Se7en (1995) | Ep. 86 - Part 2
2026/09/25
What's in the box? John, Westy and Matt finally get there, picking up the second half of David Fincher's Se7en where the first left off. Part 2 turns to the crew behind that rain-soaked look, the studio war over the ending (and the star who flatly refused to shoot it any other way), the reviews, the money nobody at New Line expected, and a closing scene that still knocks people sideways. Plus the hosts' final verdict and scores. Not heard the opening of the case? Part 1 is where the sins start stacking up, and it's well worth going back for. Telling the story of Hollywood, one film at a time. Se7en (1995) | Ep. 86 - Part 1
2026/09/25
A killer working through the seven deadly sins, and a city where the rain never lets up. John, Westy and Matt open the case on David Fincher's grimy 1995 landmark, starting with the unlikely tale of how it reached the screen at all, including the admin blunder that accidentally handed cinema one of its darkest endings. Part 1 runs from the film's origins through Fincher clawing back after Alien 3 and a cast led by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, before the case turns properly grim. We stop just short of the desert. Part 2 is out now: the crew, the finale, the reception and the legacy. Telling the story of Hollywood, one film at a time. The Bourne Identity (2002) | Ep. 85 - Part 2
2026/09/11
A score paid for with money that had already been spent, a farmhouse the studio flatly refused, and a director looking into whether he could sell his credit on eBay. Luke, Westy and Matt pick the story back up. Part 2 turns to Tony Gilroy throwing out the novel from page ten onwards, John Powell's cold metallic score and Oliver Wood draining the colour out of Europe, before the finale, the reception, the sequels and four scores. Part 1 is where the trawler, the bank and the ride to Paris all kick off. Start there. Telling the story of Hollywood, one film at a time. The Bourne Identity (2002) | Ep. 85 - Part 1
2026/09/10
Pulled from the sea with no name, no memory and four languages nobody can explain. Luke, Westy and Matt begin the story of the film that dragged the spy genre out of the gadget shop. Part 1 covers Doug Liman flying himself to Montana to the doorstep of Robert Ludlum, Matt Damon boxing for six months purely to change the way he walks, real US Marines clearing the Zurich consulate, and Franka Potente fixing a very nervous love scene with a bottle of Jägermeister. Part 2 has the crew, the finale, the reception and the legacy. Out now. Some Like It Hot (1959) | Ep. 84 - Part 2
2026/08/28
Dozens of takes for a single line, a leading lady who terrified her director, and cinema's best closing gag. John, Luke, and Matt pick the story back up. Part 2 turns to the crew, the score and Jack Lemmon's maracas trick, before the reception, the awards, the sequels and legacy, plus the hosts' final verdict and scores. And yes, we finally get to that ending. Part 1 is where the massacre, the disguises and the dash out of Chicago all kick off. Well worth doubling back for. Some Like It Hot (1959) | Ep. 84 - Part 1
2026/08/28
Often crowned the funniest film Hollywood ever made, and it nearly killed everyone who made it. John, Luke, and Matt begin the story of Billy Wilder's cross-dressing, mob-dodging masterpiece. Part 1 takes in the St Valentine's Day Massacre opening, Wilder's choice to shoot in black and white, and a cast led by Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe, right through to Sugar, the bourbon and that yacht. The maracas, the millionaire and one very famous last line are still to come. Part 2 has the crew, finale, reception and legacy. Out now. Predator 2 (1990) and Alien 3 (1992) | Double Feature - Ep. 55
2026/08/24
Every monster movie that makes a fortune eventually gets a sequel, and every sequel inherits an impossible brief: do it again, but different, and don't upset anyone. These two took a swing at it and split the room. Predator 2 (1990) hauls the dreadlocked trophy hunter off to a near-future Los Angeles cooking in a heatwave and a drug war, with Danny Glover stepping in for the conspicuously absent Arnold Schwarzenegger. Stephen Hopkins trades rainforest for rooftops, and if you squint at the creature's trophy wall you'll spot the skull that kicked off decades of fan theorising. Alien 3 (1992) announces the arrival of David Fincher, making his feature debut and seemingly wishing he hadn't. Ripley washes up on Fiorina 161, a grim prison foundry with no weapons and a congregation of lifers, and the film commits to a bleakness the franchise never quite shook (the fate of certain Aliens survivors in the first reel remains a sore point to this day). John, Westy and Matt work through both, sizing up where each sequel lands, the scenes that stuck, and a Patron question apiece, before the knottier one: can a monster sequel ever really escape the shadow of the film that came first? Tim Bruculere is this month's Patron of the Month, but the credit (or blame) for the pairing sits with Westy, whose choice carried the poll. As ever, only one film takes the ATRM Classic spot, so someone's walking away empty-handed.
The Exorcist (1973) | Ep. 83 - Part 2
2026/08/14
Two composers were thrown off the film before Friedkin found thirty seconds of Tubular Bells by accident. Luke, Matt, and Westy continue the story, heading up the stairs to that bedroom. In Part 2 we cover the crew, Blatty's screenplay and the real 1949 case behind it, Owen Roizman's flatly-lit refusal to hide anything from you, and Dick Smith, who get inventive when testing his mechanical. All of that before the exorcism, the reception and the legacy. Plus the hosts' verdicts and scores. Part 1 is where the unease takes hold: Iraq, Friedkin, the cast. Worth starting there if you haven't listened already. The Exorcist (1973) | Ep. 83 - Part 1
2026/08/14
The set burned to the ground overnight. Regan's bedroom came out of it without a mark. Luke, Matt, and Westy begin the story of the film that dragged horror out of the drive-in and all the way to the Academy Awards. In Part 1 we cover the prologue shot in 130-degree heat in northern Iraq, the casting of Burstyn, Blair and Jason Miller, and William Friedkin's methods for getting a performance, which ran from firing guns on set to hiding rotting meat around it. Standard directing. Merrin hasn't arrived and nobody has been down those steps yet. Part 2 goes upstairs: the crew, the exorcism, the ending, the legacy. Out now. The Best of ATRM: Jan-Mar 2026
2026/07/31
Another trip back to the editing desk, this time raiding January to March 2026 of the ATRM Classic archive. We've pulled out the strongest takes, the sharpest analysis, and the detours that turned out to be going somewhere all along. Consider it a sifting service: three months of deep dives condensed into the moments that landed hardest, with some moments a of pure hilarity. New listener trying to work out what this is? Old hand fancying a nostalgia run? Step right in. Telling the story of Hollywood, one film at a time.
