Katelyn Hutchison - A New Voice in Track and Field Media
2024/02/23
"I promise you, if you are not in it to be a positive person, it's always going to show up" If you're a fan of track and field, chances are you've seen Katelyn Hutchison's interviews. Her positivity has taken over the mixed zones and gets amazing raw interviews out of the world's best track and field athletes. She takes us through her experience at Worlds this past summer, specifically with her press room question to Sha'Carri Richardson. It all started in 2022 when she was accepted in the Magic Boost program. She was competing at D3 Nationals so missed the meet they were supposed to attend and was thrown into the Mixed Zone at USAs. With little experience, she leaned into her track and field passion and delievered amazing interviews. On the track, she was an All-American at Ithaca College and was apart of two trophy winning teams. She transferred to UK to earn a Master's degree and shares how the transition has gone. She is now a contributor for Forbes Magazine as they want a presence in the Olympic year. She hosts a Podcast with Jasmine Todd for CITIUS Mag. She does it all. The D3 Trials Files: Jay Holder - Olympic Trials Media Director
2024/02/13
Did you enjoy reading the bios on the Atlanta and Orlando Olympic Trials? Jay Holder brought that to the Atlanta trials and carried it over to Orlando. You've also probably heard Jay's voice/name before as he's moderated many pro running event's press conferences and will carry that honor at the Paris Olympics. At the trials this year, Jay was the Media Director and responsible for all things media. From getting stories out to the masses of qualifiers to telling Clayton Young's wife she can go hug him post race, Jay was doing it all. That brief description doesn't do his role justice and he give great detail into what happened behind the scenes at the Trials. He is currently the Executive Director of Running USA but prior to joining, he was the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Atlanta Track Club. He outlines what he's currently working on at Running USA and recaps his time at Atlanta Track Club. Jay walks us through his background of his time at Oswego State was the catalyst for how he was able to combine his passion for running into a career in the running industry. For his own training, he's currently preparing to run Rim to Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon with a few friends this Spring. This is a great episode for those wanting to know what happens behind the scenes at a major running event. The D3 Trials Files: Josh Kalapos
2024/01/30
"I don't think previous results really can predict future returns." Josh Kalapos crossed the Berlin Marathon finish line and his watch showed 2:18:01. He had to go find someone for the officials results before he saw it: 2:18:00. Right at the Olympic Trials qualification mark. This makes Josh the last man in. Josh experienced the highs and lows in college. One of his best moments was winning the UAA Indoor 5k. The low was ending his senior track season on a broken tibula. When he moved to Boston to work at Amazon Robotics after graduation, his friends randomly ran a marathon. This sparked Josh's marathon journey. He jumped into a half marathon and ran 66 minutes which gave him the confidence to go after the OTQ. He's been training with the BAA and believes there is more in the tank than his 2:18 shows. Josh has the confidence to take big swings and is excited to see what he can do. The D3 Trials Files: Gabi Rooker
2024/01/23
"I don't really have a tangible time or placing that would make a race good or bad. I am really excited to get out there and to race and push myself in ways I haven't before, but also continue to listen to my body and what's going on within the race." Gabi Rooker is taking the running scene by storm after her 2:24 marathon in Chicago. Last week, she announced she signed a pro deal with Nike. At the age of 36, Rooker enters the trials seeded 9th and she ran first marathon was in 2021. Rooker was a gymnast at UW-La Crosse and didn't begin running until after she graduated. Her first race to show up on her World Athletics page is a 10 miler in 2019. With a low lifetime mileage count, Rooker focuses on her training rather than racing a whole lot. She takes big swings at each race and it pays off with how her progression has been. From 2:56 to 2:24, Gabi has enjoyed this ride and is ready to take on the challenge of the Olympic Trials How to Support D3 Glory Days: Winter Hats Steady State Nutrition D3 Glory Days Venmo. We launched a Patreon! Subscribe and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts Instagram, Twitter and Strava. D3 Glory Days Merch --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/d3glorydays/message

The D3 Trials Files: Kim Horner
2024/01/17
“You have to love it to want to keep going out the door every day and trying something hard and scary, but also exciting” Kim Horner began her marathon career in 2015 when she had a little fomo that she wasn’t running the Twin Cities Marathon with her friends. It’s the community that brought her to the marathon and what continues to be her driving force behind her success. Shoutout @millcityrunning The culture at Luther is something she still thinks about today and has influenced her marathon career. In her debut, she ran 2:56 and in 2022 ran her OTQ of 2:36:43. Patience, perseverance and progression has been the theme of Horner’s career as she never made it to the state meet in high school nor an All-American in college. The D3 Trials Files: Ryan Jara
2024/01/09
"I definitely started getting to the point where I thought maybe I'm just a 2:34 guy. I'm just a high 15 5k guy and I'm okay with it." Ryan Jara left Hope College as a 15:54 5ker. He enjoyed running and continued running well past graduation. He had hit some of his goals, ran 73 minutes in a half marathon and as of 2019 was a 2:34 marathoner. As time went on things began to click. Workouts were getting faster and the encouragement from his wife never waned. In 2022, he made a big jump to 2:23 and the goal of the trials that seemed so distant didn't look to far away. At the McKirdy Micro Marathon, Jara ran 2:17:19 to qualify for the Olympic Trials at the age of 36. He credits his longevity to enjoying his runs and being adaptable in training. His perspective of how he balances life, family and running will provide inspiration to all that are balancing all three. D3 Trials Files: Holly Clarke
