When I stopped needing to be liked as a step-mum
2026/04/19
This one took a while to land.  The part that tried hard not to upset anyone, to do it right, to keep the peace, to earn my place was running rampant! And how exhausting that became. Somewhere along the way, I realised trying to be liked was costing me something far too precious ... myself. This is a conversation about self-abandonment in prettier clothes. About confusing being liked with being loving. About the shift from managing everyone else’s comfort to staying true to what feels right and good and true for you. If you’re a step-parent who has bent yourself to belong, bit your tongue, second-guessed your instincts or wondered why this role can feel so hard, this one is for you. Kat & Steve - If we had 24 hours left ...
2026/04/12
We asked a question ...“If we had 24 hours left on earth, what would we do?” A real, honest question to look at what actually matters when time is no longer on our side. Because questions like this have a way of showing you your life as it is, not the one you say you want, but the one you’re actually living. What would you drop? What would you lean into? Who would you call? How would you spend your time? And maybe the better question is, what’s stopping you from living a little more like that now? "I'm not ready yet!"
2026/04/05
You keep telling yourself you’re not ready. Not clear enough, not confident enough, not quite there yet. But if you’re honest, you already know. You know the conversation you’ve been avoiding. You know the decision you keep circling. You know what’s not working anymore. This episode is about that space. The in-between where you sit and think, and think and think some more whilst thinking you need more time, when really you’re avoiding what the next step is asking of you. It might disrupt things. It might feel uncomfortable. It might require you to show up in a way you haven’t before. So instead, you stay in your head. You go back and forth. You wait for a feeling that isn’t coming. In this episode I talk about the illusion of readiness, why clarity doesn’t come before action, and how we keep ourselves stuck by calling avoidance “not being ready.” If you’ve been circling something in your life, this one will land. Kat & Steve - To re-marry or not to re-marry
2026/03/29
I asked Steve a question - "were you scared to get married again, to be in a relationship again after your divorce?” When something significant ends, especially a marriage, it changes you. It shapes how you see love, commitment, risk, yourself and others. In this episode, Steve shares what it was actually like stepping back into a relationship after divorce. The hesitation. The awareness. The things he didn’t want to repeat. The work he needed to do on himself.  We talk about how he chose to do it differently the second time around. This isn’t a conversation about getting it perfect and 100% right. It’s about being honest about what you carry from the past, and what you consciously choose to do differently moving forward. If you’ve ever wondered if you can love again after something’s ended or how to not bring old patterns into something new, this one will land. I give myself permission to ...
2026/03/22
Permission sounds simple, but most of us are waiting for it. Waiting for someone to say it’s okay to slow down, okay to change your mind, okay to outgrow something that once made sense. But life rarely hands us that permission, and so, we keep going. We keep doing the roles we’ve always played. We keep carrying responsibilities, expectations, identities that once fit even when something inside us is saying that we’ve changed. Transitions have a way of bringing that nudge to the surface. A shift in your work, your relationships, your body, your priorities, your sense of who you are. And in those moments, the mind wants certainty. It wants a clear answer, a plan, a way to get back to solid ground. But real change rarely works like that. In this episode, I explore the idea of permission. Permission to be in a season of change. Permission to not have everything figured out yet. Permission to let go of what no longer fits. Permission to listen to the quieter voice inside you that knows something is shifting. Sometimes the most honest thing you can do in the middle of life rearranging itself is stop fighting it and give yourself permission to be exactly where you are. Kat & Steve - What we are carrying right now (and how we can help the other)
2026/03/15
