Ian Trebinski, COO, V.Ships
2025/12/17
On this episode of One Step Beyond, we are joined by Ian Trebinski, COO, V.Ships.
In this episode, Ian Trebinski, COO of V-Ships, offers a compelling look at leadership through the lens of one of the world’s most complex and overlooked industries. He reflects on the early moments that shaped his leadership philosophy, from being a 19-year-old officer cadet learning humility at sea to navigating the transition from operational roles to high-stakes strategic leadership. Ian reminds us that growth begins with acknowledging what we don’t know and being willing to learn through discomfort.
Throughout the conversation, Ian highlights the human side of global shipping, emphasizing the incredible responsibility leaders carry when their decisions impact people working in difficult, high-risk environments. He shares lessons on managing culturally diverse teams, making ethical choices under pressure, and staying grounded while overseeing operations that move 90% of the world’s trade. His examples illustrate that leadership is not just about expertise, it’s about compassion, clarity, and the courage to do what’s right when it matters most.
Looking to the future, Ian explores how automation, sustainability, and new technologies will reshape expectations in the maritime sector and beyond. He stresses that human judgment, ethical leadership, and personal resilience remain irreplaceable. The episode closes with personal insights, from reconnecting with nature to embracing curiosity, underscoring that leaders who cultivate balance, perspective, and continuous self-reflection are best equipped to guide their teams through uncertainty and change.
ON THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT
Humility accelerates leadership growth. The willingness to admit gaps and learn quickly is often what separates effective leaders from experienced managers.
Ethical leadership is non-negotiable, especially when decisions impact people’s safety, well-being, or long-term career trajectory.
Technology and automation will transform industries, but human judgment, emotional intelligence, and ethical decision-making will remain essential.
About Ian Trebinski:
Ian brings over 25 years of global maritime industry experience from across multiple sectors. He has worked at sea, as a navigating officer, and since coming ashore has held senior HSSEQ roles within Oil & Gas, Ports, and Subsea, and has held senior consultant roles in organisations that shape both national and international maritime legislation and policy.
Ian holds an MSc in Safety and Risk Management from Heriot-Watt University, and he currently represents V.Group on several industry bodies that are actively working for the continual improvement of safety culture, and safe working practices, to the benefit of the international maritime community.

On this episode, Aram sits down with In this episode, Dara Waitkus, founder of The Piped Peony Academy. Dara shares how she turned her love for buttercream flower piping into a
thriving global community for bakers and artists. A self-taught expert, Dara began as a cottage baker and quickly became overwhelmed by orders, until she discovered her true passion: teaching. Through her signature Blooming Buttercream, Dara has empowered thousands of bakers to create realistic, detailed floral designs. Her Academy, launched in 2022, now offers a comprehensive learning platform filled with unlimited classes, exclusive recipes, and an engaged support
community.
Aram and Dara delve into her story, one of connection, resilience, and purpose. She emphasizes that meaningful learning happens through human connection, not isolation, and believes that community is the key to mastering any craft. By fostering an environment where “I” becomes “we,” she’s built a space where bakers help one another grow, blending
storytelling, empathy, and shared experience into every lesson. Her approach integrates systematic, step-by-step teaching with encouragement and a growth mindset, reminding students that failure is a natural part of mastery.

Her journey reminds us that expertise isn’t defined by formal education, it’s built through passion, persistence, and community.
THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT
Mastery comes from curiosity and adaptability, not just formal education. The best leaders learn every angle of
their craft and make it their own.
Expertise is both technical and human. Understanding people, context, and communication is what elevates skill to
mastery.

