaking theoretical works, including A Hacker Manifesto (Harvard), Gamer Theory (Harvard), and Capital Is Dead (Verso). Her works of autofiction—which include Reverse Cowgirl (Semiotexte), Raving (Duke) and Love and Money, Sex and Death (Verso)—use sexual aesthetics, dissociation, and her own experience as a trans woman as starting points for theorising new models of contemporary living. In Wark’s writing, intellectualism is not an abstract pursuit, but a form of everyday life.

Selvagem & Lia Rodrigues – Fireflies Conversations (FR, PT)
2025/06/03

Elizabeth Povinelli & Federico Campagna – Fireflies Conversations (EN)
2025/06/03
EN - In this lecture performance, conceived for the Free School, Elizabeth Povinelli focuses on the progressive disappearance of stars due to light pollution, and the loss of a magical relationship with the celestial vault. She engages in conversation with Federico Campagna, whose books Prophetic Culture and Technic and Magic offer a radical rethinking of reality in the face of modern decline. Together, they shed new light on how we perceive and experience the cosmos in an era of disappearance.

2025/05/30
EN - One of the outstanding figures in gender and queer theory studies, Jack Halberstam, published several books among which Trans* A Quick and Quirky Account of Gender Variability, and The Queer Art of Failure. He will be in dialogue with Archivo de la Memoria Trans, a collective dedicated to preserving and honouring the stories of trans communities by creating an alternative archive, a powerful counter-narrative against invisibility and stigmatisation. Together, they will question the assumed authority of traditional archives and reflect on how archives also function as mechanisms of power, and the ways in which they can be reclaimed for radical reimagination and resistance to disappearance.

Ònfalo concert-conference – Fireflies Conversations (EN)
2025/05/28
EN - Musicians Enrico Malatesta and Attila Faravelli, together with researcher Juan José López Díez, delve into the way insects communicate with each other by making leaves vibrate. They accompany groups on walks through green spaces in the city and use laser vibrometers to record these barely perceptible sounds. Halfway between a conference and a concert, they present a montage of sound recordings and scientific insights, a surprising form inviting the audience to enter the invisible life surrounding us.

Silvia Federici & Territorio Doméstico – Without us, the world does not move (EN)
2024/06/26
EN – For the 2024 edition of the Free School programme, Kunstenfestivaldesarts invited artists, thinkers and activists to question the space of the kitchen table as a place for sharing food, a place where stories converge, but also a culmination of a history of domestic labour that is often invisible. This podcast, recorded during these talks and workshops, looks at the struggles of migrant domestic workers, the tools and strategies of resistance and joy as a political weapon. In this first episode, Silvia Federici and Territorio Doméstico tell us about the struggle of migrant domestic workers as part of "A life worth living: a workshop on struggle, care and joy", a four-day workshop organised by artist Anna Rispoli.

EN – For the 2024 edition of the Free School programme, Kunstenfestivaldesarts invited artists, thinkers and activists to question the space of the kitchen table as a place for sharing food, a place where stories converge, but also a culmination of a history of domestic labour that is often invisible. This lecture by Sara Ahmed, author of Queer Phenomenology, explores how tables matter – from writing tables to kitchen tables to conference tables. By using the table as a starting point for reflection, she questions the way in which power is experienced and questioned in everyday life and in institutional cultures.

[Archives] In conversation with Lia Rodrigues about 'Encantado' (FR)
2023/10/20
A series of sound clips that take you closer to the creations of Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2022. Listen to Lia Rodrigues talk about her creation, 'Encantado'.
EN - A carpet of variegated fabrics is slowly unrolled on stage, opening up a kaleidoscope of colours. Thus begins 'Encantado', the new and highly anticipated creation by Lia Rodrigues. With Covid-19 impacting particularly heavily on Brazil, the choreographer asked herself how we could “enchant our fears” in order to recreate a collective dynamic and bring individuals closer together. 'Encantado' is a mesmerising choreography for 11 dancers and countless fabrics, in which these forces – similar to the encantados – journey from one body to the other.

[Archives] In conversation with Wanjiru Kamuyu & Peter Born about 'Bronx Gothic' (EN)
2023/10/20
A series of sound clips that take you closer to the creations of Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2022. Listen to Wanjiru Kamuyu and Peter Born talk about the recreation of Okwui Okpokwasili's Bronx Gothic performance.
EN - Okwui Okpokwasili debuted Bronx Gothic in 2014. In it, and alone on stage, she unveiled the hidden narrative of two black girls growing up in the Bronx in the 80s: in the space of a curtained room, the audience is drawn into their shared secrets. Built upon an exchange of notes between the two girls in the midst of a sexual awakening, Bronx Gothic looks to communicate what is essential about a body in transformation and the love, strangeness and terror that accompany it.
NL - Okwui Okpokwasili creëerde Bronx Gothic oorspronkelijk in 2014.

[Archives] In conversation with Castélie Yalombo about 'Water, l'atterrée des eaux vives' (FR)
2023/10/20
A series of sound clips that take you closer to the creations of Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2022. Listen to Castélie Yalombo talk about her new creation 'Water, l'atterrée des eaux vives'.
EN - Everything in Castélie Yalombo’s choreography is unstable. She is alone on stage, but her body seems to be manipulated from the outside. Her movements are disjointed: suddenly, with her eyes closed in front of a basin of water, she shapes her limbs and movements as if her body is guided by conflicting forces. After graduating from ISAC and working as an interpreter for Louise Vanneste, Water, l’atterrée des eaux vives marks Yalombo’s first appearance at the festival. It is an ode to ambiguity from a rising voice in Belgian choreography.

Samah Hijawi and Reem Shilleh took the Ramallah Clubs Network (of the Palestinian diaspora in the USA) as a starting point to reflect on the intricacies and complexities of the Palestinian diaspora and their manifestations. They will explore the experience of being in diaspora and exile and how this formulates one’s relationship to home and homeland. Often, members of the diaspora reconnect through community centres, festivals and events in order to continue their cultural practices, and keep the community connected. But beyond sharing food, dance and conversation, what intangible elements do these gatherings transmit? What are the other forms and tools that are used to understand this convoluted relationship between here and there? In the face of Palestine’s settler colonial reality how have they contributed to direct and indirect forms of resistance, narrative formations and acts of remembering?
In a series of conversations broadcast online on Radio Al Hara every Thursday of the month of October, Hijawi and Shilleh will be speaking with colleagues, artists, filmmakers, social activists, and friends from different geographies, whose work is connected to or influenced by their diasporic/exilic experience and desire to reconnect.
EN - In the final conversation of The Ramallah Club Network, Reem Shilleh and Samah Hijawi speak to Dr. Kathy Zarur, a curator and educator based in San Francisco, who explores concepts around place and landscape both as artistic genre and as lived experience of diasporic communities. By focusing on two exhibitions that Zarur has co-curated, Where is Here and Betweenscapes, they reflect on the nuances between the conditions of being in diaspora and exile, and how these frame the experiences of being away from the homeland. They also talk about what the social fabric of the United States offers in parallel experiences between the indigenous and diasporic communities, whose kaleidoscope identities complexifies their relation to place.