Steve and I asked each other a simple question this week: “What are you carrying right now that I might be unaware of… and how can I support you?” When you live with someone, love them and talk to them every day there are always things they’re carrying that you don’t see. Or maybe you do, but you're asking the best question to help them express it.  Pressure. Worry. Fatigue. Things they haven’t quite found words for yet. It’s easy in relationships to assume we know what’s going on for the other person, or to get caught up in our own world and forget to ask. This episode is just us talking about that. Just a real conversation about remembering to look at the person you love and ask a real type of question that will give real answers.  IN PERSON EXPERIENCES, Melbourne Sunday Meds - April 26th, 2026 Offline - May 3rd, 2026 One-day retreat in Balnarring - June 12th, 2026 ONLINE WORK The Good Life - sign up here Authentic The Program - sign up here 1:1 COACHING Keen to work together? - Book a 20-minute call now Read my book, Authentic - coming home to your true self - AUS, EUR, USA Write into us - let us know what you want to hear WelleCo - use code KAT15 for 15% off welleco.com.au www.katjohn.com.au Support the show
The three stages of transition
2026/03/04
In this episode, I wrote called Dear Change. Lately I’ve been sitting in that strange space many of us know well. The space between who we were and who we are becoming. The space where something in life has shifted, but the next chapter hasn’t fully revealed itself yet. It can feel foggy there, uncertain, even tiring. Our minds want answers and direction, but sometimes life is asking something else of us. Patience. Drawing on William Bridges’ work on transitions, I speak about the season many people try to rush through. The in between. The neutral zone. The place where things that once felt certain begin to loosen, old rhythms no longer quite fit, and clarity hasn’t yet arrived. This episode is a reminder that not every season of life is for building. Some seasons are for releasing. Some seasons are for waiting. Some seasons are simply for becoming. If you’re in a moment where life feels unclear, slower than usual, or like something inside you is reorganising, snuggle up and listen in. Kat & Steve - Pretending to like pizza
2026/03/01
In this episode, Steve and I revisit a story from my book that says a lot about how many of us enter relationships in the beginning: a little bit false. When we first got together, Steve was a pizza-eating machine. Every time I went to his place, pizza was ordered. I didn’t even want pizza. But I went along with it. I wanted to be easy. Agreeable. Low maintenance. Cool. Inside, I knew what I actually wanted but I didn’t say it. That small moment became a much bigger realisation: if I’m being “cool” about pizza when I don’t want it, where else in my life am I abandoning myself because I fear losing what I have?  We talk about how many of us shape-shift early in relationships out of fear of being difficult, too much, hard work, or ultimately, unlovable. Showing up false isn’t sustainable. Eventually, the real you arrives anyway. Relationships don’t deepen when we perform, they deepen when the real person finally walks into the room. I didn't expect this at 40
2026/02/22
I felt ready for this chapter. I honoured the versions of me who carried me here . I stepped into this decade open, grounded, certain, and then grief quietly arrived. In this deeply personal episode, I share the unexpected emotional landscape of entering a new decade, the tenderness that comes with seeing your parents age, wondering if the children you love are ready for the world, and realising even the companions who’ve walked beside you for years won’t be here forever. I talk about the body changing in ways you can’t outwork or control. The shift in ambition. The question that begins to surface when striving softens: now what? This isn’t an episode about answers or silver linings. It’s an honest reflection on what happens when time stops feeling theoretical and starts feeling real. When love carries an ache. When life feels more precious and more fragile at the same time. If you’ve felt a quiet grief you couldn’t quite name, if you’re moving through transition, ageing, or a change in identity, this conversation will likely meet you right where you are. Kat & Steve - Supporting one another through transitions
2026/02/15
Steve’s turning 50. I just turned turning 40. This isn’t a “new decade, new me” episode. It’s more tender than that.  For me, there’s been grief. Grieving parts of myself from the past. Versions of me that won’t be coming forward into this next chapter, and if I’m really honest, even pre-mourning what’s to come. Sadness has been the emotion I’ve been honouring this week. I've just let it be there. For Steve, it’s different. He’s more aware of time, how he’s spending it, how joyful his life actually feels and how he could inject more joy into whatever time he has left. We’re both asking: What matters now? What needs to be let go? What needs to be chosen more intentionally? This episode is a very honest reflection of where we’re at. No big answers. Just two people in transition, supporting each other, looking at time, identity, joy, and meaning a little more closely. If you’re in a season of change, this will feel familiar. Oh, to Be Sovereign