2024/01/03
Happy New Year! We kick off 2024 with Holly Clarke - a Johns Hopkins grad. Holly is gearing up for her 2nd Olympic Trials next month and is excited to bringing more experience and miles to the line with her. To get to the 2020 trials, Holly took off 30 minutes from her time going from 3:12 to 2:42. During that time she realized she was under fueling and worked to properly fuel her body for a big breakthrough. The key for Holly has been having a community around her. After graduation, she took time off of running but when she moved to San Fransisco she joined the Impala Racing Team. Being around teammates and others training at a high level has inspired her to keep the dream alive after graduation. At Johns Hopkins, she came in not on the varsity lineup and worked her way into the top 5 her junior and senior year. She was a part of two national champion teams but has mixed views of her time in college. She developed an eating disorder - which she talks about in the episode. This episode has a theme of growth and progression. Steadily improving year after year and continuing to learn about what works for you. Check out Holly's coaching Instagram and her website. Noah Droddy's CIM and D3 Glory Days 2023 Year in Review
2023/12/22
Our last episode of 2023. Noah and Stu sit down to discuss Noah's OTQ at CIM. With surgery earlier in the year, Noah completed the couch to OTQ training plan. He dives into how he handled the build up mentally, how he focused on enjoying running, and what comes next for him. We also review the year D3 Glory Days had. We experience great growth, had wonderful conversations, and preview what's to come in 2024. Thanks for sticking with us. We're glad you're here. The D3 Trials Files: Dan Vassallo
2023/12/12
“My mentality that day was, I wanted to improve my tombstone.” The Olympic Marathon Trials is February 3rd and we plan to tell tales of D3 grads that hit will be in Orlando. Today, we bring you the story of Dan Vassallo. Dan qualified for his third Olympic Trials at the McKirdy Micro Marathon in October. Vassallo’s longevity in the sport is something to be studied. He graduated from Colby in 2007 and immediately jumped into the Marathon. He didn’t run his first OTQ until 2014 when he won the Philly Marathon in 2:17:28 In 2023, his OTQ time was 2:17:39 The biggest day of his running career came on Marathon Monday in 2018. With the wind howling and the rain crashing down, Vassallo finished 10th overall at the Boston Marathon. Being from the Boston area, this was everything he wanted. He’ll go deeper into the race but something he will always remember. This is a great D3 journeyman story of continuing to keep the dream alive and realizing it’s worth to still get after it. 2023 D3 XC Champs Files: Fiona Smith
2023/12/07
“I was absolutely not expecting any of them to come. And so, I think just over the mile mark, I heard they're distinct cheering and saw them on the side and I don't really smile during races, but they got me to smile.” It’s been a wild 2.5 weeks for Fiona Smith. On November 18th, she won the D3 XC Nationals. Two weeks later, she broke the D3 Indoor 5k record running 15:50. Two days after setting the new record, Smith announced she will be attending NC State as a Grad Transfer next season. She takes us through what the D1 recruiting process was like and why she ended up choosing NC State. She said coach Laurie Henes said, “So that was one of her big points about making sure that I continue to love the sport, and continue to develop me and give me all the opportunities I need to run fast and compete well, especially when it comes to indoor and outdoor track.” After winning the national title, she had her sights set on the record. She did a great job of not focusing on it as a record but another opportunity to compete. This was the first time she was in a pack in a while so that kept her engaged and competing throughout. She’s a student of the sport and is amazed that she has overtaken the top spot in D3 especially with those who came before her. We finish the conversation talking about the national meet. While she was the clear favorite, she explains why she still got nervous and lacked a bit of confidence the night before the meet. However, she let us know tactics she uses to keep her nerves at ease. D3 XC Champs Files: Ethan Gregg
2023/12/05
“I’m just so grateful for those guys. They're the whole reason I'm here, they're the reason I'm pushing, they're the reason I race like that. And damn, I just love them. I love them to death and I'm so proud of them.” The redemption arc the whole division was watching. In May, Ethan Gregg was DQ’d for a false start in the 5k final. In November, he won the D3 XC Individual National Title. Gregg takes us through the aftermath of the DQ and the guilt he felt as he believe it affected UWL’s chances at a team title. He spent the summer in Boulder living with guys from Cornell College and it helped him recover from the painful day. He used that DQ as positive motivation to not let it affect his training. He knew his job was to get fit to help his team in November. While he was happy to win the individual title, it was hard to fully enjoy it as UWL lost by just one point for the team title. As always, Ethan brings great perspective on how much the team means to him and the motivation he derives from them. D3 XC Championship: Carleton Team Champs - Phoebe Wad, Sophie McManus and Mary Blanchard
2023/11/28
“You can anticipate something like that all season. Like in theory, we knew we could do it. But actually seeing that [the scoreboard with Carleton #1] and knowing that we did it was just a completely different thing.” Phoebe Ward, Sophie McManus, and Mary Blanchard join D3 Glory Days to relive their national championship! With all but Clara Mayfield returning from last year’s team, Carleton knew they had something special. They relied on their pack running and knew every runner mattered as they got closer to Nationals. The turning point in the season was when they won the Mike Woods Invite, taking down SUNY Geneseo, Johns Hopkins and Lynchburg. Before the race, they were hoping to finish third. What propelled Carleton forward this year was how close they were a team. On the line they kept things loose and reminded each other of what makes them stand out.
