#158: The System That Fits: Thor Young on Behaviour, Drawdowns, and Life Off the Screen
2026/09/10
In this episode of the AlphaMind podcast, we sit down with Thor Young, who took the long way round into trading, starting out in IT before making the leap. Thor's refreshingly honest about the early days, blowing up more than one account before he finally scrapped his original strategy and built a systematic approach that actually suited who he is, not who he thought he should be. He talks about how meditation and a good community helped him get through the mental side of it, and why the real battle isn't the market, it's sticking to your own system when a drawdown is testing your nerve.
He also opens up about juggling trading with a full-time job and family life, including raising a neurodivergent child. It's a warm, honest part of the conversation, and one we think a lot of people will see themselves in, whether they trade or not.
Thor is the author of A Complete Day Trading System (2021) and has personally mentored hundreds of traders, helping them build greater discipline, consistency, and confidence in their execution. Today he trades live daily while mentoring alongside his partner, Dr. Vanessa Charland, through Market Alchemists, where together they continue developing systematic approaches and tools designed to bring clarity and structure to the trading process.

#157: The Market Doesn't Care About Your Story — What The Body Keeps the Score Teaches Traders About Risk
2026/08/12
What Trading Can Learn From The Body Keeps the Score
with Steven Goldstein and Mark Randall
A trader knows the right move — and physically can’t make it. This episode is about why, and what trauma research reveals about performing under financial risk.
Bessel van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score has become required reading in trading circles — not because trading is trauma, but because the same nervous system mechanics trauma research has mapped in detail also govern how traders behave under pressure. Steven Goldstein and Mark Randall break down five lessons from the book and translate each one directly into the language of risk, drawdowns, and decision-making under threat.
What you’ll learn
• Why the rational, decision-making part of the brain goes offline under perceived threat — and why “just follow the plan” fails in the moment
• How neuroception, the nervous system’s unconscious scanning for danger, shows up as physical sensation before a trade goes wrong
• Why a single catastrophic loss can fragment a trader’s whole sense of self, not just their P&L
• Why journaling and post-mortem analysis alone rarely change behavior — and what bottom-up, body-based work adds
• Why co-regulation with another person, not solo reflection, is often what lets a dysregulated nervous system reset
“The market doesn’t care about your story, but your body is keeping score whether you’re listening to it or not.”

#156: You Can Make a Fortune Trading - Don't Let Anyone Tell You Otherwise - With Matt “Pax” Kenah
2026/03/10
In 2000, a young Japanese trader named Takashi Kotegawa (better known as BNF) began trading small-cap stocks from his bedroom with just $13,500. Eight years later, he had turned that modest stake into a staggering $153 million.
This legendary feat serves as the anchor for a recent viral X post by veteran trader Ryan Scott (aka The Flow Horse). Ryan’s post (linked below) argues a provocative truth: despite the cynics, it remains entirely possible to build a fortune in the markets. But if the opportunity is real, why do so few actually succeed?
In this episode, we welcome back veteran trader Matt "Pax" Kenah to dissect this debate. We explore the deep psychological, mental, and behavioral hurdles all traders face, specifically focusing on the challenges of transitioning to a home-trading environment and the discipline required to become one of the elite few who truly thrive.

#155: Performance Coaching: The Mental Shift That Powers Trading Excellence — with Andrew Menaker
2026/01/27
“When a trader stops trying to fix themself, and starts understanding themself, that's when trading can really transform. “ – Andrew Menaker – The AlphaMind Podcast
In this episode, we explore how performance coaching transforms traders’ mindsets, sharpens decision-making under pressure, and builds routines that sustain a long-term edge.
Hosts Steven Goldstein and Mark Randall sit down with performance coach and professional trader Andrew Menaker to examine the psychological shifts that drive lasting improvement in trading performance.
While many view trading as a technical challenge—charts, systems, strategy—Andrew argues the greatest gains come from transforming the person behind the P&L. Through coaching, traders develop self-mastery, which produces clearer decision-making, healthier risk-taking, and greater resilience—leading to significant improvements in performance.

#149 Blayn Marshall: A Younger Trader’s Journey and Perspective on Developing Systematic Trading Strategies
2025/08/07
Welcome to episode 149 of the AlphaMind Podcast. Unlike most episodes that feature seasoned traders with decades of experience, today we’re delighted to speak with Blayn Marshall, someone who is still in the early chapters of his trading career, navigating the initial challenges and lessons that come with it.
Blayn began his trading journey facing the common hurdles many new private and retail traders encounter—initial losses, steep learning curves, and the pursuit of
consistency. Recognizing the potential of automation and systematic strategies
in today’s landscape, he has shifted his focus toward building multiple
automated trading systems. Using a disciplined, low-risk approach, he is now
starting to see the rewards of his efforts.
What makes this conversation particularly fascinating is gaining insights from
someone who is starting out in a very different environment—one shaped by the
technological advancements and abundant resources of the 2020s. The
opportunities, tools, and access to information available today create new
doors and perspectives that simply weren’t possible even a decade ago, or when
most of us began.
We hope you enjoy this fresh, insightful discussion with Blayn Marshall.

#144 Tracy Gapin, MD: Enhancing Trading Performance Through Physiological Insights
2025/04/24
At the core of exceptional trading is the individual trader—you! While we diligently focus on the transactional elements of trading, such as market analysis and risk management, we often neglect the importance of optimizing ourselves to engage effectively with these aspects.
In this episode, we explore the often-overlooked physiological dimension of trading with Dr. Tracy Gapin, founder and CEO of the Gapin Institute. As a leading expert in men's health and performance, Dr. Gapin specializes in helping senior executives, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and athletes enhance their health and performance.
We delve into the critical relationship between mental and physical health, highlighting how internal processes significantly impact healthy cognitive function. A well-functioning cognitive process boosts trading productivity by facilitating clear market interpretation and fostering objectivity in decision-making. It reduces stress and anxiety, enabling more effective judgments and execution. Furthermore, it increases resilience in the face of setbacks, assists in managing risks and emotions, encourages acceptance of outcomes, and promotes detachment from ego—key components for continuous improvement and adaptability.
Prioritizing your well-being also offers additional benefits: it can lead to a longer, healthier life, creating a true ‘win-win’ scenario.
Join us for an insightful discussion that could transform your trading journey.