2026/02/08
In this solo episode, I share a personal reflection on what it means to live as a sovereign woman. Not in defiance, not from ego, but in true, grounded devotion to your own rhythm, your own knowing, your own life. This is for the woman who’s done hustling for worth. Who’s tired of fragmenting herself to be liked, seen, or accepted. Who’s exhausted from being led by urgency and is ready to return to a deeper truth. If you’ve been feeling the pull to come home to yourself, to rest, to trust, to let go of who you think you should be, this episode is for you. You are not late. You are right on time. This is your invitation to take your seat at the centre of your own life. Kat & Steve - Limbo Land
2025/12/21
Stevie B and I talk about limbo land,  that murky space so many people end up in early on in dating. The situationship. Not quite together. Not quite nothing. We talk about how any interaction between two people is a relationship, whether you label it or not. And how often one person is being clear about what they want, while the other is quietly hoping it’ll turn into something more. We get into wishful thinking. Reading into moments. Convincing yourself that chemistry, closeness, or intimacy means commitment even when the words say otherwise. I share honestly about our early days and how easy it is to override what’s being said because you want a different outcome. This episode is about: The cost of staying in the greyWhy clarity matters more than potentialHow self-respect gets eroded in limboAnd why honest communication is the only way outIf you’ve ever found yourself waiting, hoping, or trying to make something become what it isn’t this one will land. I was an imperfect human recently
2025/12/14
In this episode I share a very human, very imperfect moment I had with a traffic control guy outside my house, one of those interactions where two egos meet, both think they’re right, and things go downhill fast. He was frustrated. I was frustrated. And instead of choosing kindness, clarity, or calm, went high and mighty. Righteous. Chest out. Ego leading the charge. And he did the same. Two strangers, both convinced we were justified, making each other’s day crap within 30 seconds. That’s the work of living authentically, catching yourself when you’ve acted out of alignment, owning it, and doing something about it. And as Steve and I went for our walk, I knew exactly what I needed to do: apologise. Not because I was “wrong.” Not because he “deserved it.” But because I know how I want to show up in this world and that moment wasn’t it. This episode is a reminder that authenticity isn’t perfection, it’s repair. It’s self-awareness put into action. It’s choosing who you want to be, even after an ego slip. Have a listen. It’s a good one. Kat & Steve - I think we're old and grumpy
2025/12/07
This episode is exactly what it sounds like. No love. No light.  The other day, Steve and I were driving in the car airing our annoyances, the stuff that grinds our gears and halfway through we looked at each other and thought, why not share this? Because this is what relationships look like too. It’s not always kissing and cuddling and smooching. It’s not always conscious communication and being hyper-aware. Sometimes it’s just getting things off your chest, laughing about it, and moving on. This one’s light, funny and very human. If you’re in a relationship and thought you were doing it wrong because it isn’t all rosy all the time, you’re not, it's just life. Checking in on my word of the year - unwavered
2025/11/30
In this episode, I share my reflections on my word for this year, unwavered, and how it’s moved itself through me this year.  Change happens in our home all the time. With the girls, with living arrangements, with things shifting, coming, going and for years, that stuff used to mess with me big time. I’d get thrown off, attached to the plan we just made that now suddenly changed again, stuck in my rigidness. But this year this was the year I let that shit go. I stopped gripping so tightly to “how it was supposed to go” and softened into what’s here. It has been incredibly freeing. The second part of the episode is about coming back to what you wrote at the start of the year with what you wanted to stop, start, and keep doing and actually checking in with how you went with that intention. Let's check in together legends.  Buy my book, Authentic - coming home to your true self - AUS, EUR, USA Coach with me 1:1 - Book a 20-minute call now The Good Life - sign up now Write into us - let us know what you want to hear WelleCo - use code KAT15 for 15% off welleco.com.au www.katjohn.com.au Support the show