As a mom, wife, foodie, and artist, Dara turned her passion for flower piping into something more. After watching endless unhelpful YouTube videos, she knew The Piped Peony Academy had the potential to help cottage bakers of all skill levels refine their techniques petal-by-petal. Part II - Pete Chramiec, Founder of Bicycle Homebuilding & Punk Icon
2025/09/17
On this episode of One Step Beyond, we are joined by Pete Chramiec, Founder of Bicycle Homebuilding and New England Punk Icon.
In this episode, Pete Chramiec shares his unique journey from the punk rock scene to becoming an energy-efficient home builder focused on sustainability, affordability, and community impact. Aram and Pete discuss how his roots in the DIY punk movement, particularly through his band Verbal Assault and time at the Discord house, laid the foundation for his values-driven approach to construction. Drawing from his experiences growing up in Newport, Rhode Island, Pete discusses how music, mentorship, and the punk ethos shaped his commitment to environmental action and social responsibility in both life and business.
The conversation dives deep into the Passive House movement, a rigorous standard for building energy-efficient homes, and how Pete integrates these principles into his work. He talks about the uphill battle of scaling sustainable housing solutions in a challenging Northwest housing market, emphasizing the need for partnerships, skilled labor, and fair pricing. Pete also reflects on the tension between DIY culture and valuing one’s financial worth, encouraging builders and creatives alike to charge appropriately for their work while staying grounded in integrity and purpose.
Throughout the episode, Pete highlights the broader implications of personal and professional choices, arguing that environmentally conscious construction isn’t just a technical decision but a moral one. From designing "little golden girls huts" to championing affordable housing, Pete’s story is a testament to how passion, resilience, and mentorship can drive innovation in unexpected spaces. His blend of punk rock ideology and construction expertise offers a refreshing perspective on what it means to build with both heart and intention.
ON THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT
The DIY punk ethos translates to the business world by encouraging self-sufficiency, a hands-on approach, and empowering individuals to build solutions without waiting for permission or ideal conditions.
Career fulfillment often requires courage to pivot and pursue a passion that aligns with your unique skills and instincts.
Resourcefulness fuels opportunity.
Mentorship is leverage: the right relationships at the right time can change the trajectory of your career or business.
A great advisor can help you model outcomes you might never consider and give you the clarity to act decisively.
About Pete Chramiec:
Pete Chramiec was born in Newport, Rhode Island, a long time ago. He spent his childhood sneaking small sailboats into the Atlantic Ocean without telling his parents. As a teenager, he joined a band and went on some tours, which led to him being in Berlin in 1989 on the very day the Berlin Wall came down, a fact that he doesn't let anyone forget. 1989 ended up becoming his best year, as he was voted guitar player of the year in the unread Flipside Magazine (a xeroxed copy of which he posts next to our report cards on the fridge every year). He later lived in Washington DC, but it was too muggy (weather-wise and also getting-mugged-wise), so he moved to the better Washington: Washington State. There, he studied Organic Farming, but couldn't grow things good. He luckily met his wife and, more importantly, had two very cool daughters (one of which he forced into making this website for him). Now, he lives in Olympia with his family, along with his two cats, one dog, and eight chickens. As you can tell,...

Part II - Drew Wilkinson
2025/06/25
On this episode of One Step Beyond, we are joined by Drew Wilkinson, climate activist, consultant, and Founder, Climate Leadership Collective.
In this episode, Aram and Drew discuss how sustainability can be more deeply woven into corporate culture. Drawing from his experience at Microsoft, Drew emphasizes that climate change is not a problem individuals can solve alone through lifestyle changes, it demands systemic, collective action. He reflects on how employee engagement can drive meaningful corporate responsibility and how advocacy within companies can shift conversations and policies around climate impact.
Drew shares his transition from a corporate role to starting his own sustainability consulting business, highlighting how intuition, relationship-building, and purpose guided that shift. He explores how consulting allows him to support companies that are serious about aligning growth with environmental values, and why ambitious goals require both internal pressure from employees and leadership buy-in. Throughout the episode, Drew and Aram also touch on the psychological and emotional aspects of this work, including how meaning, spirituality, and personal belief play into one’s ability to pursue change.
The conversation ultimately calls for courage, especially from young professionals, who are often leading sustainability conversations from within. They explore how risk-taking, authenticity, and personal conviction are essential to shifting the corporate status quo. Whether it’s confronting “green hushing” or reimagining what leadership looks like, the episode is a reminder that large-scale climate solutions begin with people willing to show up, speak up, and make sustainability part of everyone’s job.
